Can't fire a coach because we have no money. Can't let a coach be a lame duck for a year because it hurts recruiting....how does UND ever fire a coach?

I certainly wouldn't give Jones an extension this year.

Coaches get extensions when they have 1 year remaining. Just how the business works.

So if BF found money and put it towards the basketball program (like he did with football), would that make it better? Or is he waiting until after this season to magically find money and buyout Jones and pay more for a replacement, again like he did with football. Also wouldn't the basketball program have more money if they got a brand endorsement from Adidas?

Shoe money from adidas or Nike makes little difference. Discounted gear. That's about it. As jdub mentioned. Regarding BF finding more money. Jones will be extended and it will be for more money.  A given. So, he will need to find more dough.

14 ft step back jump shot ok shot but still tough....Geno created that shot  of his dribble drive ...not a straight up open mid range jumper... I would have played Seales instead Adam late and put in Josh on last set to cover Senglin.

Right. But at the same time, Senglin's shot was a 22 foot step back. I'd take crandall's opportunity over Senglin's.

Personally, I would have fouled and given em two shots at the line. But that is a whole other debate. Sucks no matter what.

Your comment regarding an "awful for the first 5 years of DI" followed the above post.  Were you not referring to Johnston?

I was not.  Sorry for the confusion.

Since Nagy made the NCAA tournament in his 4th year out of the transition, as it appears, and it's obvious that the comments in this thread were made to promote Jones vs. Nagy and their histories, UND should be putting on their dancing shoes Saturday night.

That would be great. To the chagrin of many on this board. Queue the outrage over that blasphemous assumption.

Yes, your math is awful, 2008-09 was their first year when transition was done. His transition record 2004-05 through 2007-08 is 33-83. Like someone says who gets fired after transitioning from DII to DI especially when you are an Independent, there was no GWC for basketball during their transition.

Just cleaning some things up on the topic. Someone mentioned 21-7 in 2004-05. Nagy barely survived those transition years. I remember it well.

ESPN stated 21 years during the game.

Aaron Johnston has also been coaching the SDSU women for 16-17 years.  They are also going dancing this year.

Amazing he survived. They were awful the first 5 years in Division 1.

Why not? He could be in the NBA, or a D-league team. He's got the skills to get there.

At one time i would have said no. Too small and probably not become a good shooter. Today I say yes because he has become a good shooter. If Harvey can be a second round pick, so can Q. He has so many more intangibles than Harvey and I think he will become an even better shooter than he is today. Size will always be an issue with pro scouts but is somewhat offset with his physical strength. He is a great pick and roll guard who makes good decisions. He has shown great trajectory in his development and has a heart of a lion. He will play for a living in my opinion.

  9. I think most players would tell you they would rather wear nike shoes. Adidas was late to the game with the ultra light high top (Nike hyperdunks) and dropped the ball again as players went back to low top shoes. When it comes to basketball, Nike has far superior shoes.

  10. Idaho is best rebounding team in league. Style of play offensively and defensively much to do with this (Stu Morrell protege). Offensive rebounds were pretty close I believe. We took 10 more shots and missed 10 more shots. Needed to board better but sometimes you need to look a bit further when evaluating rebounding stats.

Before Idaho state game I thought we needed to go 2-2 in this tough 4 game run. We did that. The Idaho game is a bummer. Eastern is best team in league right now. Weber win wasn't expected. Idaho State win looks better and better.

Highly doubt Jones instituted the new defense or the weave on offense.  What they were doing wasn't working, and someone proposed instituting these new systems.  My bet is Heatherly is resposible, as he's the new blood in the coaches.

I see what you did with the critical thinking there but this isn't the case. We ran max/flex offense at times last year at times but you never saw it because it wasn't run very well. Need unselfish players to run it effectively. It's a popular offense as well. The one thing Jones is, is a smart, technical coach. He is good at tinkering with sets and constantly does this. Just got players now to do it.

With rules changes, matchup issues, etc. Playing some zone pretty common in college basketball right now.

I hate to keep ripping on him, but the flow of the offense is ten times better when Shanks is on the bench.  things grind to a halt when he's clogging up the middle.   he can be a valuable situational guy off the bench, but to expect major minutes from him just doesn't seem wise at this point.

Pick and roll game exposes his weakness. Not a great pick and roll big. I doubt he would have come here if he knew he'd be setting so many ball screens.

with that said, up by 4 at half with him playing heavy minutes. Decent lead when they took him out. Didn't play the rest of the half. Lost by 1.

This team is much improved from last year.  Still along ways to go.  FT's will need to improve or we will lose many close games.  One comment from the EWU game, Shanks pulls down a nice defensive rebound and then throws up a 3 pointer.  Like what are you thinking.  I noticed Hoker had some words the next time play stopped.  This team does have talent just needs to play as a team and improve FT's   I don't know if the team practices FT's when they are tired but they definitely need too.

Q dropped that pass off to C to let that three fly. Good play. Rimmed it out.

Good move pulling shanks late as EW would have put him on the line.  Jones wants an inside out game but shanks not ready to score when doubled. The only time he should shoot vs the double is when clock is running out .

It was a good move. Not for FT reasons though as they both shoot 60% from the line.

  15. I would think you would want the guy who leads your team in FG% to try and score the ball when he gets it. He has also shown himself to be a willing passer as evidenced in the Idaho game and others as well. Sure, probably should've kicked it out a few times but you can nitpick everyone. Geno should pull it back sometimes. Drick shouldn't shoot outside of 12 feet. Q fades too much at times. Carson should kick it out at times. I don't think their is anyone to blame. Just basketball.

This is not another "Fire Jones" type comment.  I am simply curious if anyone with better BB knowledge than I can explain our strategy at the end of the first half.

We called TO after an EWU turnover with 49 seconds left in the half.  It was obvious that our strategy was to hold on to the ball as long as we could (as if we had enough time for us to take the last shot of the half).  With 4 seconds left on the shot clock, Hooker was forced to try to create a shot and was called for a foul.  Fortunately, EWU did not score before the end of the half.

Why would we have stalled (and ended up making a bad play due to the shot clock expiring)?  Wouldn't the normal strategy been to simply go ahead and work for a good shot (my preference) or try to get up a quick shot (either made or missed) so there was 35 or 40 seconds left on the clock.  EWU would have not be able to play for the last shot.  We would have gotten the ball back for the last shot.  In the NBA world, it is simply making sure you have two possessions to your opponent's one.

    What am I missing?

I disagree. You are nitpicking something in a nice win to get people riled up. Why not talk about the nice adjustment putting Seales at the 4 against the zone instead.
