But we don't know that a significant number of them would be opposed to the idea, it is purely speculation and conjecture at this point. It's not at all uncommon for secondary schools in a state to have the same nickname and logo as the flagship university. Let's move on shall we.
-
So high school athletics trumps athletics at the flag ship university in North Dakota? Do you have any idea how ridiculous that sounds? I never said my opinion matters more than anyone else's, I'm not sure where you got that from. There are a lot of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and fans who have a vested interest in UND athletics that post on this board with little to no connections to Grand Forks, are you saying our input and suggestions aren't as important as somebody who grew up in Grand Forks? We're all UND fans here, no need to treat each other like this.
-
That's not a good enough reason to pass on a unique nickname/logo that has strong historical ties to the state. If we can't be the Sioux, then we should be the Rough Riders with a badass logo that looks sick on a hockey jersey! I mean no disrespect to Central alums.
-
I really don't think it's a big deal to use the same nickname and and updated/ cooler logo of Teddy Roosevelt as a local high school. I'm not sure people in Montana, California, Colorado, Utah, Ohio, and Michigan are going to make that connection. We would be the only Rough Riders in the NCAA and it would be our sole identity.
-
There are currently nine universities using the Falcon mascot. We need to pick something cool that no other school is using.
-
I kinda like the Rough Rider logo that Cedar Rapids hockey team uses. Something like this would be sick! http://www.puckdrawn.com/.a/6a01157061294d970b0148c7ee40c2970c-pi

Rough Riders or Out Laws sound good to me. have to be honest, I hate the name Reapers, one sexual assault associated with the athletic dept. and you can imagine the clever play on words that the press and our rivals would use.
-
The guy has taken UND athletics into the 21st century, our future looks bright with him in the driver's seat! I hope he doesn't get poached by another school.
-
The Dakotas as well as the Montana schools are plagued with a "dream small" mentality. They will always find a reason why they shouldn't make the jump. Look how long it has taken UND to get to the FCS level and now that we're here we lack the facilities to take advantage of the WAC FBS option. I wonder what UND athletics would look like today if Ralph Engelstad played football instead of hockey?
-
If you're Idaho being in a conference with academic institutions like UND, UM, MSU, and UC Davis is not so bad, but do you also want to be affiliated with UNC, EWU, PSU, NAU and Weber State? This isn't just a drop for them athletically but socially as well. Likewise, UND, UM, MSU, and UC Davis should be thinking about their piers in the long run. I know some on here think that Denver has little to offer a conference in terms of athletics outside of hockey, but they have tremendous academic value and could have a lot of regional potential if they could find a way to fund a football team. I agree that the WAC is not stable and no one will or should touch it, but what about the ideal of creating a stable mid-west conference composed of flag ship institutions? I wouldn't be at all surprised if something like that isn't already in the works.

Would you feel differently if Denver could find a way to start a football program (extremely expensive for a private school like DU)?
-
They have a decent basketball program. I would like to add schools that are academic peers, schools like Denver, Miami, and Ohio would add a lot in that area. Your'e absolutely right about the distance for Oly sports being an issue, maybe football only if they were agreeable? Possibly throw in a football only Northern Illinois as well?
-
Who would you pick to replace them? I think NDSU, USD add great geographical rivals for UND. OU and Miami add solid state flagship schools as well as decent athletics, we could build off our future hockey rivalry with the Red Hawks for other sports. Denver would be a good academic addition as well as a traditional rival for us, not to mention their media market isn't to shabby. I might throw in Omaha if they picked football back up.

Football season is within sight and I'm stoked about UND's inaugural season in the Big Sky and a chance to make a playoff run! But it got me thinking, in the long run which schools (realistically) would I like to see UND in an FBS conference with down the road. Here's my picks thus far: UND NDSU USD SDSU Montana MSU Idaho Denver (olympic) Ohio U Miami (Ohio) Need one more to make it a round 10 for football. I think a conference like would provide for solid traditional and geographic rivalries and allow the majority of the teams to adjust to FBS play without getting slaughtered week in week out. Who would you like to see in a future FBS conference with UND?
-
I just saw this on another board. I know the Big 10 has been courting them for a while now but the Irish were always reluctant to give up football independence. The article looks shady and you would think ESPN and other bigger sports networks would be all over this story. Anybody heard anymore about this recently? If true, BTHC will have a huge recruiting advantage. http://sportales.com/football/notre-dame-joining-big-10/

Actually he said it was an indoor facility without specifying what it's use is for. More than likely it's an IPF and not a new indoor stadium, either way I think an announcement will be coming very soon about that and possibly several non-athletic donations.
-
108498 is most likely a Bison troll who's just trying to wind up UND fans, pay no attention. I have yet to read a positive comment from this person. I think attendance will be noticeably larger this season especially for the Montana game.
-
I normally get student hockey tickets because they are more than reasonable considering the cost and seat location. I think I will go with the $50 football season tickets, I'm to old to be binge drinking at half time.
-
I can't decide whether to buy season tickets or use the free student tickets. Both the Alerus and REA give students premium seating but I hate the fact that I can't sit back, drink a beer, and watch football as God intended. Either way I will be at every home game this year!
-
Looks like NDSU is kicking our butt in terms of votes.
-
I've know a lot of people in Nashville that watch the UND hockey games on Fox College Sports. Any word if they will be able to continue oing so with this Midco deal? Most of them want to know so they can cancel the additional channels on their sports package.
-
Are you thinking it's a basketball only alliance with two NCAA bids?
-
I take it you wouldn't want him playing for your favorite NFL team either?
-
You seriously believe that we don't already have players that smoke pot and use other other drugs such as oxycotin, ephedrine, and performance enhancers? I know for a fact that we do (I signed a confidentiality waiver and that's as far as I'm willing to speak on the matter). You would give up the chance at grabbing a player for one year that would give UND a shot at winning the Big Sky and possibly a national championship just because he smokes pot, a drug you can obtain legally in Montana with a prescription? If he was a crack head or a meth junky then I would agree but he's a young kid with a bright future who made a small mistake, we would be crazy not to take him. It's a moot point because as Sicatoka pointed out he's most likely going to stay Louisiana.
-
Trouble maker? He smokes pot, who cares! It's not like he's showering with little boys in the locker room. I can only hope that Muss and his staff are on the phone with him making him an offer. He's going to be a huge part of some lucky FCS team's (McNeese) defense and punt returning game. Would love to see him in a green and white jersey next season!
