You have mentioned one of about 10 deficiencies that this year’s offensive direction for UND entailed …. need adjustment/change on offense in order to take the next step.

Playoffs Second Round 12/6/25: UND @ Tarleton State
UND-FB-FAN replied to UND-FB-FAN's topic in Football
Either would be a reasonable improvement, but there’s likely a wild card candidate in there you haven’t mentioned based on Schmidt’s connections from past stops (San Diego State, Washington, Fresno State). Kalen DeBoer runs a juggernaut of an offense so someone from that background has to be (or should be) the favorite. It’s just hard to outbid a lot of those programs - especially Bama - unless Chaves and Armacost have a “Eureka moment” and open up the damn checkbook. Again, this is just speculation and may have no basis, but at this time of year, much is. Also, this isn’t college football like it was 25 years ago; hell, it isn’t like it was 5 years ago. A lot of cycling with coaches and players. UND opted into revenue sharing. They want to be contemporary and compete (or at least I hope so). They need to play “the game”. -

This is controversial and folks will argue about this but my gut feeling is you’re correct. It was based on them just being hired less than a year earlier and Chaves didn’t want them one and done. It was a “UND nice” gesture that really was inappropriate for Chaves to do considering Coach Schmidt’s FBS connections; it also would disrespect the autonomy usually handed out to a deserving head coach hire. Bubba’s residual salary also a factor perhaps as well (and/or part of the deal that Bubba cut with his “reassignment”). Anyways, it’s controversial for sure and won’t be fully disclosed (ever), but there’s something to this given the entire “behind the scene” circumstances that played out a year ago in November/December 2024 that still hasn’t completely come out. Ultimately, it’s time to stop the political correctness and back off, Chaves, and let the man do his job. Fund this thing appropriately also. We got the funds just need to liberate them. -
I agree, and both problems (QB play, offensive game planning and play calling) are bundled up into the responsibilities of one person …

HC fires inept OC. HC hires more competent replacement OC. Problem (somewhat) solved. Still need to keep recruiting and improving the talent, especially outside (receiver) and always always quarterback. Transfer portal time …

There’s always work to do, never stops. Some decisions are easy, some decisions are hard. Good teams/leaders make the hard decisions look easy. We’ll get there … soon. Head up.

Good luck, but margin wasn’t that wide. UND played awful. Tarleton is a good squad, but certainly not much better than UND this season. Once again, good luck. -

That’s a foolish hill to die on. It was good because the competition was lesser the first half of the season. And this is a “what have you done for me lately” business. Always has been, always will be. -

Well it should. The OC was “good” when UND was playing poorer competition to start the season. That’s clear. There was then signifiant regression after that against the competition that UND needs to be good against to get to where they ultimately want to go. For example, today, UND gave the ball only 5 times to Gaven Ziebarth despite him averaging 9.4 yards per carry! On the flip side, they let Kaminski (coming off a concussion) run 11 times as their leading ball carrier. He was awful in the passing game. It’s time for a change (or at least open competition) at quarterback. There needs to be a different direction at offensive coordinator if we can secure someone that Schmidt has more faith in. The idea that they need a championship QB first and then see what OC does is really quite controversial … the QB play is largely a product of the work arranged by the OC/QB coach (same person here). The OC shares the blame 50/50 as far as I’m concerned. And having a better QB won’t address the critical play-calling concerns and personnel misuse… -
Nah… not really. Don’t have to keep putting that sh*t up on a pedestal.

We can all get off the Simon train now … Great kid and person, but let’s all move on. Bright future to look forward to. -

I’ve seen this movie before … All apart of the plan. The transition of power in ND football is well underway … History repeat itself as they say. The best predictor of the future is the past.

You don’t think the defense is playing better because of “coaching decisions”…. This team / program is much above what they were with Bubba -

Yes. Please. So obvious. Not a top tier (or even mid tier) D1 coordinator. Who would’ve thought the jump from NSIC to MVFC would be too big? Anyone … -
