  1. Have a feeling that kings walk isnt going to put up with this stuff another year..

not gunna mention any names cuz idk for sure or what they did but there were a few cop cars out there yesterday afternoon.

Heard there was an arrest before the tournament even started. No clue as to who or for what but its never good to start your charity fund-raising event with law enforcement taking people away in handcuffs.

Anyone play in this today? Curious as to the celebrity's in attendance and if the tournament went off better than last year. By better I mean way less alcohol consumed and more golf played. Last year was ridiculous the way some of the people acted.

  3. Perry was a wonderful father, husband, and man. He fought the disease to the best of his ability; he never quit. Not only did he never quit, he never asked anyone to feel sorry for him or did he ever let us see him feeling sorry for himself. As I watched him these last few years, he cherished his life, his children and his family. I appreciate the gifts I have more today, and I know many others do also, because Perry showed us that life is short and needs to be embraced.

He was a good man and he will be missed but he won't be forgotten. :)

  4. The Summit would have been in the play-in game maybe once in the past five NCAA tournaments under this new format. Of course the Summit has benefited by sending their top team to the tournament in at least four of those seasons, the best team in the Summit is usually pretty solid.

Has a team from the Summit ever won a game in the NCAA tourney? Maybe Oral Roberts?

  5. there we go! I knew that I had heard about it on here during the Olympics and I couldn't remember where....thanks GeauxSioux.

My bad, I had no idea. The sad part is I didn't even think "ladies" curling. I was focused on the men only. Terrible.

  6. Wasn't there another current UND student in the Olympics? On the curling team?

I don't believe at the Olympics. Maybe the World Championships the year before but I don't think there were any UND kids on the Olympic Curling teams.

  7. It would have been interesting if the Big 12 would have imploded......Nobody wanted ISU....?

If Kansas couldn't find a conference, how was ISU going to find one? The Big 12 would love to see ISU get out and they'd try to bring in an Arkansas or someone like that.

  8. Jonathan Toews was also the top skater of the Olympics, and Zach Parise (along with Toews) were 2 of the 3 best forwards in the tournament.

If you're going back all 24 months, don't forget Kristo/Blais' gold medal in the World Juniors.

TJ Oshie also was a key member of the US team in the IIHF World Championships.

Lets keep it in the past 12 months. Kristo and Blais for sure at the World Jrs. The U.S. team at the IIHF, not so much. They lost to Germany.

Can we mention Kleinsasser playing for an NFC Championship?

  9. How many schools can boast the following all in one year??

Coach of the NBA Champions. Phil Jackson

NHL Coach of the year. Dave Tippett

Jonathon Toews. Olympic Champion, Captain of the NHL champions, Conn Smythe winner and will on the cover of NHL 11

Zach Parise. Silver medal in Olympics.

and then you have the Lamoreaux sisters winning silver medals and bringing UND notoriety on the world stage of Womens hockey.

Not a bad year for UND. :D

Agreed, great year for our alumni and future alumni. I bet if everyone put their heads together we could come up with some accomplishments outside the realm of sports where alum have shined over the last 12 months also. Lets see what/who we can find.

I'll start with Weston Dressler and the marvelous year he had in the CFL.

  10. Just an FYI, South Dakota State has succeeded at the Division I level with players from South Dakota State. Jenn Warkenthein, the 2009 Summit League Player or the Year and AP H.M. All-American, didn't have any other Division I offers and came from a very small town in South Dakota with no AAU/summer experience (that I know of). That throws out the logic that a player has to come from metro-Minny and Wisconsin to be D1 in ND. A college coach can always refine a home grown player who already has the groundwork needed to compete at a high level.

A player, of course. A roster with 8-10 players, no. No one has ever said we shouldn't try and get the local players that have DI talent, or even potential. I am of the opinion that we currently have too many players without DI talent. We can all find the "one" diamond in the rough but to build a DI team that can go to the National tournament, like SDSU, you have to recruit and win the recruiting battles against other DI schools like SDSU, NDSU, Creighton, Northern Iowa, etc. You may even have to win a kid from a Big 10 school. We haven't done that yet and probably won't until we're in a better conference and eligible for the National Tournament.

