agree with most of what your saying but any coach that still plays the trap can go to hell...and i heard bucci and the drunk mention the "trap' a little...but on the flip side if remember at one point all 5 gophers behind their own blue line pretty much saying ....try to score thru this wall!

It does make for a less entertaining game but when they goal is to win, you don't care what the fans think.

I'm saying there's a pattern here.  Of Motzko coached teams losing to teams that, on paper, they should beat.  One game does not make a pattern.

(Your stats above don't reflect that Quinnipiac played a weak schedule (#34th) compared to Minnesota (#2).  Pre-game, Minnesota was the favorite by many metrics.)

I do agree that QU is a very good team.

I wouldn't say there is a pattern, Motzko ran into a VERY VERY good team (and every metric stated it), that happens.

And of those "pre-game" metrics that were talked about by the analysts, how many games were actually watched by them? I sat and listened to a lot of those dweebs and I just shook my head at how uninformed they were on college hockey and the teams that were playing.

Monday morning thoughts, at the start of the off season:

Wondering if Bob Motzko is the right guy to win it at Minnesota.

He's great at recruiting talent, building and developing a strong roster.   And he's won a lot of regular season titles:  5 in the last 11 seasons, which is definitely elite in the coaching ranks.

But when the NCAA's roll around, his teams lose games they really shouldn't.   Two of those at St Cloud stand out.  2016 - Ferris State at the Xcel.  2018 - Air Force at Sioux Falls.  in 2021 and 2022 they lost to very good Mankato teams, but they barely put up a fight.  0-4 and 1-5 losses aren't good enough.  Not even close.

Maybe its in-game management.  Certainly, the Gophers changed their forecheck, leading 2-0 in the middle of the second period Saturday.  After creating loads of chances? Puzzling.

There's a pattern here, of losing NCAA playoff games, despite having better talent.

So you're saying Motzko shouldn't have lost this game? Motzko can only coach so much and then his players have to execute and the players couldn't clearly execute once Pecknolds 1-1-3 neutral zone forecheck settled in (2nd period). Quinnipiac was relentless after the first period (which was obviously their worst). They had more shots on net and limited Minnesota's and they also won the faceoff battle (not a single Minnesota player was in double digit wins in the circle).

Also, lets look at the stats and give credit to Quinnipiac before criticizing Minnesota. Yes, Minnesota was ranked higher and had more recognition than Quinnipiac throughout the season but dive into the stats and you will see that Quinnipiac was a much better team overall.

    Faceoff win % - Quinnipiac #2 Minnesota #15

    PK % - Quinnipiac #4 Minnesota #12

    PP % - Quinnipiac #15 Minnesota #4

    Scoring Defense - Quinnipiac #1 Minnesota #6

    Scoring Margin - Quinnipiac #1 Minnesota #2

Scoring Offense - Quinnipiac #3 Minnesota #2 (they are awfully close in this category though)

    Win % - Quinnipiac #1 Minnesota #3

Goalies - Quinnipiac (Perets) Winning %, GAA, Save % - #1/#2 in all those categories Minnesota (Close) #3/#4 in all those categories.

This loss isn't on Motzko whatsoever, this was just a very good Bobcats team.

Map shows Johnson Memorial Drive.  Isn't there a guy on USCHO named Johnson Jerseys?  I'd give it greater than 50% odds that poster is selling these knock offs.  100% speculation.

JohnsonsJerseys is not selling knock-offs. I know the guy (actual last name is Johnson, hence the name JohnsonsJerseys) and he only deals with game worn jerseys.

Dane turned down an NHL assistant coaching job (Flyers via Hak) to stay at UND. I think this was more of a family/young kids decision at the time to stay in GF as well as job stability. Maybe things have changed now years later? Better timing? He’s definitely deserving of a HC opportunity and I think his names been in the hat quite a few times over the past several years. Honest question; would he be taking a pay cut to be HC at kato?

Mankato paid Hastings very well, as they knew if they wanted to be a serious hockey program they were going to have to pay. I think it would be more of a lateral move pay wise for him to go from UND to Mankato.

He'll have his work cut out for him for sure.
He's no longer the Big Fish in the little WCHA pond...he's now the Little Fish in the big B10 pond...at a school that could care less about hockey.
It'll be interesting to see how long he takes to turn UW into a contender again.

Now that Barry Alvarez is no longer the AD, I doubt it will take him long to turn that program around. They see the success that Penn State, Minnesota and Michigan have going on in hockey and they won't stand for it.

I know in this small market he has to maintain a relationship with coaches but a little probing that might offer some insight into what is happening in our program would be great and probably calm down this board if we can understand what went wrong and how it is being addressed.  All coaches use "coachspeak" but Berry is a master of it leading to the "culture" comments on this board because that is basically all we get out of him.  A little info that coaches have a plan to change things would be great - When we speculate on this board we often assume the worst and many are worried that we are on the road to being in a group that includes Wisconsin.

Small market or not, Berry still needs to respect (and I am sure he does) all the questions Brad would ask.

