  1. He didn’t. This a rumor and not true. Bubba didn’t hold back Fruechte one bit.
  2. Agree- the love affair with Fruechte is unjustified.
  3. Nah, no success as a head coach anywhere (never even been a head coach). Vikings? Ha! He gonna recruit a professional athlete to play for UND? Good one …
  4. Meh… no proven success. UND offense was fine this year but was a dud against good teams (Iowa State, NDSU, SDSU, and even Illinois State to a degree).
  5. C’mon man, Schmidt could do well at UND, but let’s not act like he walks on water. His defenses choked away two playoff games in 2016 at home vs a CAA team and on the road in 2019 versus a Southland Conference team! Can’t blame either to injuries … And 2024 San Diego State roster was decimated by injuries also, was it? There are pros and cons, always are. Schmidt had a good run with DeBoer at Fresno and Washington, but those teams won cause of their offense, not their defense. Im weary on Schmidt’s ability to knockoff NDSU and SDSU, I think we may see more “Bubba Ball” with Schmidt as head coach but no one knows for sure.
  6. Great way to look at it honestly.
  7. No, sort of like Schmidt, lots of coaching stops, limited success, although Schmidt definitely got in on some winning with DeBoer at Fresno and Washington. Schmidt > Tibesar, but I’d hope there is a better applicant than both.
  8. Amen
  9. Think Deion Sanders and Colorado? Eddie George and Tennessee State …
  10. They applied back in 2013 (Kalen DeBoer) back when players still needed to shovel snow off the field just to practice, so they should be applying now! In 2024, with brand new facilities and an in increasing salary pool, I’m sure some good candidates applied. Big-time potential for UND football. Now up to Chaves to pick the right one and sell it ……
  11. If you don’t want Schmidt, you can’t want Fruechte. I’m dead serious - how can you say Fruechte is going to be better than Schmidt? Schmidt was at least coaching on winning teams (not anymore, which has me spooked on him also) and also was on championship contending teams at the FBS level. Fruechte hasn’t produced or won squat as a college coach yet… and there’s no proof that he will. If he’s hired, I hope he wins a ton, but since he’s not officially hired as head coach, it is beyond fair to question his ability to get the job done. Fruechte is a young, relatively inexperienced coach that has been a part of two losing teams for two different schools the past two years, and he has no head coach experience. That does nothing for me … Accomplishments as a player don’t mean anything in terms of coaching. More importantly, endorsements from current players (many of whom may not even start next year or should start next year), former friends and teammates should honestly carry the least amount of weight possible. Of course they will be in their buddy’s corner.
  12. Let’s look at Arizona State, albeit FBS; A lot of talk about other coaches and teams, but to go from 3-9 last year to 11-2 and win the conference in your first season in the league (new Big 12), and secure a CFP spot is incredible. What the young Kenny Dillingham is doing is quite remarkable. Young, hungry and local pride (he’s from Phoenix metro) appears to not be a bad combo. Also, as some on here might like it, this is a knock against Beau Baldwin - they fired him and the results they got this year have been remarkable. Also, proves quick turnarounds are possible in CFB. No reason to be overly complacent, or justify coaches who go on losing season after season.
  13. Too bad. Luke Schleusner and that Idaho offense were looking pretty good …
  14. Wow, Luke Schleusner and Idaho …
  15. You’ll be okay. As for UND football, we’ll see …
  16. Absolutely. An absolute must. Would be a real slap in the face *if* the UND guy who went away, and made great new “FBS connections”, then gets hired back and keeps the majority of the current UND staff in place …
  17. Never changes.
  18. If in fact that’s the case, which only time will tell, then we’ll be fine.
  19. Players win games. Coaches recruit the players. 2016 Bubba and Schmidt defense choked at home vs CAA Richmond …
  20. They didn’t work from 2014-2019, but maybe DeBoer retrained him into a new person, although 2024 did not suggest that.
  21. No one here, if they are actually a fan of UND, should be hoping the new coach fails before they even coach their first game or season at UND, but it’s okay to have an opinion on whether they were the best choice or not. How can you blame UND fans, especially diehards, for being cautious. We all remember the decision to hire Bubba Schweigert over Kalen DeBoer …
  22. Not hedging, will support whoever they hire, just explaining why Schmidt shouldn’t be considered a slam dunk and he’s not really in my top 5. Then again, though, I don’t know who all applied. Schmidt was always a favorite from the start. Remember, Schmidt is an understudy of Bubba, so will there be too many similarities?
  23. That will be everyone’s argument that endorsed this decision, but that remains to be seen. If UND hires Schmidt, and San Diego State’s defense does much better in 2025, and UND struggles with Schmidt in year one, there will be a lot of early sandbagging …
  24. Didn’t look it at San Diego State in 2024… looked like San Diego State hired Bubba and not DeBoer
  25. Still runs a porous defense from what I saw of 2024 San Diego State … but maybe he just had bad players … and we should excuse his non-playoff success defenses from 2014-2019 at UND.
