  1. How did this work out for you....?

We must be mind readers cause I was thinking the exact same thing. Even if he had lost, he's beaten Iowa and Iowa St. the last 3 years. They'll talk to Jake.

By the way, Northern Iowa will be in the game with Kansas today. The word throttled won't come up.

Summitforever guy makes 11 posts here and number 11 is a real stinker. Wanna put down ex-Sioux, #12 better improve!!

  2. Jake sure didn't hurt his chances for moving up the coaching ladder yesterday.

Now there are rumblings that Tubby Smith could be moving on to Auburn. So...how about Ben Jacobson to Minnesota?

Would hate to see the Gophs lose Tubby but Jake might be a very interesting hire.

  3. Heck, there are people calling for Mac's head in Ames after a 4-12 Big 12 record and a losing season overall so I doubt he would be seriously considered for the Iowa job. That being said, I am sure the Mac will get that program turned around!

Totally agree. If Wesley Johnson had stayed, how good would he have been this year? The tough part of ball at that level; you're one or two kids away from being really good or really bad. Mac has time at Iowa St. He'll get it fixed.

  4. McDermott probably a candidate as well.

Based on Mac's last couple years, I don't think Iowa would consider him. I also think its like going from UND to NDSU. Don't think Mac would put his name in knowing the number of people in Ames who would be upset if they Mac was looking at the "other" University.

  5. Jacobson would be stupid to leave UNI for the U of I. I think Ben could go to a better school then Iowa as a coach.

This is an easy move for Ben. He recruits the same area, has a chance on better players, gets at least what Mac got at Iowa St. ($750,000/year) plus bonus money for tourney appearances, and goes to a great conference. No way he stays at N. Iowa if Iowa comes calling.

  6. hey guys, Tim Miles was told about ndsu going D1 when he was hired. Craig Smith (mayville) was another guy that und should've hired instead of brian jones. But now with craig at CSU, he wont be returning to und anytime soon, especially with miles & saul's influence on him.

Now, my bigger question is this, the Summit league president and higher up's don't want UND in the conference due to the nickname mess, but the bigger problem is the und fanbase ripping on the summit for the past 4-5 years saying its a miserable conference, et al.

So I guess Im wondering what the REAL UND BBALL fanbase wants??

I don't know that people have really "ripped" on the conference; its more about ripping NDSU and if they're in the conference, then it must be bad. Whatever conference UND gets in it will be a 1 team conference when it comes to the NCAA tourney, that can't be denied. Personally a conference with NDSU, UND, SDSU, and USD is about the best we can hope for if we ever want people in the seats again in GF. The old rivalries are still the best we can hope for.

  7. I call B.S. on that. If the position paid decently, coaches would apply for this job because we are half-way through the transition. As far as non-conference schedule, it's actually pretty good - have no idea where you're coming on that. BCS-type schools aren't going to come here no matter what our status. The conference issue will be settled within eight months.

The main issue is that we don't pay worth s*** for a DI BB coach, and especially the assistants.

I'll take back the scheduling part of what I said but I stand by the coach and player part. We need a league to show kids who and where we will play. A coach needs to know who he's playing to know the type of kid he needs to recruit. If you are in the MVC, you need some big corn-fed posts. The summit is more perimeter oriented. What we're doing right now is just recruiting to fill the roster and thats why we really don't have an identity as a bball team.

  8. I've been fairly vocal about how I've felt about this year's bball team from the beginning of the season after I went to my first game this year and saw the product on the court. My feelings haven't changed, and have actually been amplified. Personally, I'm a huge basketball fan. I love the sport, but watching what our men's team did to basketball this past year was just painful. You're right, it's not the players fault that they were brought together and given the same color jerseys to play basketball together this year. That lies strictly on the coaching staff. Jones needs to go, and if Faison decides that the altercation at the end of the GWC tourney is a good scapegoat to can him I wouldn't blame him. I do not know coach Jones personally but from what I have heard he is a fairly good guy and I do think that it's fair to ridicule him strictly from a professional stance and not make any comments about him as a human being. His body of work at UND has been awful. The current team shows no promise for the future. I hate to say it but unless we get either amazing freshmen coming in or some solid JUCO transfers we are going to be horrible for a long long time. The players on the court for UND are not even the best basketball players walking around the UND campus........do a little research on Dominique Bennett from the football team and you will see what I mean, we have the Texas 5A state tournament MVP walking around our campus and not playing basketball for us.......I'm not saying that's anyone's fault but the point is that our other sports have shown the ability to bring in some decent athletes and well.........I didn't see a single ATHLETE on the court for UND this year for basketball. The lowpoint of the season for me was when I was watching one of the games on TV and Mertens got a dunk and Jody Norstadt made a comment that we had 2 dunks in 1 game. If that accomplishment is noteworthy for a men's college basketball team then not much else needs to be said about the current state of your team. We need a fresh start and fresh faces if there is any hope of retaining any type of fan base. I don't blame the people who don't want to renew their season tickets, something does need to be done and it needs to be done now before this gets much worse if that's even possible. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that something will be fixed soon. I mean Faison did come from NMSU and they have a very respectable program down there so he has to know something about having a successful bball program.

