From The Gateway (UNO): NCAA decision on the Fighting Sioux could affect UNO, NCC

<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Isn't that like appealing a speeding ticket to the officer who issued you the ticket?

I learn something new every day. I stumbled across this extremely interesting Oct. 3 Washington Post article in which a respected Algonquian language expert disputes the meaning and origin of the term "redskin." Perhaps this explains why the vast majority of American Indians surveyed in a recent poll didn't consider the term "redskin" offensive. This is the same Ives Goddard who was quoted in a Feb. 18, 1999, letter to the editor by Larry Stammen, UND Alumni Association, published in the Grand Forks Herald:

Dave Hendrickson, USCHO's Hockey East correspondent, has a good preview of Northeastern here. Hendrickson picks the Huskies to finish 9th in the 10-member league. They have a new coach and a lot of inexperience at the blue line. Plus, none of Northeastern's goalies have seen much playing time the past two years. Their greatest threat offensively is senior Mike Morris who had 19 goals and 20 assists last season and was a second-team All-Hockey East selection. Actually, Sweeny said said Groeschl could play at UMD and Lennon corrected him, saying that he was still questionable.

Another classic post by Sioux-cia.

I have a Brian Leetch collectible figure that has a reasonable facsimile of Leetch's face. I don't expect an exact likeness, but the face on that eBay figure looks like someone quite a bit older than Parise.

Keeping in mind that I am no lawyer, there are two parts of Sunday's Grand Forks Herald this story that stand out to me.
-
I'm sure the "so-called" Indians don't bother going to the protest marches, either.
-
Nice, but the face doesn't look anything like him.
-
If you're implying that I wrote that letter, I didn't.
-
I agree. This is the second Sunday in a row that the Herald has run what I consider a very unbalanced story about the Sioux name issue because it only tells one side. One of the law professors is from Marquette, a university that changed its name from Warriors. How objective is he on this issue? Every court case is different, and I think it's a mistake to assume that this one will be like others in which the NCAA has been involved. Maybe it will and maybe it won't. I don't know. But I doubt that UND would be discussing legal action with the state if it was a complete waste of time. I agree with that, too. But there has to be a willingness to cooperate and compromise on both sides. I have no doubt that UND is willing. Is the other side? I have my doubts.

From the Grand Forks Herald: COLLEGE NICKNAMES: Courting disaster UND's not likely to win a nickname battle with NCAA in court, sports law experts say

Dayton Daily News:

From the Associated Press: Congressional delegation supports Fighting Sioux nickname Three days late, the AP comes through with a severely shortened version of the Herald's Tuesday story.

Okay. We can't legally use that name. That's what I thought.
-
Then what does this mean?
-
I like the idea, but I'll bet that name has been copyrighted.

Did Jordan Parise accelerate his studies and become a senior?

You mean they aren't? I wasn't trying to start an anti-Gopher flame fest. I just thought the final score was interesting. I have no idea how much better Alberta is in comparison to Manitoba. Maybe it's a much better team. Anyone know?

While I understand completely your frustration with the spin put on UND athletics by Fargo sports writers, the difference here is that the article you cited is a news story, not an opinion piece. News is supposed to be factual and objective. Editorials, columns and opinion pieces should be based on facts, but in them, writers are allowed to express their point of view.

He's not expressing the opinions of your people. He's expressing his opinion. And I happen to know from personal experience that not all of your people agree with with you on the Sioux name issue, and I'm talking about enrolled tribal members who no doubt look just as Indian as you do. Let me get this straight: Because not all the INMED medical students looked as Indian as you thought they should and not all of them planned to spend their lives the way you thought they should, you decided not to become a doctor and not to serve your people on the reservation? Does this really make sense to you?

Second chances = Brandon Bochenski

It looks like the Gophers had a bit of trouble with some Canucks in their opening exhibition. The shots on goal show that the Gophers pretty much dominated offensively, but the goaltending looks less than stellar. Alberta had three goals on 24 shots.
