  1. Weigh that against the game-day distraction.

I'd rather get ahead of it and have it be secondary on game-day.

Actually more of a distraction for the fans (especially the ones on this board) than for the players. Not having to answer a million questions about whether they like they new jerseys or not is probably a good thing before the first game. Maybe they will have to deal with it at the press conference afterwards, but they will be insulated from all the questions while the players are on the ice during warmups and the game. Put me in the "The Right Thing to Do" column. On the other hand, I am curious.

  2. After all of the accusations from Frank Burgraff, Fetch, Dave K. and friends I would like to pose a question. Is this really about the downtrodden Native Americans and their rights? Are we really going to stand up to the NCAA? Those of us who have been called cowards or sheep because we see the bigger picture and the importance of putting UND and UND athletics in a better postion to succeed have decided no matter how we feel about the name, the risk is too real. Will those of you who claim this is more important than UND athletics, demand UND wear the logo jerseys for the upcoming NCAA playoffs and then accept the NCAA penalty of forfeiting the game? If UND would wear the logo jerseys it would do more than anything thus far, to bring this to a national level and expose the NCAA hypocrisy. Can you imagine the media madness if a University made such a stand against the biased policies of the NCAA and was willing to risk a National Championship in order to make our point and stand up for the rights of the Sioux nation? If you would do that , then I may disagree, but I respect your opinion no matter how misguided and you have the courage of your convictions. I would like Frank Burgraff to publically demand UND wear the jerseys if he really believes in this cause. Otherwise he is just a mouthy 4th line aggitator and loses his credibility. Are you folks dedicated to this issue or not? If so, you should be calling for UND to wear the logo jerseys as a matter of principle. If not, then you are not committed to the cause and just making noise. To be willing to let the punishments hurt others and not you or your favorite team, would be cowardice in my book . Otherwise, it is clearly time to drop the name and move on and I am not sure I know of a better example to try and get some of you to see what is at stake. On a personal note Fetch, if you are going to the regionals and still want that beer, I buy you that beer and a few more as long as you don't drive me nuts. I'll be at Embassy Suites

Wow! What a concept! Don't think I would have the cojones to make a statement like that, but what a bold move it would be. If there would be any way to call national attention to the hypocrisy of the NCAA, this would be it. To have the Sioux skate out on to the ice in their traditional logo jerseys and then have the NCAA call off the game before the puck even drops. Intriguing idea, Ira, but crazy consequences. By the way, yes, I realize you are being at least a little sarcastic, but just crazy enough to be thought-provoking.

  3. I would like to witness Fetch, Dave and the rest of them looking these hard working ladies in the eye and telling them that this is all worth it to be able to be called the Fighting Sioux (sometimes).

To not have your picture in the NCAA Championship program - something they will probably keep for the rest of their lives - - is this really the lesser of two evils, DaveK?

  4. (SIGH)...

I would rather have a UND Fighting Sioux football team under sanctions than no UND Fighting Sioux football team at all. It's a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils.

You really cannnot believe that being under NCAA sanctions is a lesser evil than not calling the University of North Dakota athletic teams the Fighting Sioux?!?!

    Seriously!?

  5. This just in: An aspiring SAB reporter and student "journalist" from NDAC weighs in. At least, he's about as consistent with this facts as SAB. Must read!

    http://www.ndsuspectrum.com/opinion/not-caring-about-anyone-1.2808127

I must have read a different opinion column than the rest of you did. Considering that this was written by an NDSU student, I thought it sounded pretty sympathetic to the position that the NCAA has put UND in. Even if he did not have 100% of the facts correct (really now, who outside of the frequent commentators on this board have delved so deeply into this issue), the tone of the article was not the usual type of opinion that comes out of the Fargo campus. Lighten up, y'all.

  6. the other problem, brought up earlier by Sica, ira or someone else much smarter than I am... if the nickname stays, the next tribal council or the next or the next, can rescind their tribe's endorsement of the nickname, just like Standing Rock has already done. All it would take is one or two voices to persuade the council to take another vote. After all, the ND State Legislature did it twice in less than a year. Perceptions can change at any time. The controversy, as long as the nickname is the Fighting Sioux, will never go away. I am an old, white man, so I can't speak for Sioux tribal members now or in the future.

It may be different if UND is called the Flames (or Cougars ;) with a nod to that Utah high school). Again, how about WASPS? Won't like it as well, not in any way, shape or form, but it is what it is.

  7. Sorry if this has been posted, but here is The Hockey News take: http://www.thehockey...e-ramps-up.html

a couple of very interesting paragraphs...

But the fun and games ends now because North Dakota needs the NCAA more than the other way around. A Frozen Four without UND would be a shame, given that recent alumni include Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise and T.J. Oshie. But Michigan, Boston College and Minnesota bring just as much profile to the table.