Don't disagree with anything you are saying but...................until we are in a legit conference, no one of any stature will touch this job. Until we are in a legit conference, we can't schedule anyone of any legitimacy either. No one wants this job, no one wants to play us, and no one wants to play here until we are in a conference.

  9. Aren't you being a negative nelly Coach Daddy, Sorry to tell you this but even though this may be the worst confence in D1, I'm glad that we are out of D2, I now realize how bad that brand of basketball really was. It was terrible, and we were the best of terrible. These players have done a good job, and had they been juniors & seniors when we were still in the NCC, we would stomped everyone with these players too (some of them played as underclassmen) I honestly don't think any of our previous teams from years ago would have had anymore success than this current team now, in this situation. Because of that, I say way to go ladies! You've worked your tails off and were able to accomplish the only goal that was realistically available, and you did it emphatically. I'm not going to diminish what these players have done and sacrificed. I'm just going to congratulate them and move on. I want into a different conference in the worst way but I'm proud of these girls just as I was of our first national title team.

I apologize for the negativism; just the mood I'm in that day. However, you can NOT compare this team to the team that won 3 National Titles. That team would have beat this team by 50. Think of the Crouse's, Winger's, Richards, Pudenz', etc. and compare them to the talent we have now!!! Seriously, not even close.

Go back to the early 90's with Kleinsasser, Pudenz, Walters, Smirl, Deutsch, etc. Those teams would have hammered this bunch also. Again, not close.

I'm proud of how this group with 8 players has persevered and played on through all they've put up with. After the home loss to USD it would have been easy to pack it in and play out the string but they didn't. That's a tribute to the girls, the coaches, and everyone associated with the team. That being said, this is an average team compared to what we've had in the past. No one can argue that.

  10. Just curious what your reasoning is considering Sioux would be both reg. season and conf. champions of a d-1 conference, and would have completed a winning streak of 10+ games?

My reasoning is that we aren't any good. We're 10-1 in easily the worst conference in DI women's bball. A 10 game win streak in this league is nothing to brag about. Get the conf. tourney over, find players, and get us in a conference with some teams that are decent so we can have some rivalry's again. This season will NOT end.

  11. I don't think UND women's BB gets the attention, or respect, it deserves. What they've done with only EIGHT players this year is extraordinary. Any chance of getting an NIT bid if they win out and cruise through the conference tournament?

    NO

  12. When I looked at the schedule back when the season started, I can honestly say these 2 games this week didn't really get me all that excited. But now, these home games this week with NJIT on Thursday and Chicago St Saturday could go along way to getting us to a regular season conference crown. Even if it is the Great West, that gets me jacked up. I like titles at anytime, so basically what I'm sayin is I'm ready to go this week. Let's own the Betty fans, and let's go ladies...take care of business.

It is fun to see some energy regarding UND bball. Sorry I can't share the enthusiasm. This league is awful, we aren't very good but we're good enough to beat this bunch of no talent teams.

Season needs to be done and we need to start working to find a league and get some sense of normalcy back in UND bball.

  13. I will say it again next year will be a huge change. Mitchell will be a junior with Benter and Clausen seniors. Joined by a full years experience of Hagen, Goodman,Archer, Allard and Wilmer. Joined by this years red shirt Schuler and Brekke. A true point guard and a very athletic 6'5 recruit. I see a 500 record next year and then only better things in the years to come. Give it time.

Someone bookmark this spot right here. How you have seen anything from Benter to believe he'll be a good senior I don't understand. For anyone to think Brekke will make anymore plays next year than this years group of redshirt's is not realistic. I'll give you Mitchell as a good player but beyond that, I don't see anything that makes this team better 10 wins at best next year.

  14. I saw one player who fits that description last night. Unfortunately, he plays for USD and his name is Jake Thomas. And he's a true freshman.

