75 schools that have D1 men's lacrosse and all of them are pretty much out East. You thought women's hockey was expensive, lacrosse at UND would more than likely have a huge cost just on travel alone.

Yeah,  I believe his advocacy is assuming other summit league schools add it as well. But even so, I'm not sold on it. Are these teams aren't gonna wanna come to the Dakotas for non-con games when they can play closer to home against better competition.

Then look at recruiting... pretty slim pickings around here. The Cities might have a few kids? Is LAX difficult to learn?

I haven't sat down and watched it much.

it is only the most popular sport in the world and with our aviation department pulling in people from all over the world...we could probably put together a good program like we did with internatinal players with women's hockey.......dawhoops!

Speaking of the women's hockey folks -> how pissed would they be if UND added a sport :D

I've driven by soccer and they don't have 100 fans paying $0. I've been to tennis and it had almost as many fans as the soccer games I've driven by.

Fewer coaches as well as only 2. Soccer has 3 and 3 support staff. I'd imagine someone also helps tennis, but no one is listed.

    Yeah I'm with you.

It was not well composed; brevity is key in humor. Textbook Minnesota passive aggressive too. But they earned the right to do it, just needed a few eyeballs and input before hitting send (like much of what is on social media).

It was funny. You seem to be overthinking this.

Minnesota hockey cracking a joke about UND doing a good job hosting a tourney their team didn't qualify for is funny. End of story.

Probably could've said the same thing about the big 3 sports when people wanted to add hockey way back when

Hockey had the benefit of being a Canadian sport in a town close to Canada and Minnesota, a state saturated with kids who could play. And a few countries overseas who could play.

LAX is  cute sport. But it doesn't fit here. There isn't a market for it. What next? Jai Alai?

few hundred more than tennis imo

Sure.  But Tennis ain't costing UND a ton of money. Probably one of the cheaper sports that can be offered.

Soccer seems like a drain on UND's very finite resources with limited (if any) upside. It's not like UND is swimming in financial resources.

What do you imagine the upside is in UND Soccer, assuming all things work out perfectly?

What I think would happen is we would probably suck, because the program would have poor facilities and it would be under funded.  The cost of the program would also erode the budgets of other underfunded Summit sports, and the extra games during the fall would further stretch the time of our athletic department staff, who already have crazy busy fall schedules having to host so many home matches for FB, Basketball, Womens Soccer, Volleyball, Hockey, etc.,

Where do you see the upside?  Seriously curious.  Does it make money?  What is attendance?  How much ticket revenue?

Also, can you explain why you think existing league schools would think your changes cause the Summit League to be more desirable?

SDSU and NDSU would have to leave the Big Twelve for wrestling.  Denver would have to leave the Big East for Lax.  In place would be a Summit League conference with a bunch of start up programs?

Wouldn't it be better to encourage schools to take the million per year hypothetical Lax budget and put it towards improving basketball?

Seriously curious about your thought process and would love to know WHY you think your proposed moves make sense.

I'm very confused as well. Schools like NDSU and UND should probably have the minimum number of sports possible, and pump as much money as they can into the sports that can drive revenue/enthusiasm. I don't see men's soccer doing that  in North Dakota. It looks like most teams get a few hundred fans.

Weak tweet.  Guessing Motzko wouldn’t approve of this.  Also, I bet their experience was top notch, as UND/REA/Scheels arena are pros at hosting regionals.  The classy thing would be to thank them for a great experience and maybe barb the fans separately.

That's what they did... in the tweet.

I would guess that they have a ton of money available.  For the '22-23 school year their tuition and fees totaled over $50k.  Most private schools in the area cost that much or more but I have always wondered what they do with all of that money.

    Tuition: $48,930
    Fees: $1,436

I wonder how many are actually paying that amount. In law school, our "tuition" was like $60K or something absurd, but I don't know anyone who was paying that.

and if Fargo, GF, Vermillion, Brookings, or Macomb can't sell out there average size home arena for a single elimination post season playoff game on a  friday night we all might as well just ask for membership in the Northern Sun Conference

I doubt any of them would sell out.
