  1. Let's say we finish 3rd in the Big Sky this year. You're gonna whack a guy that has finished 3rd, 2nd, 10th, 5th, and 3rd in conference play the last 5 years?  I doubt it. Hell, that's a better run then Matt Painter has had in the Big 10 the last 5 years. Sides have been picked though. No one is changing their mind on this board.

I do agree with Hoops44 in that some folks on this board just love the drama. Want team to get whacked so they can bitch about Jones. You can deny it all you want but I know the type. Seen it for years on Gopherhole.

In the Moorhead Northern St game last night Wathall's team lost, but some interesting numbers.

Tanner Kretchmen - 41 points Fargo Davies grad

Aaron Lien - 36 points Moorhead grad

Mack Arvidson - 30 points Grand Forks Red River grad

All 3 somewhat recruited by UND I believe, all three can shoot the 3 ball. All averaging over 17 a game and will be all NSIC players. I could name 6-7 guys over the last 4-5 years for UND these guys should've had scholarships over. Take a look at some of the conference leader stats for the NSIC and you'll see their names at the top of places UND could use help with.

Not trying to pile on because I hope the team does well and wins the big sky and just know those 3 were looked at by UND and passed on and they are 3 of the better players in the nsic right now. Thought of that when Wathalls name was brought up.

NDSU offer any of these kids?

I'm not sure you could find anyone that has a bad word about Q. Easily one of the most humble, appreciative and down to earth student athletes I've come across at UND. Regardless of who he is interacting with, kids or adults, he shows a genuine interest. He was an absolute steal on and off the court for Jones and company.

Good dude for sure!  Easy to cheer for.

Grand Forks Herald listed Bryce Cashman was arrested for DUI on consecutive days in Sept., 2016.  I believe that is what got him kicked off the BB team.  Don't know if he wil be allowed to come back.  Use 16/17 as his Redshirt year and would still have 2 years left.

He had 2 DUI's this spring/summer. Within 2 months of each other. Are you stating he got 2 more in Sep?

Senior ...did nothing as a PWO at liberty...UND a little thin perhaps at the guard spot could use a live body who is in early 20s

Closer to an undersized 4 than combo guard  Came to UND for medical school

Okay Mr. Solutions, explain why a school that is very similar to UND in many aspects, is a part of the NDUS, and which is facing the same budgetary issues UND is much more successful than UND at getting Division I teams to come to town. That is what I meant by "explaining away". The whole Fargo Megalopolis argument doesn't hold water with me; it's one freaking hour away via Interstate. Grand Forks isn't Barrow, Alaska. At least you didn't use the "Grand Forks is too cold during the winter" argument that some people have used on here.

Partnering with NDSU is a good idea, but with their current leadership and their attitude towards UND, I don't think that will happen. But considering that their President is likely on his way out the door, that could change soon.

Finally, our poor attendance won't get better until the team performs more consistently over the course of a season. People are taking a wait and see attitude toward the team (like with football). I do hope Jones can have a big year and get this program to the next level.

For the gazillionth time on this board. We have to play money games to fund the program. Which means, we cannot pay Ball State 65k to come play us at the Betty.  We have to use that game to go somewhere to play a game and we get the 65k. Play a school from Power 5 and now you are talking 100k plus. One for one games DO NOT get you any money. It's a simple formula. I don't know what NDSU does. Maybe they have more money than us. Who cares.

Drick and Hooker are grinding this off season....Shanks is the one who needs to bust his hump like these two

With all due respect, posting a 30 sec video on social media with music dub isn't an indicator of how hard you are working in offseason.

probably a walk on as a rs soph also... will have to earn a scholly on the court.  Jake not going to turn getting a  low D1 kid for free.  Nothing wrong with turning down a free ride and serious PT to pay your own way and spend more time on the pine in order to be closer to family

When eligible, he will play good minutes. Good young player.

Another stupid comment that has nothing to do with what was being discussed.

It's the go to move. That and (throat clear) we recruit players who jump to high.

NDSU is picked to finish finish 2nd in the  Summit preseason polls. They finish 5th. They come back and finish 2nd in the conference tournament, so Richman is a great coach. UND is picked to finish 8th to 10th in Big Sky preseason polls. They finish 5th. They lose in the semifinals of the conference tournament to the conference champs. Jones is the worst coach on the planet. That's the logic for today.

Well, Richman does always wear a tie during games and doesn't get animated during games on sideline.