Good one. Hope no one gets offended by that. :(

  15. The thing is players DO read these if you read the article on Matt Frattin from the hockey team he says that when he wasnt playing for the team he was follwing the game threads on siouxsports.com

IF there are players reading this message board, and IF they are a part of a 3-16 bball team, and IF they haven't figured out that they aren't very good, well, then there isn't much left to say.

You will always find 1 or 2 players with good numbers on any team you follow. That doesn't mean there is enough talent for this team to compete at the DI level. Seriously, you can pull for them all you want and be a loyal fan, but how can you watch this team and say in 2 years they'll be better based on what you've watched? Who in the freshman class has stepped up, opened our eyes and made us say, "Wow, we got a steal in that kid!"

If the truth hurts, ask yourself if you know the truth or if you're just blindly following the program. Nothing said on here, as near as I can tell, has been untrue regarding their play or their abilities.

  16. 82-64 Final. Maybe fill the Betty on a consistent basis first before trying this. 1,500 in a half-full barn = much better than 1,500 in a 1/8th full barn. Hopefully no football recruits there unless Kiffin's "hostesses" were there. Sorry, but frustrating. If a conference bid were in hand this guy would get his walking papers.

Can't sugarcoat this one, its a bad team and they got it handed to them in a big way!!! There is little or no talent on this team; certainly not DI talent. You're right though, no sense firing him now. Wait til we find a conference then go get someone that can see what DI talent looks like. Here's a hint though, it doesn't come from Pembina, Greenbush, Warroad, or any other town within 100 miles of GF.

  17. It does. But it probably also is worth mentioning that despite having one of our worst teams of the Roebuck era, only two Summit teams have a higher RPI right now.

Well, then the Summit conference sucks too!!

I say we try and get into the WAC or Big Sky. Go west and find games. The Midwest is boring, lets go where the mtns. are. That way, even if we continue to suck, we'll play in beautiful places!! ;)

  18. If the Sioux can stay healthy (knock on wood), things are looking pretty promising for the rest of the season based upon the current RPI's of Great West teams:

    188 UND

    209 USD

    255 Texas-Pan American

    271 NJIT

    286 Chicago St.

    328 Houston Baptist

    335 Utah Valley

Particularly considering all the travel UND had this week and the extreme lack of depth, I'd say winning on the road against the second-best team in the conference (on paper) is a pretty good accomplishment.

I'd say this conference sucks!!!! ;)

  19. My point was score comparisions are pointless. It was a good win but saying they are better than the Bison because of it is wrong. Until they play, we won't know who is the better team. I'm sure that will be soon.

By the way, your first D1 win was last year @UMKC wasn't it?

You fell right into the trap. What a dope!!! You come over here trolling around, someone throws out the "score comparison=whose better" line and you swallow the hook you bit so hard.

Gotta admit, guys like you keep this site entertaining even when our bball team doesn't. What a clown!!!! :D

  20. Just for the record...

    Notable* year 1 wins:

    NDSU WBB: Cincinnati

SDSU WBB: Kentucky, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Wisconsin-Milwaukee

    Notable year 2 wins:

NDSU MBB: Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin

    NDSU WBB: Georgetown, Creighton, Alabama

SDSU WBB: Nebraska, Colorado State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Alabama, Colorado

*In this context, notable = BCS conferences + MAC, MWC, MVC & Horizon.

The wins I highlighted in red, while they may be teams from major conferences, they were not good teams in those conferences. DI wins yes, quality wins or beating "good" teams, not so much.

  21. pretty hard to judge players that seen the court like 10 minutes total last year, this years seniors never got a shot, I'll admit it, but how can you say NDSU will NEVER get recruits like those again? When Woodside, Winks, Nelson were recruited they were not wanted by any other DI schools, but Miles threw it out there and recognized their talent. The huge advantage they had was they played 5 years together, thats something that most schools don't get. Trust me NDSU and UND will get a jewel in the rough now and then but your right, we will not get the "star" every year

Just to clarify, Nelson, Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin, was asked by Bo Ryan to walk on at Wisconsin and Woodside, was asked to walk on at the Minnesota (Monson was still the head coach).

You are right, they weren't really wanted but interest, however mild, was there. What made Tim such a great coach was his ability to get those kids to come to NDSU. The man could recruit, especially the midwest. It hasn't gone as well at Col. St. Hopefully he's getting used to the area and starting to find those kids in that part of the country too.

  22. Is there any news on the status of Kate Sharkova? If not, can UND expect an answer soon or could this year count as a redshirt year?

Even if she is cleared to play this year, wouldn't it be best to redshirt her? 2 years of 6'5 is better than a year and a half, especially when this team will be lucky to win 10 games.
