  1. oh boy, maybe I'll stay out of that. I guess not a lot of other people thought Bartels played well Saturday besides me. Thought he threw the ball very well and delivered on time. One criticism of our passing game I'll have is that with either qb, when they were scrambling, there wasn't a ton of movement downfield. Hard for any qb not to just run around like a chicken with his or her (female chickens are equally capable) head cut off when there's no where to pass it.
  2. I dont get your hate on Bartels at all. You apparently saw something I didn't. Bartels stayed alive on a few plays were no one was open. He's obviously not as fast as Studsrud, but I don't think he was a liability at all on the ground. He also throws a really nice ball. That ball to smith was a heck of a toss that should have been had. He threw had shoulda been the go ahead bomb... I really jsut don't see his play as a negative yesterday.
  3. Gotta turn your head around on passes. Too many penalties. Too many turnovers.
  4. Time for tailgating boys and girls, let's go! I was gonna post a picture of my new tailgating van, but I can't get it to work
  5. He told him no more and there wasn't any more goals? He should do that before the game tomorrow. 101 stuff
  6. As a big TR fan, I have no problem waxing philosophic from time to time haha... That probably has a lot to to do with the 'brevity' of my posts as well. I haven't looked like it up lately (laziness), but I am pretty sure in the minutes describing the creation of the state flag, the 1st Volunteer's battle flag is specifically mentioned. You are correct though that it and its similar likeness was often used.
  7. Offensively, it's obvious that holding onto the ball would be a heck of a step in the right direction. Second, penalties. I think the refs were a little loose with the whistle during some drives, but it'd be great to cut them down/out. I'd like to see timing routes worked out. Curls, slants, outs, hitch type stuff. Seems like we are bit off on those. I don't know if its communication or lack of familiarity there, but if we could get those for 4, 5 yard gains, I'd feel a lot better on third and mediums. Lastly and personally, I wouldn't hate more Olivera 6 yards after contact runs. Defensively, just hold it together the injuries. Can my key to the game be Reyes not being hurt? Rich was a favorite of mine, so I'm worried there, yet hopeful Mr. Baker will step in. Hopefully Idowu is ready to go, full speed. If they do a bunch of quick, timing routes, would I be wrong to say that our OLB need a big deal? An Anthony Barr at the end of the first half type pick would be nice. That's what I'm looking for this weekend.
  8. I attach Teddy to Rough Riders because it's part of the name's appeal to me. I understand some are leaning towards the more ambiguous someone who breaks horses definition.I prefer the military history. I believe Roosevelt to have a more deep and meaningful connection to the state than some, notably Siouxphan27. I believe this to be philosophical, as we are discussing things that happened back in 1883 (Teddy's first time, a buffalo hunt,in North Dakota, which happens to coincide with the University's inception). I don't think Roosevelt would have possessed the skills necessary to be a successful commander in Cuba without his time in North Dakota, in fact, I would be highly critical of suggestion otherwise. North Dakota transformed him from a "young dude" to the barrel chested bastion of manliness many associate him with today. I don't think without the skills acquired in the badlands he would have or could have swayed McKinley to allow him to raise the regiment. In addition to Roosevelt, there are others in the unit who spent time in North Dakota, notably Jesse Langdon. North Dakota was 9 years old as a state in 1898. Of course there wasn't going to be a ton of native North Dakotans in the unit. There weren't many to begin at all (the vast majority we can't use as a nickname). Some of the Roughriders Roosevelt had met ranching or hunting Dakota, while they never had a residence there. Siouxphan is correct in mentioning it was largely Southwesterners, as was McKinley's mandate was something like 2/3rds or 3/4th's of the volunteers were to be from the Southwestern territories. To wax philosophic for a second here, as well, though I wish there was more representation from North Dakota for nickname purposes, I think there can be positive parallels drawn from the diversity of the group. Look at our recruiting maps (hockey's is somewhat of an exception lately). Look at how many different areas are colored in. The Roughriders had cow punchers and sheriffs from the untamed West; it had aristocratic born Ivy league-rs and athletes; it had Native Americans. It did a lot its fighting with the 10th Cavalry, an African American unit (Buffalo soldiers). It was diverse group coming to together to fight underneath one flag (largely the same as the state of North Dakota's) to push American to the forefront of the global community. It is a hell of an example for our teams to follow, in my opinion. The Roughriders weren't around long, no, and Theodore Roosevelt wasn't around very long in North Dakota either. That time spent, however short, had deep, meaningful impacts. A lot of the friends, and student athletes I met at UND, weren't in the state for any longer than their 4/5 years required, but the vast majority of them became better men and women for their time here. The imprint left on them, doesn't fade away, as it didn't for a 28 year old (ish) Roosevelt when he moved back to his original home. Many of the great things he did, are a direct result of abilities learned or honed in North Dakota. That might not be a bad aim for a university there in and of itself.
  9. Make Sack City Great Again
  10. Actually death came for him in his sleep because it knew they'd be a fight if he was awake.
  11. it's a football game, so i think it should be a football... maybe call it #chuckthepigskin
  12. are you a student?
  13. This is the probably the most creative and most probably effective idea I've heard in threads about football attendence.... Should we do it between the 3rd & 4th quarters to ensure students stay?
  14. you from Williston?
  15. Olivera's run when he moved the pile a good 6 yards after mass convention, was kind of the reason I was so pissed about the flea flicker call. Seemed like we could have pounded them over and over with fresh legs like that. I could have a revisionist's history on the tempo at that point, however.
  16. Yeah I think you manage to watch, slap, and yell simultaneously. I have high standards though, just not for myself. My seats are directly behind the railing, so slapping that is ineffectual and painful.
  17. I think they have been better this year
  18. I agree it doesn't have to be, I'm guessing the connotation comes though because people who support the name Roughriders are making that connection themselves (largely, not entirely, obviously)
  19. I'm pro Roughriders and it is a significant plus for me.
  20. I foUND their groUNDs for sUNDogs UNDerwhelming. I'm dumbfoUNDed they think it is that profoUND. I'm UNDersold, but maybe UNDergrads are astoUNDed or spellboUND. I just think clever lettering isn't a great foUNDation for a name. It works for an UNDerground bar, but I think for UND it'd be a blUNDer. Go dachshUNDs!!!
  21. I was just doing Mike Tice quotes. I would consider it a most heinous offense to misrepresent Mike Tice's words. #factsonly
  22. I'm from Rugby, and his dad coached me in basketball, so I think he should be starting. #factsonly I have no idea where how's he's doing in practice, but mechanics, i.e., footwork, will be the focus of his work I'd imagine. He was kind of allowed to just be better than a lot of people in high school, and didn't need to be technical to outperform some teams. He's a pretty hardworking, sports-obsessed kid, so I would think his future could be promising.
  23. "we're gonna make the playoffs next year, I'll tell ya that right now"
  24. Pretty pumped we are 4 and 1. One thing I hope gets better going forward is the timing/chemistry on those curl routes. It'd be nice to have that in our back pocket when we need 4, 5 yards.
