The thing is, if not NHL, then not that much money...this is for non-first rounders: $140k to sign, after taxes and agent fees nets you about $80k, which is a nice down payment on a slightly above average house...depending on where you live...certainly not above average in the big metro areas. $70k per isn't garbage, but it won't make life easy- especially with the travel- its less than entry level business consultants make to travel the same. you do get summers off to some degree. watch slap shot to get a feel for the minors.

pogo's chance at the NHL is a Malone or Vandevelde path- 4 years in college- show up at camp a physical beast with an extra skill set Like face-offs or pk...turning now and I think he's a solid 6 year AHLer with 40 NHL games along the way.

Agree this is confusing. Too many variables in play...age of signing...AHL vs NHL games. I have thoroughly confused myself

I read this as AHL doesn't count. The point is moot for CHLers, because they can't play in the AHL if they are CHL eligible. I don't think AHL contracts count vs NHL free agency- but I could be wrong. In the free agency rules, all measures of "FA groups"are based on NHL games...
