The Defense will play big! You have the best Secondary in the conference! They will fill the gap left open by seniors left. UND finishes 10-1 with a Victory over NDSU! Not a Surprise win! Nor upset! UND will beat NDSU straight up! I said that!! Your Defense will step up and will be respected!! Mason is going to lead the Charge!! And They will follow his lead! UND has no Stress! People counting them out already!! 10-1

I like the way you think

What exactly are you suggesting? Tough to tell with your veil of passive aggression.

No p.a.  Genuinely appreciate your response. As a dumb internet dweeb, I didn't really understand your comment about only 1 FB in the class. Your answer tells me that Bubba, with a run-first offense, is losing recruiting battles with schools at UND's level.

The point of my original comment was that the Hawks are not getting good rb's and were willing to take on a less-study focused student because they can't get the rb's that have both good scholar records and D-I level football talent. I think we are on the same page, but did not express myself clearly.

Again, I sincerely appreciate your answer. Thank you Geaux

I did not say they didn’t offer more than one back. There are plenty of good backs to go around. My opinion, with loads of hindsight, is that we should have brought in two hs backs in that class.

So Bubba needs to be better at winning the recruiting battles. That makes sense. Thank you for your insights Geaux

I just think it was unwise to have one rb recruit in a class be a guy with a known academic risk. Especially with the impending graduation of two great backs.

Are you saying UND did not offer any other rb's?

With UND's relative (lack of) success vs the XDSU's, wouldn't the Hawks have to go out on the limb with some recruits to revive the program with a 'project' or two?

but, you were a player, so you would have a better grasp of the realities of the situation than I do

  5. Understand the lower cost concept, but Summit doesn't sponsor men's VB. I guess that is what you mean.
I think that cutting baseball was to set the stage to drop women's ice hockey, but feels short-sighted in light of UND's move to the autobid-sport-challenged Summit League. The loss of any one of several schools in the conference will be huge. Even the prospect of NDSU leaving can be argued, because they would jump if they get an invitation to another conference.
Unless your projections of a hybrid conference with the better Big Sky schools comes to fruition, the Summit has to be looking to bolster its membership with the likes of UMKC (soccer) and Northern Colorado (baseball and football, but there will likely be resistance to forming a football confer ence outside the MVFC). KC already left the Summit and Denver will likely oppose UNC, so those possibility of those additions feels remote. The Wisconsin schools are also a possibility, but unlikely.
It just seems that, historically, Douple and the Summit Presidents are recactionary, not proactive. The transient history of the conference is disconcerting until more than the core of the four Dakota schools add more stability among more members. It seems that there is talk every year about PUFW, ORU, Denver and even Omaha leaving or WIU closing. The Summit will always have this issue. Augustana will probably be added, St Thomas is several years away from D-I. Duluth, Mankato or any other D-II move-up will also have transition times. Will it have to become NCC 2.0 or can the Montanas really be convinced to form a Great North conference?

Ideally, men’s volleyball is much cheaper because it only needs to sponsor a few scholarships max.  There are men’s team sports like that, but NDSU and SDSU would probably not want those forced down their throats.  Tennis, with all the international scholarships and essentially no revenue, is an easy cut, but the Summit needs to reapprize it’s sports first.

Apologies, did not intend to thread-jack...

Losing PFW, WIU, ORU or Denver would sink the Summit if they don’t get more fb teams.  The Summit would not have anywhere the teams it’s needs to maintain autobids in men’s soccer and baseball.  Those two sports are by far the most important for the Summit’s continual big dance berth and UND doesn’t have either.  Augie or other DII’s wouldn’t help for at least five years.

Getting a couple more eligible FCS schools and sponsoring it would immediately save the Summit and the baseball and men’s soccer requirement go away.  Baseball and men’s soccer just don’t have teams in the Midwest that sponsor those sports as the MVC or Horizon would then be endangered.  Would have to take an MVC or Horizon school, and that would be highly unusual.

This might be a question that belongs in one of the conference threads... and probably not popular given the recent political climate...

since UND has left the Big Sky and is now in the Summit, can UND drop tennis and the international recruits and pick up a Summit-friendly  sport like soccer? I understand baseball was just dropped and is difficult to host games in the spring, but why is tennis given a pass post Big Sky? There should be plenty of local talent to support soccer.

Non Nirth Dakota ties don’t fair well at und

What? You mean Chaves has a mind of his own and doesn't let the #gobc tell him what to do?

    Fresh ideas.

no inside knowledge or anything but just based on reading around and talking to a couple people it sounds like Boschee and Herbst will be among the finalists. Hoping McCollum will as well but I haven't heard much about that.

Boschee, Herbst and whomever Chaves had targeted before the qualifications list was drawn up...

  10. I know this is a dumb question...

Does Kris McGarry have any real connection to UND? Other than Ralph and Betty, why does she even consider making donations to UND? Did she ever attend UND? Is it just a legacy thing?

again, I understand this is a dumb question, but I just wonder why so much emphasis is put on her/Englestad Foundation donations.

  11. Any news on the search for Shaw's replacement? In light of all the recent departures, this one is pretty far down the overall list of to-do's, but still curious

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Minimum 8 seasons of full-time collegiate coaching experience
    • Experience recruiting prospective student-athletes for collegiate teams
    • Valid Driver's License
    • Successful completion of a criminal history background check

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Masters or advanced degree
    • Demonstrated recruiting experience in the central time zone
    • Experience with recruiting and compliance software (Front Rush, ACS, ARMS or Jump Forward)
    • Head coaching experience at the collegiate level
    • Current head coach at a NCAA institution
    • Demonstrated success as a head or assistant coach with conference championships or a winning percentage of 60% or above
    • History of no major or Level 2 NCAA violations
    • University of North Dakota ties by either having attended or through employment
    • North Dakota ties by having lived or born in the state

8 years of coaching experience does not necessarily mean 8 years as a HEAD coach. Does Chaves already have his target and did he tailor these requirements to fit that particular individual?

    Popular? No.

The right question to ask. Yes.

This idea that every program should support itself or dissolve must die.

The hockey budget doesn't hinder the budget of other programs, because they make money.  The REA budget is what kills the non hockey sports.  Instead of using REA profits and investing in other programs/improving emberassing coaching salaries, an Iconic scoreboard is getting replaced.   What would 2 million dollars do for the football and basketball teams?  That is how much the REA's share of the new scoreboard cost, money that otherwise would flow back to UND.  Between these two options, where would the athletic department see a greater return on investment?  And just a reminder, the RAE operates as a non profit to benefit UND Athletics.

Isn't t his what got MK into trouble with KEM... So not likely to change, is it?

As someone who is an idiot in this, what makes SD be in such better position to pay their coaches than us? Does hockey have to do with that?

As someone who stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night...

Even though hockey is the cash cow of UND athletics, how much of their profits are shared with other teams? SDSU and USD basketball rules their winter program - and here is the Catch 22 of that... they have higher bb attendance, have more budget $ available for bb and so can pay their coaches more. This all leads to more wins which leads to higher attendance, more $...

This seems overly simplistic, but would UND's athletic budget without $600k going to hockey coaches plus airfare and lodging and training table and facilities have more $ available for football and basketball? Again, I understand that hockey lifts the boat, but (especially under the REA agreement as it stands) does it really lift all boats?

I understand this is not a popular view, but just want to pose the question.