On the other hand, what high-profile recruit is going to come to a school that literally has no shot at a national title? Here’s a perfect case study for you: Right now, top 2013 draft prospect Seth Jones is deciding where he’ll play next season. The U.S. national team development program defenseman can head to the Western League’s Everett Silvertips, or a college program. One school high on his list is North Dakota. Jones would be the biggest UND recruit since Toews – in fact, one NHL exec told me it was unfair for the 2011 draft-eligible blueliners on the NTDP when Jones was on the ice, because all the scouts were watching the Texas native. That was last year, when he was supposed to be with the under-17 team, not the under-18s.

even the hockey fans that want the logo on the front of the jersey have got to see what it could do to the program...

  8. ..

The simple fact remains that according to the agreement with the NCAA, UND needs the official approval of the 2 closest tribes and it only has that from 1. Therefore the sanctions remain in place.

    ...

if this part of your statement is correct, dagies, then we have been barking up the wrong tree. Standing Rock is not the second closest tribe: Sisseton-Wahpeton is 135 miles away from Grand Forks, Standing Rock is well over 200, even on a direct course. Why isn't the save the nickname movement working with the Sisseton tribe since Standing Rock's Tribal Council refuses to help?

  9. How about taking a stance against the corrput NCAA, the corrupt SBoHE, and the corrupt people who are currently in power at UND? Those three groups are currently using the UND athletic dept. as a pawn in their PC crusade against the Sioux nickname, disguising it as trying to protect Native Americans when in fact what they are actually doing is disrespecting Native Americans. It is so far beyond sickening and disguting. I'm so angry about this issue I can't even find words strong enough to describe my feelings.

Sorry, Dave. It's not about disrespecting the Native Americans any more. As much as it may have begun that way, it has now become a struggle to avoid sanctions and punishment levied on UND by the NCAA.

And for the Fetch crowd that thinks a Grand Forks Fighting Sioux AHL team is the answer, please take it and a use it with respect so that UND can get off the NCAA sanctions list. (If memory serves, though, the NCAA settlement agreement requires UND to retain control of and prevent the re-use of the Fighting Sioux name)

We pretty much all agree that the NCAA is abusing their position and power in this situation, but that abuse does not mean that they cannot continue on the path they have already charted.

  10. Anyone else find it ironic that the StarTribune article written by Rachel Blount was posted today, along with the UMD article regarding the racist/hostile chants. Weird, right? :whistling: I mean, let' see UND played Duluth two weeks ago and that article couldn't have come out any earlier?

Who's controlling the media people? Who's buying into it?

Putting too much thought into it? Probably, but I live to question things.

everyone (well, not quite everyone) was clamoring for national media stories on the arbitrary NCAA policy. well, it is in the national press now, Blount's piece was picked up all across the country. it is not good press for UND or the Fighting Sioux nickname.

we better watch out what we ask for, because we just might get it. hate to see it go, but it is time for UND to move on...

  11. Well, at least he's trying to get Nebraska talking about it. Hopefully he's trying to influence other AD's behind the scenes to add programs as well.

As for the 4 powerhouses...I count Michigan, Wisconsin (Devastated by early departures currently) and Michigan State who is traditionally an average squad. How can he even think of considering Ohio State a powerhouse?

yeah, i get it - he must mean Penn State ;)

  12. I don't always agree with Rachel Blount, and she's never been a real fan of the Sioux moniker, but she seems to box the issue up pretty well.

    http://www.startribu.../139773373.html

the statement she makes that really gave me pause:

...put the nickname issue on the ballot for the November election as a constitutional amendment.

That is not a joke. ...

this whole fight among ourselves is really being looked at as a joke by the rest of the country. I don't like reading statements like that, even from Twin Cities writers.

Benny... there are so few teams with native american nicknames, it will be difficult to come up with a list of schools who have announced that they will no longer play teams with native american nicknames, I just don't know how you can list the schools that won't play Alcorn State because of their nickname. Really, what other measure is there besides the list of schools (MN, WI, IA) that have officially announced they won't play UND?

  13. I guess they could add another team, but I thought adding USD was due in part to stuff like this, like an insurance policy. If Illinois State leaves, it puts the conference back at 9 members, an ideal number.

That may be, but USD was added to the MVFC, and the MVC may be looking for an all-sports member to keep the status quo in the MVFC with the Summit schools. North Dakota would bring no Summit League ties into the MVC that a NDSU, SDSU, USD or another previous member of the Summit would.

Bottom line is that UND will still have to get off the NCAA sanction list to get in to any conference - BSC, WAC, MWCUSA, MVC, Summit - you name it.

  14. After seeing reports listing the UND Sioux in South Dakota and hearing other parts of the country thinking it was the Sioux playing football when NDSU was playing, what would be the chances that recruits from other parts of the country could confuse NDSU and UND? Seems to me that recruiting could harm South Dakota as well as NDSU and UND as long as the sanctions are in place. Anyone else see this as a possibility?

Wouldn't you think that recruits are a lot more on top of what school is the Fighting Sioux than some headline writer in Connecticut?
