You’re right, but there are other options that are potentially better for UND at this time. Need to try a different angle/philosophy to recruiting, scheme, team building, play-calling, strength&conditioning, player motivation, approach to big games, etc. Again, need to try something different, because the current setup is not going to get UND to the top of the mountain.
-
Yeah, and those were Mussman recruits ……
-
Recruiting is always key in college FB, better facilities will help, but ultimately it is the coaches who do the recruiting. Agree- need bigger, stronger, better players on defense … and offense … and specialists.
-
Key point. Recruiting is done by people, so you need the right people (coaches) in charge.
-
I think the poor record and duration of tenure all suggest it is time to move on. Bubba is not a top tier program builder nor does he have the leadership ability to catapult UND to a championship contender in big games. Recruiting is always key in college FB, better facilities will help, but ultimately it is the coaches who do the recruiting.
-
This is incredibly random and speculative.
-
You mean he won’t get a lifetime contract extension like how UND operates??
-
don’t tell that to Bubba!! Go to 5:43 mark -gonna need to clear house to try something different, and insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results
-
you’re right, it’s just that the “big game/big crowd” rhetoric equals big opportunities against good teams. Reflects on the fact that UND can’t consistently win against good teams (FBS or top FCS) in order to take the next step. It’s beyond a pattern or trend at this point; it’s the truth. UND continues to fail against good teams with Bubba. UND hasn’t been able to build a roster (or implement a scheme, or inject confidence around the program) that allows for wins in big games against good teams.
-
Even with 10,000+ the odds aren’t good … Disgusting trend which at this point is well established.
-
8-3 would be a success because it would mean the team has improved and is clicking on all cylinders come playoff time (given they’re 2-2 right now), but a A LOT of work ahead for Bubba and staff to get UND to that record come playoff time. It doesn’t seem likely right now. Next two games are huge for direction of program. Close loss to NDSU isn’t good enough. 12-15 vs crowds of 10,000+ since 2016. This program does not have enough leadership or vision right now. Used to always say big players make big plays in big games, well Bubba and his staff certainly don’t make big coaching decisions in big games. With all that, this is also a recruiting issue. UND wasn’t even in the game from the start yesterday; SDSU was simply a bigger, physical, more talented team, but should we tolerate such a talent differential? No- no excuse. It’s Brookings SD vs Grand Forks ND. SDSU vs UND. No reason or excuse for such a talent and coaching differential. Plus this current team is senior-laden to make matters worse.

Still missing. Been missing nearly exclusively under this current regime. 0-8 versus crowds of 13,000+ since 2016. 12-15 versus crowds of 10,000+ since 2016. Big crowds = Big games, which for UND fb has meant ongoing failure and consistently being out-coached. Getting very very close to that time to move on. Man, what ~ 2014-2016 could have been with Kalen DeBoer … but, well, the “good ol’ boy club” really struck out UND football in that one. Just need to make sure this lesson is applied and we learn from our mistakes in future decisions. The Roger Thomas, Dale Lennon, Bubba Schweigert collection years are over folks … it is time to move on.

Boise State lost. Air force, Fresno, Wyoming won. Another FBS opportunity squandered. “But they’re FBS … 99% FCS teams would lose” Apologists will do what they do best … apologize.

Well, another opportunity squandered. More apathy, especially for the causal crowd/fans that don’t partake in a messaging board like this. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” 0-8 versus crowds of 13,000+ since 2016. 12-15 versus crowds of 10,000+ since 2016. Big crowds = Big games, which for UND fb has meant ongoing failure and consistently being out-coached. New leadership is definitely needed, but at this early point in the season, it’s about trying new players, new schemes/philosophy, new styles, new approaches to preparation/ pregame, etc. Need to establish the line of scrimmage and stop the run. QB spot is expendable based the last 2 games; need a bigger, stronger, more athletic player that also protects the ball. Not solely a game manager. Play-calling to better emphasize the running game needs to improve. Running backs are okay, but could definitely be better there. Attempted and failed in the transfer portal for that spot. Defensively, consider loading the box, stop the run, inevitably give up some big passing plays. Needs to happen. Need better players up front, bigger/ stronger linemen, more physical linebackers. It’s a long season, and this was against FCS No. 1, but this UND FB program is not currently set up to take the next step. UND is a top 25 team, but it has no business being a top 10 team with how it is currently run. How to accomplish that next step? Positive change. Does UND administration want a top 10 football program to compete with conference mates NDSU and SDSU, or is top 25 good enough? What do the boosters want? Would they even travel to Frisco in January or would hockey be too important?

Anytime you extend a coach that goes 3-8 (2017) and 5-6 (2021) it makes you wonder what’s impairing the vision and decision-making up top…
-
Gonna wait 24 hours before commenting on this one. Ouch! 0-8 now since 2016 vs 13,000+ (big games/big crowds)
-
… Go Hawks!
-
Game Day! South Dakota bound to watch UND pull the upset…
-
Classic. Ran that double wing counter in high school ball years ago!
-
Top quintile shouldn’t be the goal. Won’t win any championships. Reconfirming the positives over and over again is nice and all, but need to bolster the weaknesses also
-
I agree, hope it comes to fruition.

So, you want UND to be an average/median FCS team? Again, mediocrity. Not “silly”. It’s laughable to phrase it like that. Sample size is 7 games, but UND is 0-7 in those games. That’s bad, in case you didn’t know that. Win at least 2 or 3? And the 10-12k crowd sizes still only offer a 0.500 record: that’s not good enough. You just exemplify the opposite mindset of a champion, and UND (including leadership) needs more. And I stated that UND can’t sell out games *other than when NDSU comes to town* … the attendance number /metric portrays “big games”… more people show up to watch “big games”. Would aptly like to see UND win said “big games”. Also 13,000 is the approximate capacity of the Alerus Center, not a random number. nonetheless, your unimpressive attempt to undermine my point and identified statistic is appreciated, but I for good reason don’t agree with it. You failed to truly refute it. “Champions behave like champions before they are champions” -Bill Walsh As for this week, getting back on topic; some (for example @jdub27) may say it is again not likely nor should it be expected that UND win on Saturday versus South Dakota State. Big crowd, but tough road opponent. I won’t sway from my approach. It will be tough and UND is rightfully the underdog, but if we all as UND supporters want to see UND take the next step, WIN THE DAMN GAME AND EXPECT TO DO SO. Otherwise, at some point, you can’t keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results. Consider changes, including with leadership.
-
Amen!! Will get better if they win said roadtrips. Was in Boise, I’ll be in Brookings.
-
Sample size isn’t huge, 7 games. Facts are still facts. Nothing imaginary about records / stats / facts. You’re justifying mediocrity again. Team needs to put up or shut up. Haven’t done it with Bubba. This isn’t DII anymore. Can’t just win in front of 5k-10k crowds and get to the next tier. Need to win big games. beat Montana State in 2016 in front of 19507 fans by score of 17-15 … since … 2017 L 16-37 @ Utah 2018 L 17-41 @ Montana 2019 L 7-38 @ NDSU 2021 L 24-48 @ Utah State 2022 L 17-38 @ Nebraska 2022 L 21-42 @ NDSU 2023 L 18-42 @ Boise State A lot more loses at Alerus Center against FCS teams in attendance range of 10-12k (can’t ever seem to sell the place out unless NDSU comes to town). UND is approximately 0.500 since 2016 in games with attendance 10k+ if you exclude the games above. You can spin it anyway you want, but this staff/program has underperformed since 2016. 2017 was a fireable offense, and it hasn’t skyrocketed since. *BUT* - beauty is can right the ship this weekend in Brookings.
