  1. It looks to me like you are comparing scores. I wouldn't say South Dakota has come farther because they have been ahead of us for years. We'll see when we play them if the Sioux have made any progress in cutting that gap. I think the basketball program is where the football program is at this point. They have a year or two with the young players, then the expectation for major improvement will definitely be there.

Agree with statement that USD was already ahead of us. Also believe that basketball is a sport where improvement can be made more quickly than a sport like football. 1 or 2 impact basketball players can turn average into very good in a year. I don't believe that can be done in football.

  2. I don't disagree with you - that is why I prefaced my comment by saying we have a long way to go! My primary point was that Wisconsin is damn good based upon how bad they kicked NC St.

Totally agree. Wisc. is real good.

  3. Northern Iowa just beat the 6-0 Iowa State by 6 last night at UNI. That just shows we are not that far from being a very good team with so many young players. If not for about 5 minutes in our game with UNI we could have won that game. Go Sioux

Please, lets not compare how bad we lost to how bad others lost to teams we both play. To anyone who knows anything about sports, common opponents and comparing scores means nothing. If you think us losing by 15 and Iowa St. losing by 6 means we'd only lose to Iowa St. by 9, that's nonsense.

We have a lot of work to do and a long way to go. Lets just keep playing, dig in and watch them become what they will become.

  4. I'm a UND guy but I'd think SU wins going away. Can't ever put a number on a game like this but this SU team is a sleeper in the Summit this year. Good shooters, decent size. The games with Oregon and Minnesota make thing it will be tough for UND to stay close.

  5. I would be shocked if Phil ever puts his name to UND basketball. He's just not that in to UND. Think of the financial impact he could make for our program. He's no Engelstad but he makes $12-15 million a year coaching. As much as he would be a great asset, when he leaves the Lakers, he's going into deep hiding in my opinion.

  6. Congrats to the Bison...not a great year performance wise, but they did enough to get the wins more often than not this year. I can't say I will be cheering for them...but I will acknowledge what they have accomplished.

    Ditto

  7. Disappointing game today, especially since I drove down from Fargo and sat in the cold to watch that debacle. Overall, with the exception of some poor pass defense, the D looked pretty good. On the offensive side of the ball, the Sioux looked like a junior high squad. I continue to be amazed that a college quarterback at ANY level can be as inaccurate as our dynamic duo is. Sadly, we also couldn't run the ball, as any defense facing the Sioux can stack 10 in the box when they don't have any respect for that pathetic passing game.

Mussman has to bring in a junior college QB before next year if they keep him around. Personally, I think he needs to go and UND needs to bring someone in with no ties to UND, that has recruiting ties outside of ND and MN. Until that happens, look for more of the same.

I think if you look at our roster now, we are recruiting plenty outside the area. Not many ND kids on that roster. I'd never not want to recruit Minn. The metro area is loaded with players.

  8. A win against Missouri St Tomorrow makes it a Lock to the Playoffs at 8-3, a loss we are still not out at 7-4 as all our wins are DI wins with a FBS OOC win, the Bubble teams below us several have 6 DI wins (including Montana) and the ideal number is 7 (not a rule but a preferred guideline). The biggest thing is the Northern Iowa at Western Illinois game. Western wins and it gets messy. FCS Pres thinks the Valley gets 3 teams this year with that scenario.

Tomorrow is a HUGE game for NDSU

    On this site...........no one cares!!!

  9. While I don't think Mussman should be fired, I am curious as to why you think "he has earned it". I think if he had earned it, the question as to whether or not he should continue as the head coach would be much easier to answer.

I think he should keep his job because I think the odds of getting a good quality coach here at this low point in the transition are small. Mussman is part and parcel of digging the hole the program is now in. Let him keep the shovel until they are playoff eligible. At that point, either he turns it around or the job is now more attractive to someone who can. I do not however, agree that Mussman has earned that opportunity. The lack of quality wins is evidence of that.

