According to the Dakota Student, Smette was a UND student before transferring to NDSU. My condolences to all who knew both of these soldiers.

Very true, there are going to be idiot parents everywhere. I was not trying to say that the MHD parents are better than Fargo parents. Just the Moorhead coaches do not give in to these whining parents, like the Fargo (North anyway) coaching staff does. The mentality in North Fargo is, the same 17 kids that play squirt A's should be the varsity team. As anyone familiar with hockey knows, often times a kid can be a great squirt player and never get much better. Likewise the worse Pee-Wee can be one of the better high school players. Look at a Raider bantam A and B game sometime. I guarantee you will see 3-4 players on these teams that should be switched. But if a kids Dad complains enough or is on the board of directers or throws around enough money, junior is going to be on that A team, even if he rides the bench the entire year.

Every year I was involved w/ the tourney the A division had double the teams, not that it matters. Fargo South could become a hockey powerhouse over the next few years. Their JV team beat Moorhead, which was Moorheads first loss at the JV level in 2 seasons. No Fargo school will ever be at Moorhead's level unless they reconfigure how the youth organizations are run. I could go on for hours about Fargo youth hockey, I coached their for 5 years. In short, it boils down to politics. My cousin is very skilled (don't know why I missed the genes) and played on the Raider 'A' team every year. When he was a second year bantam, his select coaches told him he should play high school if he wanted to continue improving. He tried out for North and the parents had a hissy fit - how could a 9th grader play above our precious child they cried. Even though his skill level would probably put him on the first varsity line he played first line JV where he played 1 or 2 periods of JV and sat on the bench for varsity. The next select camp he went to the coaches told him he had gotten worse. He stuck it out one more year, then transferred to Moorhead. My point is the coaching in Moorhead's youth system starts with the high school coaches. They all coach the same style and the kids play solely on ability, not how much the parents complain. The few North and South games I've to this year all I hear is the parents complaining about how their precious is a star and should get more icetime. The Moorhead games I've gone to this year the talk is about how good or bad the team is, not the individual kid. I could go on and on with this subject. If anyone else wants to discuss local hockey maybe the thread should be moved off the Sioux hockey board? I don't mind keeping it here if nobody else has any problems though.

GF won the tourny a few times until they made a rule they cannot have 'all-star' teams. GF combined their top players. The year I played in it, GF won it. I believe that was the second year they had it. I coached in it a few years ago and Edina won it. I know Spokane WA has won it as well as a team from CA. After GF's streak Bloomington Jefferson won it a few times. I heard the Flyers almost won it a few years ago. South is going to have some good teams in the next few years. Too bad the same cannot be said for North

While they are similar USA hockey rules are not used in college hockey. The NCAA, could never adopt someone elses rules, I'm sure they pay someone 50k a year to cut and paste rules from USA and European rulebooks.

http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/2004/200...ockey_rules.pdf c. When the puck is above the height of four feet [1.22m] it shall not be batted with the stick, and when it occurs there shall be a whistle unless: (1) The puck is batted to an opponent, in which case the play shall continue. When a player bats the puck to an opponent, an on-ice official shall give the washout signal immediately. Didn't realize College hockey switched to 4ft, it used to be the crossbar. I still think ZP made contact when his stick was below the X-bar. Not sure about 4 ft though. If the puck went off a Gopher the question is: Is batted to an opponent mean they get possession? I would think not this is what the rule says about a delayed penalty, where possession is required: Note:

Woog and Mazacko are morons. Looking at the replay ZP had his stick above the crossbar, but he swung down at the puck. You could clearly tell he hit the puck well below the crossbar. I wasn't looking to see if it hit a gopher player. From one angle it looked like ZP hit it too high, but from the other 3 they showed he clearly hit it below, Wooger and Mazacko ignored the other 3 replays and said it was a great call. That said the Gopher played well and probably deserved to win, and they had one waived off last night that should not have been. So I can't be too pissed off.

I'm not sure if I caught all of the interview, from what I heard: DB talked about missing the three players for the WJC - he made a point to say what a big deal winning this tourny means. He also said ZP said winning the gold at the WJ is a bigger deal than winning the NCAA. DB was asked about ZP leaving - he talked about how he enjoys having his brother and friends on the team. Then he mentioned how Senja was the WCHA's best player last year and cannot crack the lineup at St. Louis. DB also said there may not be an NHL next year, then went on to say the players are crybabies and the owners are whiners. He noted the NHL cannot pay what MLB, NBA, and NFL play because it is not as big a draw. About this weekends game, DB joked that their strategy is to take zero penalties with Minny's 30% PP. He noted the games should be a lot of skating, and UND holds the conditioning advantage - they scored half their goals in the 3rd this yr. PA or Dubay (I can't tell which is which) thanked DB for being on the show. He said "We really respect what you do up there, you are a class act" He complimented DB a few more times.

Does anyone else find it odd that they have been talking about this lockout for about a year, it is still 9 months away. Why don't they figure out their differences now, rather than waiting until the contract expires? Personally on one level I hope they do have a lockout, it will be better for college hockey, on the other hand there is no college hockey games on Sun-Thur most weeks. If there is a strike rather than a lockout this could be more devestating for the future of the NHL, people seem to be much more turned off with greedy players compared to greedy owners.

