  17. Wasn't a bad half I thought, both teams played very well on the defensive end of the ball. Someone else needs to get going on offense along with Buck so we can have a legitament chance of winning. Take care of the ball a little bit better (quit traveling please) will also help
  18. First full slate of conference games of the season is tonight as all but SUU are in action. Sac St @ NAU EWU @ Montana PSU @ Montana State Game of the Night will be UNC @ Weber State
  19. I don't think that Jones has recrutited the wrong type of kids. In my time here at UND, I have seen a lot of the basketball players around campus and they are pretty level headed guys that are good in the class room (UND APR in Men's basketball was 968, which was above the national average by 20 points). The kid recruited for next year, Hooker, has a very good head on his shoulders so we don't need to worry about him. Very disappointed in Traylor, I mean come on, there is zero excuse for any student athlete to not be able to pass your classes. With everything that is available to you (tutors, asking the professor/TA/GTA for help, study sessions, help sessions, etc) and for you to not take advantage just reeks laziness.
  20. I wonder if this means Jones will have little if any choice to lift Ryan's red-shirt because we need depth in a big way. Unless Jones is planning on getting Huff minutes at the 4, with Brekke still being out this is our 4's and 5's left without lifting the redshirt. Archer Allard Wilmer Stockdale
  21. A key 3 pointer by Jamal Webb and a double-double off the bench from Troy Huff was just enough to get a much needed victory over Bowling Green (56-53). Now UND (3-8,0-2) will begin their 1st real Big Sky road swing as they head on out to Idaho State to take on the Bengals. Tip off is at 8:05 PM at Holt Arena MEDIA The Game will be on Big Sky Tv and will also be heard on the UND radio network HISTORY This will be the 3rd ever meeting between the two schools. The all time record is split at 1 apiece. These two teams played those 2 games last year, as they split the series. Each team protecting their home court. FUN FACTS With 88 more points, Troy Huff will become the 32nd player in UND history to get to 1000 career points. Jamal Webb is currently leading the Big Sky conference in steals with 2.4 SPG This game will feature 2 players currently in the top ten in free throw percentage. Tomas Sanchez is 2nd in the conference and Aaron Anderson is 7th. ABOUT THE IDAHO STATE BENGALS (1-10, 0-2) The Bengals are lead under coach Bill Evans (1st Year). The Bengals were picked 9th in the conference by both the coaches and the media. So far the Bengals have been a real work in progress under Coach Evans. The make up of the team is several JUCO/transfer players and a few HS players. Despite a 7-9 year in the sky, they went 9-21 overall on the season. The first two conference games were on the road against PSU and EWU and came up empty in both (63-49, 57-54). When looking at this team, they do not like to play offense... at ALL. Their 49 PPG is at or near the bottom of all D-1 teams, with their rebounding not that much better. Looking at the roster, they aren't the biggest bunch of players in the world (except they do have a 7-4 player, but he doesn't play as much). So I guess with an undersize and undertalented squad, you need to win any way you can. So they want to slow the game down and take away the possessions. They have done this successfully against several teams (holding CS-Fullerton, the third best scoring team in the nation, to 66 points, which is their lowest output of the season). However, they have not shot the ball well enough to get rewarded with many victories. STAT COMPARISON UND ISU PPG 64.3 49.0 RPG 34.5 26.6 APG 11.2 9.9 FG% .400 .384 3P% .323 .271 FT% .718 .650 KEY PLAYERS #3 5-11 G Melvin Morgan SR (12.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.7 APG, .366 FG%, .179 3P%, .718 FT%) Senior leadership is very important for any squad, even if it comes from a 2 year JUCO player. This kid fits the bill. After a decent Junior year for the Bengals, he has gotten off to another decent start. However, he has struggled from behind the arch this year (coming down from nearly shooting 40% his junior year). He has proven that he can be a good floor general, however he can be wild with the ball at times. Does get to the line and he is a halfway decent free throw shooter (an 0-4 performance last time out against Washington State kinda puts a damper on your percentage), especially when you only have taken 39 attempts. Definitely the biggest guy you need to keep in check for this team. #20 6-4 G-F Chris Hansen SO (9.2 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 1.0 APG, .344 FG%, .361 3P%, .813 FT%) Another first year transfer that has been getting some success for ISU. This kid is their 3 point shooter, as most of his shots have been from behind the arch his year and has had a decent showing with his 36.1% shooting percentage. The other thing is that he really hasn't done much other than shoot from behind the arch. While he does make his shots from the line, he as only taken 16 attempts so far and in 5 out of 11 games he has attempted 1 free throw. He does had the ability to grab a few rebounds from time to time and sneak in the occasional 2, 3 assist game, but he knows his role. #1 6-3 G Tomas Sanchez JR (8.5 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.4 APG, . 431 FG%, .400 3P% .875 FT% Another key player that has been brought over from the JUCO ranks that has been able to make a sizeable impact for the Bengals. This is a kid that can do a little bit of everything for the Bengals. While he isn't the first option for scoring on the team, he has the capability of putting up 15+ in a game as they has done twice already this year (17 against CS-Fullerton). He also is a sneaky guy on the boards and does a very nice job in the steals department. Another thing about this kid is he is a very good free throw shooter. To start his season, he had a streak of 23 straight makes at the free throw line, before missing on against Oregon on December 5th. A kid you need to make sure you keep in check and not let this kid go off. KEYS TO THE GAME 1) Road Woes: If UND still wants to contend for a conference crown, or to make the conference tournament all together, then they need to STOP this BS on the road and play a good game and WIN. Hopefully the BGSU game gives them the confidence and swagger they need to play well on this road trip. 2) Pace: UND cannot play ugly ball with the Bengals. They need to pick the pace up any chance they get and they need to nail shots. If they can get up on them, it might cause them to get out of their pace a little bit 3) Shooting: Looking back at the SUU game, going 18/60 from the field is not acceptable, especially when you go 28-35 from the line. Our shooters need to be ready to go. Huff has done a good job so far since he has been back from his Jaw injury. Anderson needs to stop his stupid cramping and finish a game for a change. Most importantly, Schuler and Antwi need to make shots. 4) Rebounding: We need to kill they guys on the boards, without question. My expectations might be too high, but I am expecting someone on UND to get once again 10+ rebounds. BOPCO. Huff and Webb need to continue to rebound at a high rate and Wilmer needs to get back to getting 8-10 boards a game here. 5) Free Throws: We have done well this year in making them for the most part, keep it up and get to line as much as possible. This is always very key to winning on the road.