I'll help you out. Bottom-line: I believe that Brian Jones does not have the ability to teach the level of fundamentals necessary for UND men's basketball to be a top Big Sky Conference team. May he can rely on talent and that will help with a season here and there, but consistently, UND won't be a top BSC team. After 2016-2017, when Hooker is done, UND will likely be right back in the hole if Jones stays aboard.

Not exactly the bottom line you were indicating.

How many draft picks did Bo Ryan have over his 15 seasons (364–130) at Wisconsin?

    http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/2015/story/_/id/12594145/wisconsin-badgers-coach-bo-ryan-ability-develop-players-transcends-all-teams

Quite a few seem to disagree with you; that is, if you're implying Bo Ryan's Wisconsin program wasn't disciplined and focused on fundamentals. He also worked with very few high-end draft picks, although some certainly were present.

Read the article I posted above; that level of discipline and old-school fundamentals is non-existent with Brian Jones. UND needs someone who can mold young men, not someone who needs "pre-developed talent" in order to win. And before you claim UND can't just hire a "Bo Ryan", look at what NDSU did in hiring someone familiar with those tactics. I would want my kid playing for someone who preaches discipline, hard work, and constant improvement, not someone who only looks for the easy way out by recruiting the prima donnas who think they've already arrived. If that's what Brian Jones really needs, then UND will not win big with Jones at the helm. Don't get me wrong, UND basketball has some great kids in the program. For example, who isn't impressed with the character of Quinton Hooker? An absolutely great kid, and that's what makes him great for UND. UND needs more kids like Quinton Hooker - talented but even more so with his character/mental make-up. You win with kids like that, not the kids who can jump out of the gym but don't know how to show up for class or play as a team.

I'll let this one stand on its own.

Talent is only part of the issue (nevertheless, Jones is the one who recruited that 'talent'). Some of the best college basketball teams in recent years, such as Bo Ryan's Wisconsin teams, were not filled with talent but rather played together as a team and played fundamental defense. Saul Phillips - who came from that same Bo Ryan coaching tree - implemented fundamental, disciplined basketball at NDSU and look at the results they had (big wins [Wisconsin, Notre Dame], 2x NCAA tournament appearances, win vs. Oklahoma in NCAA tournament, etc.).

UND needs someone who is more fundamentally-sound in terms of coaching. That is not Jones. Jones does not scream discipline; in fact, he could use some discipline himself with his embarrassing sideline antics. At UND's level of football and basketball, coaches need to be able to DEVELOP TALENT, because UND is not going to get top talent. Those midwest players go to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State, etc. Instead, you need kids who have moderate to above average talent with GREAT WORK-ETHIC and then you mold those kids into winners which can eventually overcome those aforementioned BIG 10 recruits. Jones doesn't appear to be able to do that. He hasn't showed it yet, because everyone who has supported Jones defends him with the deficient talent argument; however, that is counter-intuitive when it comes to low-major DI basketball here at UND.

The budget situation is certainly unfortunate, and for that reason, Jones will get to coach for UND during the 2016-2017 campaign; however, I do not think he should be given a blind extension. Let him earn that extension next season with all that 'talent' he will have. In fact, I'm more interested in how this team DEVELOPS or doesn't develop over the off-season; the status quo should not be acceptable. Many players this season were freshmen playing their first season of college basketball - those players SHOULD improve if provided the proper teaching.

Bo Ryan's "no talent" team had 2 first round draft picks last year.

I'm pretty sure Troy Huff could shut a latex salesman like yourself down when he wanted to.

He showed flashes of playing great defense, followed by long stretches of sandbagging.  just like most of the team did those years.

They had to be talented, as they finished around .500 every year while refusing to play as a team and refusing to box out.   That is my long lasting memory of that group; "box the f___ out!!!!"

    Solid effort.

This is what can happen when you don't make a change when it's needed.  i.e. 2 years ago.

Jones took the most naturally talented group in school history and allowed them to be the most undisciplined, disappointing team in school history.

but now he's two years in to somewhat of a fresh start with players that came to UND  with the mindset of playing hard in all aspects of the game, and playing as a team.  (They didn't learn that here).

UND basketball is fun to watch again.

Jones will continue to fail at end of game decisions, but with mediocrity as the standard, Faison will most likely extend his contract.

    #hailJones

Why does everyone assume that team was so talented?   Other than Huff, who couldn't guard me, who was so talented?  What other d1 offers were on the table for this group?

  16. 41 minutes ago, UND1983 said:

Why do you feel its a given he will be extended?

The reasons have been detailed ad nauseom (sp?). Some refuse to listen. You don't whack a coach that has finished in the top 5 of the conference for 3 out of 4 years. Not to mention the positive trajectory program seems to be on.
