  1. No, it's a question. What university in this region should UND be more like? NDSU? SDSU? USD? Minnesota? SCSU? Iowa? Wisconsin? Because the NCAA thinks they're all just fine for Native Americans, given the animal nicknames of their sports teams. And that's really what's most important in your world, isn't it? That's not the point. The point is that whenver UND's use of the Sioux nickanme and logo is discussed, suddenly the land taken from the Indians in the Dakotas is relevant. But in Minnesota, it's not relevant. Why? They've got Goldie Gopher for a mascot, and that enables them to sweep their state's history with Indians under the rug. When UND has a nice, noncontroversial name that makes the high-paid NCAA bureaucrats sitting in their plush offices in Indianapolis, Indiana, happy, it can begin the process of becoming equal. When all the universities I mentioned above come anywhere near doing what UND does for American Indians, then it will be a start.
  2. So all Indians must share your opinions or they're not real? Are you saying that enrolled Indians have the exact same opinions? And they just happen to be the same as yours? No, that's not what I think he is saying. I believe he was trying to explain how special the Sioux name and logo are to UND's athletes. You don't have to be an athlete to understand that, but it probably helps. Some of us understand his point. You don't and probably never will. Of course it counts. Nobody said it didn't. But does being Sioux make your opinion count 10 times more than anyone else's? Does it imbue you with special rights that the rest of us don't have? Why do you think that only your opinion counts? Nobody is trying to tell you that you shouldn't do any of those things. You should. Yes you are. Maybe if you repeat it about a thousand more times, we'll finally get it. You're right. The Sioux warrior and warrior spirit are things of the past. It's just like the Vikings and their warrior spirit. Things of the past. You'll get respect when you earn it. Changing the name and logo doesn't earn you an ounce of respect. Plain and simple.
  3. From the Minnesota Daily: UND still waving the flag of bigotry The University of North Dakota needs to drop its racist nickname and logos.
  4. Just for the fun of it? Tom Dempsey.
  5. I think it's like Dale Lennon said on last night's Fighting Sioux coaches' show. In nearly every game, you can point to a few big plays that made the difference in the game. He thought two of the biggest against SCSU were the Glas field goal just before half-time and Grossman's long TD reception to start the second half. Lennon said that what separates this team from some in the recent past is that it's been making several big plays every game.

  9. My point was that alcohol consumption played little, if any, part in the original Springfest. I know because I took my kids to it when they were in grade school.
  10. Actually, Springfest will be going back to the tradition, which started as a day of music and dancing in the park. The "tradition" of it being a huge public drunkfest in University Park didn't start until around 1998.

    Latest Big Sky news

Most journalists would have correctly stated "just doesn't jibe." But maybe this is Hallstrom's subliminal way of telling Bison fans that the Big Sky Conference has no interest in NDSU as a dance partner.
  12. From today's Grand Forks Herald: COLLEGE ATHLETICS: UND hasn't filed nickname appeal Next appeal won't be much different from first; best chance for NCAA reversal will come from Council of Presidents
  13. Don't forget Matt Jones from last season. He could have left early, too.
  14. I see that Parise scored his power play goal while our good buddy from Boston College, Brooks Orpik, was in the box. Some might remember Orpik gooning it up in the 2000 Frozen Four championship game and then nearly taking Ryan Bayda's head off during the 2001 national championship game in Albany. Poetic justice.
  15. Then why don't ALL Natives agree with you? Why don't even MOST Natives agree with you?
  16. From MSNBC: NCAA ruling expected soon on Bradley nickname appeal Again I ask: Over four years, exactly how much did the NCAA actually research this issue? It's going to be very interesting to see which schools get off an which don't.
  17. Thank you for your very well-spoken comments.
  18. I found that rather baffling, too.

  23. I wasn't at the game, but I watched it on TV and listened to the radio broadcast. I thought the biggest difference in the game was the ability of UND's defense to stop Birkel. When the Huskies really needed him in the second half, he was almost a non-factor. In contrast, UND's running game began to click when the Sioux needed it most. Another key difference was that Bellmore played much better than Kaczor. The two long TDs to Grossman in the second half really blew the game open for UND. I was impressed with St. Cloud's defense and special teams. I didn't expect Bellmore to be sacked so many times. And the Huskies really held Dressler in check, something no other team has been able to do. I think the game was closer than the final score indicated.

    Stanford AD

Besides, why come to UND and get caught up in the Sioux name controversy when you can stay at Stanford with your perfectly safe, but somewhat bizarre, tree mascot?
