  1. The Alerus Center used to have an amazing atmosphere and can have it again. Read the arcticle below. I believe this was Mussman's first game as head coach. I love the part were the opposing head coach says the crowd yelled "Home of the Sioux" during the National Anthem and it felt like thunder went off in the building. If I remember they stayed in the locker room for the nation anthem for whatever reason.

    from this article -

What a great endorsement of the old-style smash mouth football the Fighting Sioux played:

"Also, it was a team that has all their individuals committed to doing it right, no matter how big or small their role is," said Atterberry, whose Javs travel to East Central (Okla.) for Saturday's Lone Star Conference crossover game. "They have some guys that just played special teams or whatever, and they beat everyone. It was like they were the most privileged person in the world just to be running down on a kickoff."

  2. I always found that argument of going D1 caused us to drop the nickname interesting. As you already know division 2 is still NCAA...we may have been able to get away with it a bit longer but it would have been gone either way; people who think that was the reason are not comprehending the facts.

More than likely would not have made a difference. Since hockey was already D-I and had the Bennet Brien logo on the front of the jersey, the Fighting Sioux would have been in the NCAA's crosshairs whether the rest of the teams were D-I or D-II (or even D-III)

  3. So why can't they say we are going to have replays at buildings that support it. Like UND vs Montana was on Root Sports (a major channel) easily could have had replays. If they can have replays at the REA they can sure have it at the Alerus.

You can't have replays at one game and not at all games for that level of play. It has to be equal. It wouldn't be fair to teams playing in places without replay capability.

I think it comes down to not enough camera angles if the games are not televised, and even some of the televised games don't have enough cameras to get a good look on a replay.

  4. Everyone needs to calm down. Yes we had high hopes going into this season. But everyone that looked at our schedule said that it was probably the toughest in the Big Sky. Did anyone really think that we were going to walk into this conference and go 7-1, 6-2 in the conference? You can be optimistic, but I will be realistic.

The team has played bad defensively....we all know that. But as bad as we have looked tackling and covering receivers We have had a chance to win all our games except for the E. Wash. game. 3 of our loses (SDSU, Cal Poly, N. Ariz.) we have been within a score in the 4th quarter. And those were all good teams!! Top 20 FCS teams. So looking at the loses we have, if we would have been able to close out in the 4th quarter of those game, it would be a totally different outlook on this season.

Unfortunately, football is a 60 minute game, not 30 or 45.

  5. Tale of the tape

Defense? If you can call it that....

    UND Griz

    33.4 ppg 27.6 ppg

    228 rypg 105 rypg

    214 pypg 256 pypg

    14 sacks 25 sacks

    Offense

    UND Griz

    37 ppg 30.4 ppg

    173 rypg 239 rypg

    266 pypg 196 pypg

    11 TO 18 TO

    42% 3rd 38% 3rd

So it's their power run game vs our patty cake run defense and our passing attack vs their sieve like passing defense.....

so what you're sayin' is it will be another Big Sky track meet.

  6. If we are going to play the who do I want game if Muss is fired? I would want Duluth's head coach. I know he is the AD there as well, but he is a very good football coach and he turned UMD from a doormat in the NSIC to the top of the mountain.

    +1

  7. I know Sierra Vista well. Two high school/college friends worked down there as contractors for the military. I've had a few rounds @ The Sorry Gulch Saloon and lived to tell. Miller Peak is one of my favorite hikes. Chiricahua National Monument, Tombstone, Bisbee, cooler temperatures and cleaner air...SE Arizona is my second favorite part of the state.

Flagstaff: Poverty With a View. I'd give an internal organ to live there again but it's just too hard to make ends meet.

yeah go to the Chirachuas and you swear Wile E Coyote must be there - I did see the RoadRunner. Congratulations on surviving the Sorry Gulch. Love the San Franciscos and Sedona.

Congrats to the Jacks on having the best team you've had in many years. Sorry, but I hope UND can parlay the home field into enough of an advantage. The Sioux need to get back on track.

  8. <drum roll>

Did your daughter go to ASU or U of A? I hear that all the time from Sundevil or Wildcat fans. A gentle reminder as to when the last time they made it to the Rose Bowl (never for U of A) or a major bowl game (ASU...1997) calms their bluster. NAU is certainly not in the Ivy League but neither are any of the Big Sky Conference schools or any Pac-12 schools/campuses I've been on apart from Cal or Stanford.

No, my daughter goes to The U of North Dakota, but grew up in southeastern Arizona - Sierra Vista. A lot of Buena grads go to NAU, and she would always give her brother a bad time about NAU. Have nothing against NAU & think Flagstaff is a beautiful town. Just wish I could afford to live there.

  9. Lets bump this thread so the Montana State rivalry thread can get back on track.

Darrell, The "problem" with NDSU's OOC scheduling, if there is one, is that it is working. Call them cupcakes if you want, the AC plays weak BCS schools and win, they play weaker FCS schools and win, so they pad their resume, and more importantly boost the players' egos (if they need any more help after winning a D-I national championship). Bohl does a good job of not letting his team look beyond weaker opponents and lose games they should win. Then they go and win more conference games. Faison and Mussman should be paying attention.

I would say that hate them if you want, but Taylor and Bohl have a system that works. If you were in their shoes, would you be willing to roll the dice and possibly lose to a regional rival (maybe not a conference rival anymore but definitely a recruiting rival) and risk losing? I still say the only way this rivalry will resume (at least as long as Taylor is at NDSU) is in the playoffs. And then, unfortunately, since the Fargodome is bigger than the Alerus, it will be in Fargo every time until UND is the top ranked FCS team and NDSU has to travel in a late round semifinal.

  10. Why would UND bring back a coach who ran away from the transition period and has had no success at the D-I level?

With the schedule UND has this year, the expectation that UND would make the playoffs was unrealistic. It has been a tough reality check, but if the Sioux can't beat Northern Colorado, then it is definitely "Houston, we have a problem" and Lennon has not proven he would be the one who could fix it by what he has done at Southern Illinois.
