Satrom challenges Hoeven on higher education By Mike Nowatzki mnowatzki@forumcomm.com The Forum - 02/26/2004 The $50 million that Gov. John Hoeven wants to spend on campus "centers of excellence" should be used to offset tuition increases, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Joe Satrom said Wednesday at Fargo. Satrom said if elected governor he would use the money to triple the state grant program for college students. Only 10.6 percent of the program's 24,492 applicants were funded last year, he said. http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=51422 Simply put Satrom is an idiot. Granted College is getting more expensive... but didn't we read an article a couple of days ago about how more ND youth are going to college than in any other state. Also I highly doubt any student really wanting to go to college can't afford to do it through grants loans, sholies, military etc. So apparently going to and paying for college isn't ND's problem. Obviously keeping Grad's in state is. So instead of investing money in what could produce relatively high-paying jogs, we are going to give more grants to students who are going to college here anyway and then not give them any incentive to stay in the state? (read high paying jobs... not that that forgiving a few thousand in college loan BS that was touted by some morons recently.) I don't get it... another example of North Dakotans thinking small.

PSAC is limited to 25 scholies (out of 36). NE-10 is non scholarship (but do give some aid to athletes) don't know about WVIAV... but considering they don't make the playoffs a whole lot.. I would say they don't give the full number.
-
You mean the 5/8 rule? It means you can only give out 5 new scholarships to one class and 8 scholarships over 2 recruiting classes... I am guessing D2 does not have this.
-
No team other than UND, NDSU, UNC and UNO has made the playoffs from the NCC since 1993. UM-Duluth (new to the NCC next year) did make the playoffs in 2002 from the NSIC, but it will be interesting to see how than can compete in the NCC. SCSU has been much improved the last two years but they lose their QB. I don't see anybody other than UNO or UND winning the NCC next year.

Actually Keaveny started out playing Basketball (NDSCS) then went to UND for a while for baseball then went to SWMS for Basketball again... but I do agree with you.

I should have put a timeline out there ... there is some momentum for the BB ban to be reduced from 13-5 yrs. If SDSU is in the Mid-Con (obviously this is a big IF... but then again I stated the whole scenario is a very very long shot) 5-8 yrs from now I think they could be competitive with a couple extra scholies and a DI label in recruiting. Then if they are competitive for another 5-10 years, some shakeups in the MVC (S. Illinois will become more attractive to other confs) I don't think an MVC bid is inconceivable (SDSU is driving distance from UNI, Drake, Creighton,... a lot can happen in 10-20 years. and once again bear in mind I said I doubt any of this will happen...

Interesting but don't see either of us going to the Big Sky without the other. (I personally would like Sac St to leave the Sky and UNC, NDSU, and SDSU enter). SDSU does have a slight advantage (200 mi) over NDSU in geography with regards to virtually every D1 conference. If NDSU were to join the Big Sky on a longshot (again not going to happen) SDSU could join the new Great West or perhaps even Gateway (they were considering adding 1 school) for FB and perhaps the mid-con for BB. Which may not be that bad of a deal as down the road SDSU could conceivably "upgrade" to the Missouri Valley the best "mid-major" BB conference.

I am sure UND fans are comforted knowing that RT has his consigliere close by at all times. well they're not... don't know what else to tell you ? first you say the contract won't be home/home... now you say it is home/home but NDSU wants the first two games at home... did you sneak in and "look" at the contract without reading it again
-
isn't a little bit early to be drinking legend close but I beleive the sholarships will be raised to 54 It is obvious that you "saw it " and didn't read it NDSU wants to continue playing UND, said NDSU athletic director Gene Taylor. He said the hope is to sign a home-and-home deal. Asked if he would consider offering UND a guarantee, Taylor said,

at this point I beleive Regional Rankings are taken directly from the BB SSI and at the end of the year the commitee gets together to select the teams for the regional...

http://www.dailysentinel.com/news/newsfd/a...CY07EXkLgh7UqGN no personal opinion... just thought I would put it out there

UND has went to the NC game twice without playing a road playoff game... also UND has never won a road playoff game... considering UND's record in the Alerus... if I were a UND fan (thank goodness I am not ) I would want to play as few road games as possible in an effort to secure homefield
-
that's what I figured but I didn't want to start the debate again we don't need any more of this over the game
-
So UND holds a press conference announcing their 04 schedule.... and less than a week later advertises for an additional game
-
I beleive you are correct on the NDSU side... but I don't think the Alerus has sold out for any non-NDSU games... not for the UCD semi game 11696 (capacity 13500) http://www.fightingsioux.com/sports/footba...001/UNDFB14.HTM that is the only game of I could think of that would be close... you can check fightingsioux.com ...but I don't think you will find any non-NDSU sellouts.

He is playing at NDSCS next year... he was unable to transfer out this semester due to NCAA rules so he will play at NDSCS this fall and probably transfer next winter so he is eligbile for spring ball. I think UND remains a possibility but I think he has had some "feelers" from MAC schools and IAA's. Also UND is loaded with LB's so that may limit the amount of scholarship money they are able to give and playing time.

I beleive it was this eloquent post from SiouxMeNow.... it is interesting how threads take a life of their own...NHL to Research Dollars.... Hallstrom to Ath Dept finances etc...

1. the same reason UND asked for 13 million for an athletic complex.... 2a "Fargodome subcommittee concluded the dome should pay for the proposed project after two hours of discussion Tuesday....This way, the dome will not give up ownership of the space, said Keith Bjerke, Dome Authority member and NDSU vice president for university relations.... http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=47981 2b. NHL loses almost $300 million; strike threatened!

You would think having a Medical School/Law School would level the playing field as I beleive there may be a dollar or two in Medical Research (cancer?) as opposed to lowly "ag research"... also since Carnegie Classification is based solely on number of grad students (essentially employees)... would you rather work for a smaller company with a larger budget... or a larger company with a smaller budget .. also let me state that I am proud of research done by both universities as it is beneficial to the state of ND (jobs, $ etc)
