  1. One word: Belarus.
  2. From the Grand Forks Herald: COLLEGE NICKNAMES: A lack of support UND fails to receive nickname endorsement by tribes, while many other colleges succeed This is a good story about what FSU, CMU and Utah do to work with the tribes in their states. The only problem I have with the story is that it appears to assume that UND does nothing similar to those schools, and I'm fairly certain that's not the case. In addition, while ongong communciation is great, it's also a two-way street. Both sides must be willing to engage in it. OUR OPINION: NCAA should hold hearings in North Dakota OUR VIEW: UND deserves a chance to make its case in person, and the NCAA should visit N.D. to hear all sides. The Herald should be commended for this idea because it's a good one. However, given the NCAA's practice of considering only information it agress with while ignoring information that tends to support UND's case, I'm somewhat skeptical that it would open any eyes on the organization's executive committee. It is worth a try, however. Along the same lines, perhaps it would be more helpful for UND to first invite all the tribal council members to the university to let them see firsthand what goes on here. That might be a more useful exercise than bringing in the NCAA.
  3. Wasn't it during the 2000-2001 seasn that Manitoba took UND into OT where the Sioux eventually won? If I recall correctly, that was against a UND team that made it into the Frozen Four championship.
  4. From the Richmond Times-Dispatch: NCAA takes proper stance in school nickname brouhaha Here's the response I sent to Mr. Woody (a name I find offensive, by the way) and to the newspaper as a letter to the editor.

  6. That's what happens when you don't hang around the fort enough.
  7. Sorry, but I don't agree with your moral equivalent standard that GK's points are just as good as Sioux-cia's. They're not.
  8. Crap! I knew I forgot something!
  9. GrahamKracker: Perpetually stuck in "I don't get it" mode. And as someone once said, that's no way to go through life.

    Is this it?
  11. I should mention that I did sumbit a revised version of my orginal post to USA Today. I've heard nothing from them, however.
  12. You never let us forget how predictable you are.
  13. Sioux fans couldn't handle having a goalie that big.
  14. I have a suggestion. How about we all ease off on criticism of the new guy until he has some time to get some experience? I heard him during the tryouts at Suite 49 and he was darn good. But he probably won't be Scott Hennen right out of the gate. I don't think most people realize what a tough job it is. Scott made it look easy, but it's not.
  15. It's this kind of garbage that totally demolishes what little respect I had for your point of view. If UND was racist, it wouldn't have more American Indians students than any other university in the region. If UND was racist it wouldn't offer all the educational opportunities it does for American Indians. If UND was racist, it wouldn't have so many programs and services to support its American Indian students. If UND was racist, it wouldn't be building American Indian Student Services a brand new facility in a prime location on campus. If UND was racist, it wouldn't put into writing its strategic goal of becoming the best university in the nation for Native American programs. If UND was racist, it wouldn't be creating new programs specifically aimed at attracting American Indian students. If UND was as racist as you and others claim, you'd have no trouble proving it to the Department of Justice. But you can't. And finally, if the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo had anything whatsoever to do with racism at UND, its American Indian enrollment wouldn't have increased nearly 30 percent since the new logo was implemented and the Engelstad Arena opened four years ago. Your comparison of people fighting to maintain the tradition of the Fighting Sioux nickname at UND to the slave owners of the pre-Civil War South would be laugh-out-loud silly if it wasn't so pathetically ignorant. So congratulations. You got me fired up once again and made me more determined than ever to fight this battle to the end.
  16. Good response, dagies. I hope more people write to challenge the newspaper's twisted logic.
  17. Or he just loves barren Grand Forks.
  18. And we know which wolf they're feeding.
  19. You should see how much trouble I get into on the USCHO forums when I point out that there are actually a lot of trees in Grand Forks and provide photographic evidence to back it up. (Outside of Grand Forks is another matter entirely. ) You'd think that I'd committed blasphemy for challenging people's misconceptions.
  20. I can't wait to see how some people spin this.
  21. This is what I e-mailed to the Pioneer Press:
  22. Here's a link to the editorial in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. I agree with Sioux Hockey Fanatic. This is a piece of garbage based on rumor, misinformation and wishful thinking. Whoever wrote it obviously isn't aware of the NCAA's ruling that the 2006 west region tournament would be held at the Ralph without the requirment to cover the Sioux references. If the NCAA knows that it can't violate its standing contract to force UND to cover the logos, it certainly knows that it would be hit with an immediate lawsuit if it tried to move the tournament. But I suppose the Pioneer Press would say that because this is an "opinion piece," it doesn't have to be factual.
