  1. Does this concern anyone?

While UND has no made field goals and only one attempt on the season, the Panthers have one of the country’s best kickers.

Matthew Cook’s two field goals were UNI’s only points last weekend in a lopsided loss to South Dakota State in Brookings.

During that game, Cook became UNI’s No. 2 in all-time school scoring with 367 points. Running back David Johnson (2010-14) is the school record holder with 384 points.

Hunter Johannes, it's tough not to really like this guy watching him play and listening to him speak.  Feels like he should have been at North Dakota the whole time, props to Coach Berry for bringing him home.

Just think, if there had never been Covid, we would've never got to see him wear a UND sweater. The guy brings a lot of positive energy with him.

March 3, 1979, at Williams Arena.  Last game of regular season. UND with a chance to end a 12-year drought in WCHA titles, but we needed a win after Rodents won Friday's game.   A dozen of my closest buds joined several hundred noisy Sioux fans in the old barn.  (True optimists, we bought tickets for this final weekend series back in October, expecting (hoping?) this series would be the decider.)

After Friday's game, a couple guys said that star freshman goalie Bob Iwabuchi (who had stood on his head for most of the season) looked tired, so it was only a little surprise that veteran senior Bill Stankoven started the deciding game.

Hostile environment? Heck yes.  We were called "communists" and a lot worse by the local fauna (apparently because we had Canadians? but perhaps wearing yellow helmets with red flashing lights helped us stay obvious).  On the plus side, sitting in the corner of old Williams Arena helped our non-stop chants and songs carry quite well.

On the ice, UND got some early goals, Stankoven played very well, and when Dave Christian blasted a slap shot into an empty Gophers net in the final minute, we were delirious.    Final score UND 4, UM 2. We stayed and cheered for a full hour after the game, and got high fives from players and staff.

Virg Foss captured the sentiment well in Sunday's GF Herald:  "Welcome back, Billy the Kid."

I've gotten to know Virg over the years, and he's got some great stories. The guy is an amazing historian of all things UND hockey.

  4. This was the first UND vs. NDSU game I ever attended. From McFooley

The date was Oct. 30, 1993 — almost exactly 30 years ago — and prior to kickoff that day the then-Fighting Sioux hadn't defeated the mighty Bison in 12 years. Twelve long years. Twelve years that saw NDSU become the kings of NCAA Division II with five national championships in seven seasons and a collection of NFL players. UND was often a smudge on the bottom of the Bison's cleats during that stretch.

15 likely; 10 could be the X, unless Emerson is better and they want him to get some ice as the X.

Emerson has been practicing this week. Schloss asked Berry about that at the Press conference.

All students start as first year students (plebes) and go four years even if they transfer in from another school. They can opt out after first 2 years but after that they have the 8yr obligation. Tuition, books, room and board plus just under $1100 per month for all students. They can leave in 3rd or 4th yr but would have to serve as enlisted soldier for 2 years and may have to pay back school for costs of education. I wouldn’t think they will get anyone through the transfer portal.

I remember talking to some classmates from High School during Christmas one year and they said that service academy life was kind of tough.

  7. Matthew Semisch 2023-24 NCHC Season Preview: Coming off no Frozen Four appearances in 2023, conference teams aiming to ‘maximize their chances’ this year.

Matt is a little more objective than Ciskie.

    NORTH DAKOTA

HEAD COACH: Brad Berry (entering his ninth season at UND)
LAST SEASON: 18-15-6 (10-10-4 for 6th in NCHC)
    KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: F Jackson Blake (So., 16g-26a-42pts); F Riese Gaber (Sr., 20g-17a-37pts);
    KEY LOSSES: F Judd Caulfield (10g-9a-19 pts); D Chris Jandric (4g-29a-33pts); G Drew DeRidder (13-9-4, 2.56 GAA, .899 SV%)
KEY ADDITIONS: F Jayden Perron (Chicago Steel, USHL); F Cameron Berg (Omaha transfer); G Ludvig Persson (Miami transfer)
2023-24 PREDICTION: Last season was a tale of two halves for a North Dakota team that was picked to finish second in the NCHC. The Fighting Hawks were far more consistent in the second half, but a tough first half came back to bite them, and they missed out on the NCAA tournament. UND has 14 new faces for this season, and that feels like a lot, but the last time the Hawks had that many newcomers, two years ago, they were Penrose Cup winners as the NCHC’s regular season champions. I’ve got the Hawks second again, and I’m very interested to see what Persson will do with his new team, but after what happened last season, this is another wait-and-see pick.
    2023-24 PREDICTED FINISH: 2nd

Why would they play at Applebee's? Was the Betty booked with something else? ;) :D

Very Funny: I watched the Women play on Midco last night at Applebee's, that was an exciting match. :) :D
