  1. Here is the recruiting advantage:

    • when we were DII SU had more money to give out so got more of the kids they wanted - I know for sure one high profile player that would have gone to UND if he could  have gotten the same $$ from us
    • when we transitioning SU had the advantage of offering something to play for (playoffs) when we couldn't do that - I know of another very good player who made the choice to go to SU over UND for that reason
    • SU's recent success gives them an advantage currently

It will take us time to overcome that but we are making strides and will eventually do that like we did by the end of our DII days when we were beating them on the field about 75% of the time.

  2. Do you guys think UM is the only FBS school that recruits Minnesota or something ? Every Big 10 school recruits Minnesota. If UM missed out on guys like Billy Turner, so did Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State etc.

A lot of these guys that went to NDSU and went on to play in the NFL were not even close to the same quality player their senior year as freshman. NDSU does a better job of developing players than perhaps any college program in the nation. Who knows. Billy Turner could have went to Minnesota, sat behind more talented players, never developed under coach Kramer and Fuchs, started his senior year and been half the player he was at Minnesota as he was at NDSU.

Someone mentioned Paul Cornick. Paul was a walk on at NDSU for christ sakes. NDSU could have even missed out by not offering a scholarship. Again, clearly he was not Big 10 talent coming into his freshman year. NDSU developed him into an NFL player.

Only guy on this run that was a Big 10 player out of high school was Crockett. He had every Big 10 school after him, but his grades were atrocious due to being homeless.

Up until these last few years, I never saw NDSU winning recruiting battles over quality FBS teams. Last year, QB recruit picked NDSU over a full ride at Rutgers. This year it appears Ben Ellefson is staying at NDSU rather than going to Purdue. They have been getting better at recruiting, not worse. When it comes to ND, these young kids are growing up watching NDSU on Saturdays, watching NDSU on ESPN etc. NDSU will dominate recruiting in ND and western Minnesota for years to come.

I remember hearing about Turner as a senior in HS and there was talk in Twin Cities media that they were shocked that Brewster wasn't recruiting him.  He was a 2 star in Rivals and Brewster was too busy looking for 4 stars out of Florida that flunked out of school after a year or two.

Not many other Big Ten schools recruit MN very hard except for the top 5-10 kids that everybody wants.  They aren't coming to MN for 2 star recruits but you would expect the local Big Ten school to have some insight which Brewster did not.

  3. Honestly there weren't that many FBS quality MN guys in those classes. Just a couple game changers.

They listed Zach Vraa, Billy Turner, Marcus Williams to start with.  Two of them are starting in the NFL I believe.

I also found Paul Cornick with the Broncos and from Orono HS..

I am guessing they were all FBS quality.

  4. One could argue that the exposure is drawing attention of opposing coaching staffs. Those staffs aren't fools: they'll start fishing in the same ponds (see: J Kill).

On Pat Reusse's show last week he had a college football guy on (don't know who it was) and they talked about NDSUs success.  Very complimentary but spent some time talking about what might have happened if Kill was at UM two years earlier.  They figured he would have gotten many of the top talented players that SU got during Brewster's time.

I know that has been discussed here regarding the past and looking forward and generally dismissed by SU faithful as sour grapes.  It was interesting to hear it from two guys with no allegiance either way and particularly from Reusse who has been very positive about SUs  on the air and in the paper.

  5. Nope, looked like she jammed it somehow making a move. No contact at all. But Shepard and chi. would have called a major.

That is correct on the injury.   I watched it a bunch of times with Tivo and nobody touched her.  It was her right leg and the defender was on her left anyway.  Just a normal basketball play.   Tough break for her and her team moving forward.

  6. Banham is an amazing player and a stone cold killer at the end of games. I was at their game on Sunday and she started hitting 3s late when they were down including a step back 3 to tie with 5 seconds left. I think she will be a WNBA player

Wagner has fallen out of favor lately for the Gophs. She only played about 10 minutes on Sunday

  7. While I agree that those ladies "can" hit a 3, no one has proven they can consistently do so.  We have made 27 this year compared to the opponents' 57.  While we won on Saturday, that could easily been one of those "when necessary" situations.  We were 0 for 7 while SU made 9.  I am not saying we should become a team that relies on the 3, we just need to be able for it to be more of a threat.  That would help open up the inside so we can better take advantage of our strength.

I was at the Gopher women's game last night against Butler.  UM played zone almost exclusively.  We will need to hit some 3's to stay in it with them.  Butler hit a bunch of 3's and could have easily won the game.

  8. As I said, I'm ecstatic to get a road win, and against a Missouri Valley team to boot makes it even better.  But just perusing the box score, I see the team shot just 56% on free throws.  Am I the only one that thinks that is ridiculous for a Division I college basketball team to barely make half of its free throws?

You are not along in that belief.

  9. I don't know what is right either.  I did hear from one of my former teammates that had some limited experience in the CFL that he was surprised that Baukol has them all doing the same workout.   That isn't the way they did it with the team he was with.  He asked Baukol about that and Baukol barked at him and said that there is no difference and all players should do the same workout.   He backed off and didn't question any further.

  10. I guess I will put it in terms even gfhockey will understand. There is a greater chance he will quit drinking before Mollberg transfers.

Glad I wasn't at Judy's when someone spouted that nonsense. The kid came here with the idea he wanted to be part of turning this program around. He will still do that if he can heal from his surgery. He hung in there along with Bartels taking some pretty good shots and never threw his linemen under the bus. Bartels did the same til he got hurt. These guys have enough to worry about than the drivel from people who can't hold their liquor without making fools of themselves.

Great to hear.  I'm a big Joe fan.

  11. I don't have a very good source on this but word on the street and I heard this in a bar that Molberg will probably be transferring out. Don't shoot the messenger just what I overheard while being a fly on the wall.

    I hope this isn't true.
