Maybe Missouri Sate is not an apples to apples comparison, since Petrino has turned them around with so many transfers.
On the other hand, Montana State was an almost-there team in the Big Sky and Vigen has made the difference that put them on top of the BSC -in his first year. It feels like UND is where Montana State was: on the cusp, looking for the right fit to get them to the next level.

1. a top 10 FCS team or an FBS.
UND should be one of these top 10 FCS teams.
On another tangent… Opening the transfer portal, imho, is the Power 5 putting pressure on the NCAA to stop the break-away by those schools. They have enough power in the NCAA to force this onto the smaller schools, G5, FCS, DII and even DIII. This is making the small schools a farm system, like minor league baseball is to the Major Leagues.

Murray and Kansas City are within the MVC footprint, but Arlington is quite a bit outside. Would they go after Oral Roberts then too, to link the geography?

Our red zone offense is ranked 11th in MVFC. Our red zone defense is 12th.
Wow! That’s really bad in an 11 team conference.

Say you are the grand old place of higher ed-juh-muh-kay-shun, "Whazamattah U," ... and the WAC calls ... and you know NMSU, SHSU, and McNeese State have all bailed on the WAC, you jumping in with both feet?
Not to mention Denver, UMKC. Who’d-a-thunk the Summit would be more stable than the WAC?

I suspect the MAC invite was both or neither.
C-USA stable at 9 then?
WAC loses 2 - NMSU & Sam Houston. Will they go after more Texas schools now?

Middle Tennessee is staying in C-USA.
Western Kentucky - you’re up

Couldn’t raise funds at Eastern Washington. Same thing at UND

That 4th and 2 changed the momentum for the game…
and the rest of the season.

Left out in the cold. Not southern enough
Happy for New Mexico State to finally get an FBS home.
Sam Houston never really even slowed down going through the WAC.So now, both Sam Houston and James Madison are leaving FCS. Do the northern schools have aspirations, or are they all willing to maintain the status quo?

Yes, Bubba will still be the HC next year. We get it. And the Hawks will probably continue the roller coaster ride and qualify for the postseason again next year. Seems to be a theme. Maybe win a game or even two in the playoffs.
Will that mean another extension for him or will he retire or move on to the Alumni Association?

Fresno didn't hire an up and comer from NAIA. They hired a guy from the Big Ten who was hired THREE times after Sioux Falls
No, but UND passed on him earlier in his career

Serious question…
would you rather hire a former DII coach with a 22-21 record as a head coach who is looking to retire after finishing his career here?
-or -
a young up and coming coach who has a 67 - 3 record with 4 (four!) national championships at a lower level like NAIA, who will get attention from both recruits and higher level programs that will likely be hired away after several successful seasons?
well, Fresno State is leading the MWC West and is probably pretty happy with that up-and-coming young coach. (And I am not suggesting hiring Fresno’s defensive coordinator)

Edit:
Apologies for the double post. Meant to post this in the Future of the Program thread.

So, if all this transpires, C-USA will have Florida International, Louisiana Tech and Texas El Paso. Then if they can add U Conn (for football),New Mexico State, Liberty, that they are already looking at, and maybe they also go after U Mass. That would give C-USA 6 full members and 7 football. (yes, UMass and UConn would be a long way from UTEP and NMSU)
Maybe the best way for C-USA to survive would be for a block of Northern teams to join the way that the Texas teams joined the WAC. The Dakotas, Montana’s and Idaho would make a solid core. There could then be a 14 team league that would be a strong G5 league relatively quickly. Would probably have to have limited inter-divisional games.
If the northern schools actually want to go FBS, being invited to join C-USA would be an NCAA approved scenario. If the C-USA wants to survive, it could be the way to solvency. A true USA conference.
South/East
U Mass
U Conn
Liberty
FIU
La Tech
UTEP
NMSU
North/West
USD
SDSU
NDSU
UND
MSU
UM
UI
About as good a conference as there would be in G5. Would really have been nice to get Sioux Volley’s perspective on the latest round of realignment.

Rumors that CUSA is looking at New Mexico State, Liberty and U Conn (football only). They will be even more desperate if they lose MTU and WKU too.
-
Izzy isn’t the only one… UND received less votes in this week’s coach’ poll than last week.

Well, this thread being only on the second page the night before the game is validation of your post.

I dont expect they get an offer because thats a heck of a lot off travel for olympic sports.
Could it be like the new WAC?
iirc, the 2 divisions of the new WAC are not going to cross much for non-football Olympic sports. The Texas teams won’t be traveling to Arizona, Utah and California very often.
Still think it is an unlikely scenario.

Agreed. However, If there is a significant number of FCS schools that work their way into CUSA/FBS as a result of this big shakeup, enough to make the FCS undesirable, I think the Dakota's and Montana's (and like-minded schools in the north) should think about applying for an NCAA exemption/waiver for the creation of a new FBS conference. If this group of schools, which have a better profile than a significant chunk of FBS schools, is basically black-balled from FBS simply due to geographic proximity to existing FBS conferences, there would be a serious argument to be made that Anti Trust violations are being made by the NCAA. I think they approve the waiver.
If there is an interest among those schools to go FBS, this might be the way to get it done. Getting an invite to CUSA would be the door opening for moving to FBS.
Question is… do they (Dakota’s, Montana’s, et al) want to make the move?

That’s what joining the Summit was like about 10 years ago.

Does the Sun Belt gutting C-USA open the door for a Northern Division, and would the Dakota 4 be interested in pursuing it, perhaps with Northern Iowa and Missouri State or maybe the Montanas.
CUSA North
UND, NDSU, USD, SDSU, UNI, MoSt (or Montana/Montana St. if interested)
CUSA South
UTEP, New Mexico St., La. Tech, FIU, (MTSU & WKU if they stay, otherwise perhaps Liberty or FCS moveups)
There would be a big gap between the South and North Divisions.
Would be nice for New Mexico State to get an FBS home.
Would also put some USA into CUSA, instead of being Conference of the Southern USA.

Made the playoffs, but finished in the top third of the BSC. MSU was not conference champions.
