  1. The definition is cool and definitely unique but it just doesn't roll of the tip of your tongue. How about the Blaze or Blazers?

I know it is not a popular choice, but Blazers, as in Trailblazers, gives a nod to the Lewis & Clark history of the state. There are several better nicknames, but I am willing to wager that Trailblazers is better that whatever PC color* or weather phenomena the Kelly committee comes up with.

    * like Stanford Cardinal and Harvard Crimson, cough cough, North Dakota Kelly (as in kelly green): gag!

  2. No matter what you think about his skills on the football field, America would be a better place if more of the ultra-rich athletes were like Tebow.

    Rick Reilly article on espn.go.com

    http://espn.go.com/e...eving-tim-tebow

Every week, Tebow picks out someone who is suffering, or who is dying, or who is injured. He flies these people and their families to the Broncos game, rents them a car, puts them up in a nice hotel, buys them dinner (usually at a Dave & Buster's), gets them and their families pregame passes, visits with them just before kickoff (!), gets them 30-yard-line tickets down low, visits with them after the game (sometimes for an hour), has them walk him to his car, and sends them off with a basket of gifts.

Home or road, win or lose, hero or goat.

    ...

There's not an ounce of artifice or phoniness or Hollywood in this kid Tebow, and I've looked everywhere for it.

    ...

    Isn't that a huge distraction?

    espn_tebow_zak_300.jpg

Not everything Tim Tebow does on one knee is controversial. Ask Zac Taylor.

"Just the opposite," Tebow says. "It's by far the best thing I do to get myself ready. Here you are, about to play a game that the world says is the most important thing in the world. Win and they praise you. Lose and they crush you. And here I have a chance to talk to the coolest, most courageous people. It puts it all into perspective. The game doesn't really matter. I mean, I'll give 100 percent of my heart to win it, but in the end, the thing I most want to do is not win championships or make a lot of money, it's to invest in people's lives, to make a difference."

  3. It boils down to which NDSU team show up. If both teams bring their best, it is still a double digit NDSU win. If NDSU doesn't show up, UND has a shot. It means a lot more to UND than NDSU. If you were to tell Brian Jones UND could win one more game this season he would pick this one. If you told Saul Philips NDSU could win one more game this WEEK, he would say SDSU on Saturday.

already preparing the excuse that it didn't matter to NDSU? UND is tough at home, on the road, not so much. looking for the team formerly known as the Sioux to pull this one out. this game should mean plenty to both teams.

  4. Just a general question for UND fans....If these petitions to make it and the state law is back. If UND is somehow booted from the Big Sky and basically has their athletic departement go up in flames....how many of you would become NDSU Bison fans? I hate to say it but for me living in Fargo with no other DI school around (as UND wouldn't have a football, bball, or VB team) it would be tough not to become a Bison fan.

The WAC may still be desperate enough to take a team that is on the H&A list. Do they still have only 7 FB teams? Bowls are not under the NCAA, so the Fighting Sioux could get bowl invites. ;)

  5. These are the teams that do NOT have 11 games on their slate. So any of them would be available.

then by all means, Mr Faison should be talking to someone... and if he can't figure out how to get them on the schedule, just make a friendly call to Gene Taylor. He seems to have the process figured out. Get some wins, build some confidence. Seems like a darn effective practice.

  6. Here are the list of teams that UND could play the first week of the season if we were to buyout the SD Mines game:

    James Madison

    Bethune-Cookman

    Morgan State

    Savannah State

Sacred Heart (no not the one in E.G.F.)

    St. Francis

    Wagner

    SE Missouri St

    Bucknell

    Fordham

    Butler

    Campbell

    Marist

Morehead St (not that Moorhead State)

    San Diego

    Valpo

    Samford

    Wofford

    NW St

    Sam Houston St

    Alcorn St

    Ark-Pine Bluff

    Grambling St

    Miss Valley State

how many of them already have 11 games scheduled?

  7. give up the SD Mines games. if its money UND needs, take on some BCS schools that will pay UND to travel there. Some of them might even be games UND could win. Maybe not with the 2010 team, but who knows about the 2012, 2013 teams and on? Minnesota, Iowa State, Washington State and Kansas are all really big name schools that UND could maybe be competitive with... not sayin' just sayin'. And if UND can't be competitive with these teams, at least there would be a good payday. The 2011 team learned from the Fresno game, they turned the season around afterwards.