  22. A little late, but better late than never UND (2-8, 0-2) looks to bounce back after a disappointing loss to UNC as they step out of conference to take on Bowling Green tonight at the Betty. Tip off is at 7:05 PM MEDIA The Game will be on Big Sky TV and will be on the UND radio network HISTORY First ever meeting ABOUT THE BOWLING GREEN FALCONS (5-6,0-0) The Falcons are coached by Louis Orr. The Falcons were picked 5th out of 6 team MAC West divison. The team has a very potent 1-2 punch in Crawford and Calhoun, in which they combine for 32.7 PPG, which is 2nd highest in their conference for scoring duos. While they almost pulled off an upset of both South Florida and Michigan State, they also have a stinging loss to IUPUI thrown in there this year. This is still a good team and this would be a major victory for UND if they can get it, not only to get some momentum into 2013 and the rest of the conference season, but to start getting some positive vibes back into the program. STATS COMPARISON UND BGSU PPG 65.1 63.4 FG% .403 .396 3P% .333 .300 FT% .716 .720 RPG 33.8 35.6 APG 11.2 11.6 KEY PLAYERS #1 5-6 G Jordon Crawford SR (16.7 PPG, 3.9APG, .399 FG%, .364 3P%) Big things do indeed come in small packages. This quick point guard is part of a potent 1-2 punch for the Falcons. This kid is a very dynamic scorer and like has been said, can shoot from anywhere. In their 11 games, 10 of them have been double digit scoring, and out of those game 4 of them were 20+ points. Crawford isnt a 1 dimenional player however, he is a solid assist man and a sneaky rebounder from time to time. Like a lot of his teammates, he is a decent shooter at the free throw line. He does a lot of things that are needed for this team, especially at his short stature. We will have our hands full with this guard, might have to take a chance of drawing a charge or two on this guy. #15 6-7 F A'uston Calhoun SR (16.0 PPG, 6.9 RPG, .438 FG%, .784 FT%) The other part of this 1-2 punch. This kid has proven in several games this season that he can score. He has had a 30 point game in a loss to Cleveland State. He uses his size well and can really rebound the ball well. He his also an effective free throw shooter and can get on some nice streaks where he can make 10, 12, 14 in a row in a game. He can not only do his job in the post, he also can flash a little outside shot as well. A guy that needs to be taken seriously from his post work to his mid range and 3 point shot. Wilmer, Archer and Allard are going to have to play very well on this guy. KEYS TO THE GAME: 1) Troy Huff: He made a big impact in the game last week against UNC in getting 14 points in 20 minutes. Now with another week to get more into game shape and get more full contact practice, I expect his role to expand (perhaps start again). If he can regain the form of how he finish the last 4 games of last season, look out. If he can also give UND another rebounder that they desperately need and can play some lockdown D against this quick point guard, it will help the cause significantly for UND to pull the victory 2) Team Rebounding: Its without question that since the SDSU game, our rebounding has ranged from okay to down right pathetic. No matter who is on the court they need to bring basic rebounding fundamentals of Boxing Out, Pursuiting the basketball, Clearing out the basketball and finding the Outlet. I understand that we will be more than likely not have Brekke and Traylor to help our rebounding efforts, but with Huff hopefully playing more minutes we can help allieveate the problem a little bit. Wilmer is going to need to be huge in this aspect 3) Defense on Calhoun and Crawford: very cruicial to our success. We need to be very strong on the defensive end to try and limit the production of these two players. We are going to have to use our length to try and discourage Crawford and try to take a charge any chance we can get. We will have to put bodies on Calhoun and make sure to play him straight up as possible so we can avoid foul trouble ourselves. Wilmer and Archer are going to have to step up a couple of knotches to keep this kid in check. 4) Free Throw battle: We need to win this battle, in most games this year we have shown that we can shoot from the line quite well. We need to do what it takes to keep the Falcons off the line and get our guys to the line as much as possible. Just remember thought, we cannot have another UMKC shooting performance either. 5) Schuler and Antwi: We need to get these guys shooting well once again. If we can get these 1 or both of these guys hot from behind the arch we will be in good hands.
  23. My key player in this game is going to be the guy we just got back, Huff. Hopefully with another week to heal and practice he will be able to be inserted in the starting up and be able to play more. Wouldn't be shocked if a junk defense (such as a box and 1 or triangle and 2) gets used at some point tomorrow night Hope to have my preview up later tonight.