I partially agree with the exception of Constantini.  From what I watched he brought some speed up front and I feel that we needed some of that last year.  I'm guessing there are a few variables that led to him leaving UND.  He might have been asked/told but I have a hard time believing the coaches wanted him to leave. Its not like there's a big traffic jam in the forward group and even if there was, Constantini wouldn't be on my list of players to move on from.  That's a subjective opinion from a fan that doesn't know what's going on behind the scenes.

That's an honest take and actually I would agree with it.
No one really knows what is going on behind the scenes, but what we do know is that this team underperformed BIG TIME this year and some changes were/are being made.

But those leaving  were all "great" in '21-'22 on this forum and UND had the "best d-core in the country" for '22-'23.

Would really enjoy our favorite hockey beat writer to ask the really hard questions as to why the man in charge thinks there has been such turnover.

Yes, they could've been great but they also could've regressed in their development. It's no different than a 1st round pick getting his deal and then never even making it passed the AHL and moving onto foreign leagues.

I am just saying that the portal can work in both parties' interests. We all know that Berry isn't going to let his assistants go so why not let the player leave that isn't able to do what they are coaching.

You are correct in the fact that our "favorite" beat writer should be asking harder questions, instead of giving us a some lame duck article on who is all in the transfer portal and how it's an anomaly.

  10. There is a lot to read, and I honestly do not want to go back and read it all, so if this has been covered, I apologize.
What if most of these players that are entering the transfer portal have been told by the staff that they should enter it? Let's be honest most of these players that are entering it didn't play or were not overly exciting as players and Berry think's that they aren't going to get better. The portal has been a detriment to college sports, but it also is a good way to clean house from players that aren't cutting it anymore.

I want Fenton to add lacrosse

75 schools that have D1 men's lacrosse and all of them are pretty much out East. You thought women's hockey was expensive, lacrosse at UND would more than likely have a huge cost just on travel alone.

I would highly disagree. I think their post that had thousands of likes and shares immediately following their regional win, a massive moment in their season, coupled with the intensity in the crowd and banter online during our series' disagrees, as well. Your opinion, however.

anyone can retweet anything they want without thinking about it. The fact remains that ever since the Gophers went to the B10 any rivalry that was had with WCHA schools is no longer. If you and I were sitting at Willy McCoy's (enjoying 2-1 in Bloomington) watching the UND/Gopher game this past season, you could honestly tell me the players for the Gophers like you would've back in the day when Riddle, Potulny, Vanek, Tallackson, Guyer, Brigs, Martin Vannelli, Peltier Wheeler, Stoa, Chucko, Pohl, Anderson, Hirsch, Frazee?

The word your looking for is Eades....   passion on a downhill slide since he left.

This was not Cheer's and everyone saying goodbye at the end of the night to Norm (aka Eades), he made his own bed and was let go by Hak.

I'd argue a slight difference between fan actions and the official team account making the comment.
Guessing Motzko wasn't the one to endorse that idea, especially given him and Berry's relationship.

I'd be willing to bet that the intern who wrote that will probably be retracting that tweet...

We're each other's biggest rival. It's 2023. If you didn't see this coming, you haven't been following along. Next time we win a regional in Minnesota, especially if Minny isn't involved, remember this tweet. I guarantee it'll come back around.

It's a silly jab at a massive rival and frankly, if the program needs this as any additional motivation, that would just be stupid.

I would say that we haven't been rivals since we went our different ways years ago. I remember watching the Sioux/Gopher games back in the WCHA and you knew who played for the UofM but nowadays, I am willing to bet majority of us UND fans couldn't name more than 3 players on the team.

As compared to North Dakota fans busting out the Holy Cross jerseys and chants whenever they play Minnesota…it’s been 17 years, we can stop with that now, right?

Or how about the one's that are complaining about the pairwise and wanting to get rid of auto-bids because UND wasn't in the tournament...

Since college hockey is such a niche sport, NIL ought to have less impact, though a larger media market like Mpls-Stp that is hockey-centric certainly should have a big advantage over UND or even DU, simply from a marketing standpoint.

And don't try to say I'm wrong.   A girl gets tired of being wrong all the time.

They certainly should have a larger media market to utilize but when majority of the metro does not give two craps about UofM hockey (and it shows due to fans not going to games), who's going to know these hockey players that are promoting products?

The businesses in Grand Forks should be lining up an NIL program for UND's athlete's (be it hockey, BBall, Football). The athletes in Grand Forks are the closest thing to professionals Grand Forks will ever see on a regular basis and businesses like Hugo's, Rydell's, Italian Moon, Grand Auto Mart, Wahlen's, North Dakota Eye Clinic, Scheel's, etc.. should be wanting to utilize these athletes. UND cannot afford to sit back on this and not utilize this NIL to further our programs.

I think St. Thomas will be more committed to winning than Miami is. The Redhawks haven't been good at anything for quite awhile now. The 2009 Runner-Up finish is a distant memory.

You are correct, Miami has regressed ever since that runner-up finish and it doesn’t seem like the school cares.
