For those of you in the know...
who initiates campus visits?
in other words, did Omaha apply to the MVC or is the MVC looking at Omaha unsolicited to return to Omaha after losing Creighton? Another example would be Sioux Volley has said the MVC was interested in Belmont the last time around, but they are not scheduled for a campus visit (at least there is not one being reported). Is the MVC not visiting Belmont because they are not interested in being turned down or are they not invited to Belmont?
iirc, UND had applied to the Summit (and abruptly cancelled a campus visit by Douple) before they were accepted in the Big Sky, but there was really no press about the Big Sky making a campus visit to UND before the Sioux were accepted into the BSC. Was Faison working behind the scenes soliciting the Big Sky or was Fullerton working behind the scenes to rescue UND from football irrelevance?

I missed that where in the article. I saw Murray, Valpo and Milwaukee. For 12 teams
Post deleted... Not sure what I thought I was reading.

If the MVC invites Murray St and their football goes MVFC, does Youngstown football go to the Ohio Valley Conference?

A league with the Montana's and Idaho sounds great but I imagine the hard part would be selling it to Montana and getting them on board.
NDSU-UND
SDSU-USD
Omaha-Denver
Montana-Montana State
Idaho-EWU
NMSU-Weber State
You could quickly build a mid-major basketball conference that would easily rival the MVC and of course be a premiere FCS league with FBS potential.
Will be hard to get NMSU on board without FBS.
Sioux Volley's new WAC?

The MVC officials will visit Valpo and Murray St this week. No word on a possible 12th school. Eleven schools would make 20 conference games, which is what they might want.
If Murray State is invited, will it include football to the MVFC?
Valpo likely to stay non-scholarship in Patriot Pioneer with Drake?

They're close over on eGriz. The correct answer is ...
Idaho
Montana
Montana State
Eastern Washington
North Dakota
North Dakota State
South Dakota
South Dakota State
Omaha
Denver
That's 8 FB; 10 BB; easy scheduling. (7 conf FB games; 18 conf BB games w/travel partners)If you want 9 FB you also add another BB only school for a 9 FB / 12 BB alignment (8 FB games / 22 conf BB games). To me the FB would be UNoCo or NMSU (or fledgling Wichita State FB if they start up) and the BB only would be UMKC or Oral Bob.
The 9/12 alignment is better because of the balanced 8 FB games (4H / 4A).
Northern Iowa?

Just call it the.... NCC.
Or trade names with the MVC, since almost all their teams are east of the Mississippi and nowhere near the Missouri.

Not saying there aren't valid reasons for a fan to want UND in the Big Sky, but what about being in the Big Sky is more appealing to you personally for UND?
Why is the MVC more appealing to NDSU for you?

What happens to the Summit's auto bid if NDSU leaves and takes its baseball team, leaving only 5 teams? Basketball + soccer +

I live in Arizona. More Big Sky coverage here. When I was at UND (78 grad), the Big Sky was the conference I thought both UND and NDSU should join.
I disagree with the idea that UND will struggle in the Summit, this school year was fun to watch. 4 Big Sky banners in the 4 major team sports may not be repeated (ever), but it tells me that UND found its place in the Sky.
And to top it all off, the Big Sky gave UND a home when the MVFC didn't.

The Summit being a revolving door is more a product of it's location than anything. The Big Sky only remains stable because it's proximity to other Division I basketball conference footprints is remote. Teams and schools are always looking to better position themselves for success and ultimately put themselves in a more visible conference or a conference that "pays better". Stabilizing the Summit is exactly what is being done now.
Here's a link to a cool map that shows the Division I basketball conferences. http://collegesportsinfo.com/ncaa-map/
Quite the gap between eastern slope of the Rockies and the plains from eastern Dakotas to Eastern Texas. Only a few crossing from west to east (UTEP/CUSA, Denver/Summit) or east to west (UND/Big Sky). Still would have preferred UND stay in the Sky.

Is the MVC without Creighton and Wichita really a better conference? Will they still get the occasional more than 1 bid to The Dance?

Murray St to a 12 team MVFC would have to happen according to this writer
http://www.college-sports-journal/will-football-play-a-role-in-missouri-valley-conference-expansion/
This makes sense in light of UND being the 11th team in the MVFC. East/West divisions will let Youngstown make only 1 or 2 trips at the most to the Dakotas in a year. 5 intradivision games and 3 interdiction games in an 8 game season. Murray will also keep the balance of MVFC power leaning to the MVC.

especially if Snyder retires and Taylor hired Bohl to replace him

So the question is... Why is the MVC better than the Summit, especially now after WSU leaves?
full disclosure: still prefer the Big Sky better to the Summit

Does this have traction anywhere outside this board?

Would trade the Indiana alphabet soups for the Montanas in a heartbeat! With the decline of the MVC, maybe UNI would move to the Summit too.

Maybe Jones is holding out for a bigger raise than Faison is offering
-
According to ESPN, Jake's contract has been extended thru 2027 (two more years). Reports were that his last extension in 2015 was for $900,000 per year. This extension must put him at $1 Million or more a year. Congrats Coach.
-
So, when will it no longer be considered bad timing/poor taste to announce an extension and raises for Jones and his staff?

17 sports, with MGolf on life support.
There's Faison's 16 minimum.
However, I must note: 16 is FBS minimum; 14 is FCS minimum.

The harsh reality for the women's hockey supporters is that there is no way UND could have made that level of cost cutting without cutting women's hockey. Any other combination of teams/sports would not have been able to save the athletic dept as much as including women's hockey could. UND needs to maintain enough sports, Faison said 16, to remain NCAA compliant. Softball, soccer, tennis are not nearly as expensive combined as WIH was. The depth of cost cutting UND made yesterday clears the way for the other programs to be supported at a championship level, and should allow UND to pay the football and basketball staffs at competitive levels and allow them to keep their staff in place for more than a year at a time.
i still think the dropping of baseball last year was a set-up to clear Title IX compliance to drop women's hockey this year. Sad to see baseball had to take the hit, especially now that UND is heading to the Summit, but that might be why the team was cut a year ago.

Good bye swimming and diving

Thinking back to a post gfhockey made yesterday -that a neighbor of a S & D coach had said that sport was being cut makes me think that
1. gfhockey's info was good
and
2. At least the coaches knew before today' press conference. If they did know, there was the opportunity for them to tell their players, if they felt it was appropriate
so, if Idalski knew, like the S&D coach did, was he really out of town "recruiting"?

They should form a committee to come up with a new rainbow-friendly nickname that is unique, like Robins or Sparrows or Hawks so all districts, including the proposed Norman County West co-op, can rally behind it.