Anybody go to this last year? If I can talk the (sigh) wife into heading to Minny I would be game.

I should clarify that I don't watch that much MN high school hockey. I did play against Moorheads 95 team, this team is much better. My bias would be my cousin plays for them, but they are the real deal. From what I've heard Warroad is a very good team. This weekend Moorhead travels to Warroad, anyone living in that neck of the woods might want to check out that game, you can always tape the Sioux-Gopher game, or be like my Dad and bring along the walkman. Hopefully my cousin can continue to progress and play for the Sioux, then I can at least live vicariously through him. I believe Moorhead also plays Centennial later this year, it remains to be seen exactly how good they are.

An NHL strike/lockout will not stop the AHL,ECHL ect.. A big concern for the younger minor league players is that many of the older NHL players will take their jobs. Players are signing like crazy so they get paid in the event of a lockout. If there is no NHL I think it is pretty obvious Parise, Jones, Green and the lot are going to stay. Unless of course they decide to play in the Latvian Elite league

I think ZP is more 'media friendly'. He has great poise for a kid his age. Not many 19 year old college athletes interview as well as he does. That said, I think BB also interviews well. Let's face it though, the Hobey is basically a popularity contest. The UND higher-ups know this and also know ZP has a better shot at winning. For some reason the East coast preppy types seem to have a leg up. With all the SSM players, maybe Sioux players will start attracting the attention of the East coast snobbery.

Did not know that. That would explain why their websites are set up the same. The Star does suck, they should just call it the Peoples Republic Daily.

Um I think I read that article in the Pioneer link. Is cutting and pasting an article plagerism?

Vote Not sure if anyone posted this yet, but phase 2 voting is now up. BB, ZP, DS, BM, AS, and JP are all on it. What are Brandon's chances? The HB award is not based strictly on on-ice performance. My question is how much does his "playing US treasury" hurt his chances? Personally I don't think it should be a factor being that it happened before college and he has not been in trouble since. Unfortunately I see it as a reason for those voting not to choose him.

Anyone as long as it isn't the Gophers.....After Minnesota's 23 year drought they acted like that had won 9 of them after the national title game in St. Paul in 2002. Then to add to it they go back to back and now act like that have won 18.

Radio announcers made it sound like Hale had the worse of it. I believe Scott is the D-man that is built like an offensive lineman, 6-7 250 more or less. Anyone that big that is not playing in the NHL must not have much for talent. Sounds like he would be better served playing in the Northern Ontario goon league.

Gifford is a forward, not sure how big he is, I haven't had a chance to see him this year. I think your thinking of the defenseman Lee. I think Lee was the MVP of the under 18 tourny last summer. The only knock against Moorhead is their size up front. They don't have too many forwards over 6 ft. From a fairly reliable source, I've heard the first choice for many on the team would be the Gophers. From what I've seen the most talented forward on the team is Deutz, but he looks like he's about 5-8. Lee and another D-man, Ammermen?, are both very good.

Moorhead plays on Sat. night at 6 for anyone interested. With the exception of goaltending they are the most talented high school team I've ever seen. They have about 8 players that will play college hockey. 4 or 5 of those will probably be in a major D1 program. The only game they lost this year against Duluth East, they still outshot them about 3-1. DB has been at a few games, scouts from colleges, the ushl and even chl have been at all of there games. Note I did not go to Moorhead so I'm not that biased, they really are this good.

Finally an appropriate use of the one-liner. I'd like to take it a step further and say any quote from any professional wrestler, past or present, should be grounds for permanant removal from this board. Martin was one of the best players in college hockey last year, if not the best. Losing a player like that hurts your team. The loss of Martin does not account for all of the Gophers early trouble, but it played a large part. I have them finishing 3rd in the league.

UND requirements Not to call anybody a liar, but there has to be some misinformation. Currently the minimum ACT score is 17 and a 2.25 high school GPA. ACT Percentiles This site shows that a 17 is somewhere around the 30th percentile while a 22 is around the 65th percentile. This would mean UND would more than double their minimum requirement for ACT score. This will never happen, someone has some bad information.

I see, I didn't realize exactly what was going on. No offense to Bismark but this entire thing loses any shred of credibility by naming Bismark SI's ND "sportstown". I cannot see how they would not pick Fargo or GF. Personally I would pick GF, even though I'm from Fargo. You don't see people from GF flocking to Fargo for any sporting event, like people from Fargo do for Sioux hockey. Maybe I'm wrong. Do the Bismark Bobcats average 10,000 a game? How about Bismark state's football team? I'm not sure how popular curling is in the state. The curling rink in Fargo is not exactly a hotspot. Although anyone that has not curled shoud, it is a great sport. Any sport that has a bar within yards of the playing field has got to be somewhat interesting.

I second that. I find it very peculiar that Ed is going to be the 'voice of the Democrats'. Can you imagine listening to him and Rush back to back? No matter your political ideology you have to agree both are self-absorbed windbags. The state pen should take a look at pumping these idiots radio programs into solitary confinement, or would that count as cruel or unusual? Virgil Hill should be on any list describing the greatest atheletes from the state. This site has been up for a while, I believe DMT posted something about it a few months back. The Minnesota site is also interesting Minnesota Greatest although I would switch 2 and 4 no offense to Dave Winfield.
