  1. There has been so much hand-wringing, so many theories for strengthening the Summit...

Would really like to see the formation of a Great Northern Conference - add the Montanas, Idaho, EWU. Probably a long shot to get them to leave the Big Sky.

Doubt the MVC will be willing to give up control of the MVFC to the Summit, even though they share offices, iirc. A nice idea though, if you could pull it off.

Get the MVC to add the Dakota 4. Their recent solution of adding Valpo suggests that will not happen.

IMHO, it seems that the fastest way to 'fix' this is by <choke> getting the old band back together. Entice Northern Colorado to leave the Big Sky and reunite the former NCC schools who have moved to D-I under the Summit banner. It will give the Summit 6 football teams, add a basketball team that has made a March Madness appearance and adds a baseball team (which wouldn't be as important if the Summit were to break off into their own football conference), but no men's soccer.

For soccer, the answer is probably to add UMKC.

The addition of UNC and UMKC would bring the Summit back to 10 after IPFW bolts next year and gives the Summit the baseball and soccer teams it needs. Plus it would make the option of Summit football possible with the Dakota 4, Western Illinos and Northern Colorado. Then add Minnesota State and/or Minnesota Dukuth as a move-up for insurance for WIU and Oral Roberts.

Don't like this idea as much as just staying put in the Big Sky, but afraid that ship has sailed and UND's move to the Summit is inevitable.

  2. Yes, it may have been the right decision at the time and under the circumstances, but it still stings that it happened.

Also would have preferred not having the best nickname in athletics replaced by such a bland, generic adjective/bird one like almost every other former Native American nicknamed school has done.

Is there anyone that actually thinks that Jones will not get a contract extension?  Does Drick (or any other current MBB player at UND) actually think that Jones will not be the coach next year?  I don't think this played any factor into his decision.

Where, at this point in time, would Jones go?

Is it possible, in the negotiations, that both Jones and Faison think they are in the power seat with Jones making larger demands and Faison thinking Jones has no other option?

You do know that in mid-major leagues, once conference play starts most schools RPI begins falling? You strengthen your SOS by scheduling quality out of conference opponents. Twenty game schedules only work for leagues with high RPI numbers top to bottom. The MVC and HL are not those leagues.

The HL will add one. They may add 2 next year but only if they raid the OVC for one, and get the second as a D2 move up (Southern Indiana).

The MVC will likely not add 2 next year, the will among the majority of the schools is to stay at 10 unless a big name (SLU, Belmont) decides to join.

Neither the MVC or HL can find schools to strengthen their leagues right now. Both are ham strung by geography and a lack of funds. The HL will look east and south and may take a look at a Purdue school. The MVC hope, HOPE they can get someone like SLU or Belmont to bite. They won't. The MVC still has not figured out they just aren't the draw they once were. Adding lower level schools for the sake of adding is a mistake which will doom your league to also ran status for decades.

MVC is looking more and more like a one bid conference. Replacing Creighton with Loyola and Wichita with Valpo will not make their profile better and intraconference games will not help them get a second bid. Horizon is in the same boat.

The possibility of the Summit getting two bids may be as good as either of those two at this point. Will depend on pre-conference scheduling more than anything.

Back on topic, has women's hockey been reinstated yet?

If the length of this thread is an indication, it is back stronger than ever. More activity in this thread than there was in all the WIH threads for the previous 4 years total!

    9/10 is good.

A 9/12 works also (8 FB games; 22 BB games) Two schools w/o basketball? UNO, UMKC.

PS - UNC won't get much love from DU and the Montanas. How about Weber State instead.

    New Mexico State?

  10. If the Horizon League takes IPFW with or without IUPUI out of the Summit, baseball will only have 5 teams. Would the Summit, for baseball,  add either Northern Colorado (WAC affiliate) or go after Dallas Baptist (MVC affiliate) to get back to 6? Would UMKC return (no baseball)?

UND not in a position to add baseball, but Summit League's auto bid would be in danger if Ft Wayne leaves.

Just another reason to question the move to the Summit.

on another note... Since UND is not eligible to win conference titles next season in the Big Sky - if UND would happen to win either MBB or WBB, is there any chance the Hawks would get an at-large bid?

Hello all, this is Jennifer, Elijah's mom. First of all, thank you to those who support my son going back to UND, I truly appreciate your positive thoughts and I will include you in my prayers.  "Geaux Sioux" prbly said it best by asking if it was everybody's business? Unless you were trying to fulfill your 100% scholarship, earned your starting position as a true freshman at this level and had a newborn baby to support and you never wavered, then by all means, question my son's "motives" question his integrity, question his character. He's a kid, who is now a father. You don't know the half of it, he came home and completed classes at our local tribal community college and maintained a full time job to help his  baby Kinsley. He knows now that in order to fully support her the rest of his life, he needs an education. He comes from educated people, I have a bachelors and masters from Minot State and have taught for 20 years. He knows the value of an education. Instead of assuming, message me and I'll let you know. Just the way some of you assume he has lived his whole life on this reservation, really?? He went to grade school in Minneapolis and attended the Mandan Public Schools where he did very well, thank you.

In this day of so many single parent families, I can't fathom how some of the posters on this board can take a position that it is wrong to be a father to your child. It just makes no freaking sense that some people think football is more important than being a complete person and choosing your priorities wisely.

Thank you for being a good role model for a young man who will obviously be a good role model, not only for his child, but also for people in your home town and the young people who are fans of UND who will be able to see that some choices are difficult, but the right decision will benefit the important people in the long run.

Here's hoping Mr Grady has a great career at UND followed by a successful pro career and some great opportunities in elementary education (eventually ;))