  8. I am the mother of Lance Orender. I started watching this train wreck yesterday. I want to thank the coaches for having considered him. He is a good kid and a good football player. I am sorry it did not work out. I prayed throughout this that there would be grace for a 20 year old boy who DOES need to grow up and has never been far from home. He would have done well for UND and I know that the experience would have been character building for him. Again, I am sorry it worked out as it did and again thank the coaches for considering him.

thank you for the post. i feel bad for Lance that it didn't didn't work out. UND is a great school.

  9. Is Red Pepper East affiliated with the regular Red Peppers?

iirc, If you take the way way back machine to the mid 70s, the Red Pepper East was Bruce Tellman's first satellite restaurant, inside the old Spud Bar. Food was no good then either.

  10. It's an out-of-this-world sandwich that The Red Pepper has built their entire name on. It's definitely worth having.

on a long sub-type bun, but wa-a-ay better than any subway, quizno, domino, etc sub.

really, though, its the garbage plate - before I ever heard of taco salad

  11. I've heard more pimping of this place than any other location in North Dakota. I have made two trips there. Once, drunk. It was solid. I left feeling content with what I just ate. Once, sober. Average would be an overgenerous word to describe the food.

it's not the food. it's the ambiance of the original place on University. it's historic when you go there. tens, probably hundreds, of thousands of UND athletes, students and Sioux fans have stood at that same counter, walked on those same, creaky floors and eaten there.

  12. My point was that there are winning teams with classic uniforms, winning teams with modern uniforms, losing teams with classic uniforms, and losing teams with modern uniforms. While I concede the point that some college age kids might dig uniform styles that I find to be extremely tacky (because I know many kids that age listen to music that I find repulsive, but I digress...), I really don't think it's as simple as saying modern uniform = winning program and classic uniform = losing program. There is so much more to it than that. How many recruits are actually going to choose one school over another merely because the uniform is more modern than classic? ???

agreed on the winning/losing point... but to a recruit, looking cool may sway the decision.

  13. I'm sorry to inform you of this fact, but there are numerous winning programs out there with old-school type uniforms (Oklahoma, Michigan, USC, Notre Dame, Texas, Florida State, Nebraska, and I could go on all day). To try to make the argument that you must have a gaudy/tacky modern style uniform to attract top tier athletes is not only a stretch but a pulled hamstring.

yes, there are lots of 'old school' uniforms, but... you are talking about some pretty storied programs. North Dakota is a newcomer, relatively speaking, in D-I to the Oklahoma's, Michigan's, Notre Dame's and the others you mentioned. Oregon's uniforms are edgy and differentiate their program. It is, or at least can be, a selling point when players are deciding between USC and Oregon, or say NDSU and UND. And yeah, I'm an old guy, but I like the Oregon Rose Bowl uni's. The Chrome helmets were not tacky and the feathers were pretty subdued. Now, on the other hand, from what I have seen and heard concerning Coach Mussman, those uniforms don't quite seem to fit his 'public' style, so it may be a moot point anyway.

  14. Wow... I don't think that hate is even a strong enough word to describe how I feel about those uniforms. Gaudy and tacky would be a gross understatement. YUCK!!!

Sorry, Dave, disagree with you on that one. They should not make uniforms to please 40, 50, etc year old guys watching the game on tv while they're drinking their beer. Oregon's uniforms look sleek and fast, and guess what, their team is sleek and fast. The recruits they get are sleek and fast. I see a connection.

  15. Isn't this type of performance and post game response getting to be a regular event. Mizzou most recently comes to mind, but there are others. These kids better soon realize this is D1 not DIII. The scholarships are to perform and win, not just compete and be nice scholars.

Unfortunately, you are correct, Ole. in D-I, It's not about being student athletes anymore. Now its about being winning athletes, the student part has been lost. That, to me, is the downside of the move to D-I. Welcome to the world of Ohio State, Miami and Southern Cal.

  16. If we don't represent our conference by placing Big Sky logos on the 25s, I'll be very upset. Schools much more likely to realign before us display them (e.g. Montana, Montana State). With all the glamour talk about the Big Sky, I find it slightly hypocritical to say we shouldn't display Big Sky logos because we may realign soon after. Here is what I hope UND decides on:

    2gvo9qd.jpg

They would go well with black home uniforms!

Very Nice FB-FAN! Love it! Agree about the Big Sky logo too.

How about Silver pants and helmet to go with the black jerseys? gotta say the Oakland Raiders uniforms are nice, even though I'm a Packer backer