I guess my point in believing he's "earned" the right to see this through to the Big Sky is the body of work he's done over 10 or more years with the program. He was a very good O.C., winning a National Championship. We always had excellent DII football players on offense and he gets a lot of credit for recognizing talent at that level and bringing them to UND. Now that we have a conference affiliation, lets let him have the chance to go get players for this level too. Other than QB, I believe our skill people are pretty good right now. We all knew that this period of football wasn't going to be very good. Kids aren't lining up to play here when there is no playoff aspirations or conference affiliation attached to who we are. Now, that's behind us and lets see what he can do. I believe he'll be fine.

  10. Either Devils Lake is gaining boys in grades 7-12, or schools that had more are losing more boys in those grades. It has nothing to do with success on the field. Devils Lake would be moving up if they were winless the last 3 years.

I believe that there may be a provision so that schools can play up a level if they choose. It's similar to Roseau playing up a level in Minnesota high school hockey.

Schools can opt up if they choose. Paperwork has to be done in the spring/summer prior to alignments changing. Alignments change in 2011 so paperwork had to be submitted by spring/summer of 2010.

  11. OK, thanks. So Devils Lake, going from AA to AAA, means that there have been more boys enrolled now? Or, because they have had success at AA, to now it's time to move them up to AAA. Not understanding why Shanley doesn't move up too.

The enrollment numbers were tweaked, DL has more boys in grades 7-12 so they move up. Shanley has a ways to go before they move anywhere

  12. I would ask this question? Do you see much difference in this team if Dale L was still coach of this team. I don't, Lennon left because he saw the writing on the wall and that it was going to take about 4/5 years to build the program at the FCS level. Plan and simple it will take time to build the program at the FCS level. You have two basis paths - JUCO and FBS transfers or recruit and build. It is hard to go with option one when you do not have playoffs as an option. So, you have to go with recruit and build and that is a slow process that takes 2 to 3 years to see the any results. Plus, recruiting to this point has been at a disadvantage because of no playoffs. Again, I am not saying that I am happy with the state of the program. But, it is going to take time to build the program.

Dale is 3-6 this year at S. Ill. and he was pre-season top 3 in the country. While he was really good, he wasn't God. This year he's proven to be human too.

  13. Is that how they determine what class they play in? By enrollment?

I suppose that the NDSHSA (if thats what it's called) has a web site that has enrollment numbers? I'm gonna have to check that out!

Its based on enrollment.....sort of. It has to do with the number of boys in grades 7-12, not total enrollment.

Agreed. We can't recruit top-flite talent when we have no conference, no hope for playoffs, etc.

Starting this spring, we need to be bringing much better talent than we currently have. I am willing to give Mussman and crew that chance. He has earned it.

  15. Because Valley City, Devils Lake, and Shanley are too big to compete against Velva but too small to compete against Bismarck High.

And everyone needs a trophy. ;)

Sarcasm dually noted!! I do believe Velva would have a little something for all 3 of them most years.

  16. You guys are actually proud of this win??? Look for a lot of disappointment this season.

More proud of the fact that we scored 77 points................in one game. That was usually a weekend of work for us last year. We all know we're no NDSU when it comes to roundball. Dec. 11th, maybe!!!! :D

  17. Agree Jose is tbe backup - when Jenson is back things will change. How about the Defense? We put the hurt on SDSU so we'll see what you do next week!!!!

I don't think it will interesting at all. With this QB combo we've got going, we're going to lose. Our defense would have to score twice to be in the game next weekend. SDSU QB is bad so we may get that done but don't see how we win in Brookings. Time to put stuff away, recruit for 2012 and prioritize the skill positions on this team. We have solid RB's and WR's but this QB thing has got to be improved.

  18. NDSU played at Oregon??? Isn't that too far for you guys to travel???

Seriously though, Oregon is a nice tune-up for your upcoming contests against Mayville & Valley City. ;)

Both home games. Their first 4 home games are UMC, Concordia, Mayville St. and Valley City. Might as well have season tickets to UND games right now. :D
