Case in point

Doubt an offensive guard on this team would have the tenacity and mindset to do anything measurable on defense. Need to recruit better defensive linemen and keep building the culture. Hate to say it, but the defensive linemen room culture is not where it needs to be yet. Need bigger, nastier guys on the defensive line at UND. As for Hergel, he’s the exception to this. He is definitely nasty. UND needs 4 more like him on the line and the same mindset on defensive line. Couple times last week Hergel was blocking NDSU defenders into the bench. He has the mindset of a champion.

This season is definitely unique, but if the playoffs are held and completed, and the perennial top 5 to 10 programs are participating, I don’t see how you can degrade the eventual champion. They will have earned themselves an FCS championship - rightfully so. now, of course, knowing how NDSU fans work, it is inevitable that NDSU will argue for the above if they win but will scream inequity if NDSU is not the champion this spring. Predictably pathetic fan base in Fargo.
-
Went to the game. Had a guy behind me yell “Sioux suck sh*t” the entire game and another guy in front of me criticize “the guy in the wheel chair”. Every fan base has them, but this NDSU fan base has a higher than average number of morons. Pathetic. The idea this isn’t a rivalry anymore is nonsensical propaganda from the Fargo media. UND was not physical enough today to win. That was the difference. The defense could not stop a FB from running all over them. The missed XP hurt momentum despite Weah’s huge play. Lastly, UND’s offense certainly could have done more. Schuster and the receivers need to be able to make more plays consistently; missed on opportunities in the passing game. On to the next game. Have to regroup and put it together against Youngstown St. UND will certainly get a chance again - possibly even this spring - against NDSU. Need to make the next one count.

Ag school has tons of talent. Their defensive line is deep and they have talented linebackers and defensive backs. Their special teams is top notch. Offense has been slow out of the gate thus far but their freshman QB is mobile and they still have dynamic play makers, including a couple real good tailbacks and #1 Watson is fast playmaker on the outside. UND needs to handle the moment and play a good, clean, physical game to get this win.
-
Obviously a huge opportunity for UND against the ag school. The effect of NDSU’s dominance on the perception of UND football in the region cannot be overstated. In order for UND to win, UND has to play a disciplined game, commit minimal to no penalties, and be without turnovers. If UND plays a clean game like that, they definitely have a chance to win and significantly change the perception of UND vs NDSU football in the region.

Everything being centralized in Fargo has been been awful for Grand Forks, UND, and the northern region. Fargo only cares about Fargo, so having all media come out of Fargo predictably was not going to work for UND and Grand Forks. Can’t imagine the media and printing presence reverting back to Grand Forks, so stuck with this mess. UND football needs to take the next step on 3/20/21 in uprooting the evil giant in Fargo.
-
Not the cleanest game by UND. There is definitely still work to be done. Need to protect the ball better. But UND was without doubt the better team today and was more disciplined than WIU. Now, the big bullseye we’ve all been waiting for next weekend on March 20th .... Go Hawks Football!

Griebel has now made MULTIPLE mistakes today. He’s done at punt returner as far as I’m concerned. Keeping him in at this point would be awful.
-
I did. Bout time UND used that nickel package. Eric Schmidt never heard of that I guess.
-
Just wait til the second half. If no brutal mistakes by UND, then at this rate, UND will eventually bust it open in the second half.
-
WIU mistakes/penalties helping out UND. Griebel mistake on special teams for UND. Need better return play. Too many “mistakes” in this game early on. Damn. Clean it up.
-
First mistake of game for UND - Turnover. Have to do better. Ball security is critical in ALL games.
-
The score will take care of itself if UND plays to its potential and is a focused football team. What does that mean? Only stat lines I am looking at will be penalties/penalty yards and turnovers. If UND can grow up (compared to previous road record) and play disciplined football (no turnovers, minimal to no penalties), then I will be happy. Of course, UND will also win the game if that happens. If UND is to end up where we want them to go, they need to keep growing and be a disciplined football team on the road.

Tommy "Gun" Schuster is the real deal. He is a winner. Wins state championship in high school in Michigan. Wins Michigan Player of the Year. Plays as a true freshman for UND against Sam Houston State (ranked opponent) and wins. Now during his first year as the full time starter for UND he has UND 3-0 in the MVFC with a top 5 team ranking. Is this all coincidence? I think not. All you quarterback coaches out there need to step back, stop examining the trees, and just look at/appreciate the forest. Tommy Schuster is a winning quarterback with the intangibles. He's leading UND football to big things. As I said before, Danny Freund as OC/QB coach has been tremendous also.

Cha-Ching! Winner Winner here! Freund has put a ton of effort and ingenuity into this offense. That along with the promising young talent UND has recruited all looks to be leading to a bright future.
-
The missed PAT and final defensive series were both momentum killers. Need to do better. But, of course, happy that UND is leading at half. FINISH STRONG!
-
I do not know much about SIU, but I like where Danny Freund is taking this offense. He is youthful and proactive with the offensive scheme, which UND has not had for a long, long time. I expect there could be some growing pains, but this is the first game in February for SIU too. I like that it is at home at the Alerus Center. I expect the offense to be fine. The defense has some key returners too, which should help Bubba and first year DC Brett Holinka with the defense. I expect UND to win, and would be disappointed if UND loses.

Schuster is definitely the favorite going into the season. The other two are true freshmen and Schuster won a game for UND against a ranked opponent in 2019. There's no guarantees, but Schuster is the early favorite for sure.
-
This a good one - I'll go with sell but he will be close (~900 yards)

As the preview states several times, UND's loss to Nicholls State in the playoffs was a bad one and certainly left a bad impression going into 2020. Sure, the contest was probably closer than the score indicated, but UND looked pathetic stopping the run and running the ball in that game. Couple that with the fact UND loses its top tackler on defense, top defensive linemen, top power runner on offense, and will start a freshman quarterback, the prospects of the 2020 season are not good for UND football. That being said, football is a sport that can always surprise, particularly if the coaches do a good job preparing the players. UND will likely have a rough go of it early on, but I hope they can catch fire by the end of the season.
-
UND’s young quarterbacks will have to grow up in a hurry based on the roster. No upperclassmen in the QB room and limited reps due to the pandemic. There will certainly be some growing pains this season. Heck, even with senior Ketteringham in 2019 there were issues. As mentioned previously, the best thing UND can do is strengthen their offensive line and running game in order to move forward offensively.

The "Brockstar" was fun, but it wasn't monumental or game-changing by any means. I would say it did help win the Sam Houston State game, when Andrew Zimmerman got injured. Otherwise, it was just a fun wrinkle. When it mattered most, in the playoffs down at Nicholls State, the offense was very tough to watch. UND needs to be able to do better at the line of scrimmage consistently, not just with gadget plays/formations.