  11. By that logic, I quess we should only sign gals from Kittson County or Roseau Country, where we have had terrific recruits.

Those counties are more like North Dakota than Twin Cities recruits, and yet they yielded two of the best players in Sioux history.

You are correct, they did yield 2 very good players. In the history of UND Women's basketball, I don't think your logic holds much water either. I've been around basketball for many years, I know DI talent when I see it. If you believe UND will win conference titles in a league besides the one they're in now with kids from Belcourt, Fort Yates, etc. you go right ahead and believe that. When I tell you that the recruiting base needs to be Minneapolis, the state of Wisconsin, and other neighboring highly populated states, you should trust me that I know what I'm talking about.

  12. I know Long and her family have attended a UND game or two in the past. It's hard to say how much mutual interest there is, but I assume there is at least some interest.

We haven't had great success with NoDak kids lately in the program; don't seem to pan out and be the legit DI players we need to win. Hope one or both of these work out for UND but I'm going to have to see it to believe it.

  13. Those are some similar questions I had as well. But there is no doubt we were going to need someone who is going to be a primary ball handler next year. I would have liked it to be Privatsky (maybe it still will be?), but with all the injuries I'm not sure where she is at. The future is Burck, especially with her size and athleticism, but I'm hoping she is just given time to develop, and in 2 years she can develop into a new type of point guard here at UND. From the statements its sounds like they have speed, which is good, but how that translates into D1 basketball ability is anyones guess. How we got on recruiting these ladies is anyones guess but consider me surprised that we were able to get players out of Arizona for basketball.

There isn't anything special about Arizona Juco basketball. Lot's of juco teams from North Dakota have gone to Arizona and competed very well. I'm sure they aren't anything better or worse than the kids who play at Lake Region, Williston, or even Wahp. Science for that matter.

  14. Not really strange. Creighton plays in the Ralph Englestad of college basketball. Their attendance is top 15 in all of college basketball. The school has money and donors.

I was thinking strange in terms of who has done more lately. Ben has beaten Iowa and Iowa St. the last 3 years, coached in 2 NCAA tourney's and beaten Kansas. Mac is good but just hasn't been on much of a hot streak the last few years.

  15. Mac underperformed at ISU. This is really a win-win for both parties. ISU gets a new coach without having to buy out his contract and Mac gets a pretty sweet gig in a good conference with a great long-term contract.

Not sure its fair to say he "underperformed" at ISU. Wesley Johnson leaving was a bad deal. Not being able to keep Harrison Barnes in town was another bad deal. Those 2 guys would have made a huge difference in the program.

I think Mac found out that mid-major and high major bball is really 2 different worlds. I'm glad he got to leave before they threw him out. He'll win at Creighton and they'll like him in Omaha. Rumor is 10 years at $900,000/year. I think he'll be ok. :( Still double the money Ben is getting at Northern Iowa. That seems a little strange.

  16. These MVC schools all have to compete with instate Big 10 and Big 12 schools, there is a reason why their football teams suffer from a lack of interest.

NDSU and UND are not comparable to the MVC schools, we are more in line with the Montana schools. Football has a much easier time being a revenue generator. Football is far from a waste of resources.

It would be interesting to see if Montana made more money from their "1 and done" basketball experience in the NCAA tourney or from a runner-up finish in the I-AA championship game for football team. I bet it isn't close.

The idea that competing with Big 10 schools and Big 12 schools really doesn't hold anymore water for football than it does for basketball. The interest generated by either would be the same in my opinion. When it comes to recruiting, both football and basketball in the MVC and Horizon are working with 1 hand tied behind their back.

  17. SIU must have some alums with very deep pockets to be able to operate their football program at a significant loss every year, AND to pay their basketball coach $700k!

Like I said earlier, the MVC is a BASKETBALL conference first and a FOOTBALL conference second. The revenue they generate from being successful in basketball is way bigger than football in I-AA (or whatever they call it). The NCAA money for the "March Madness" trickles to all those schools, even if they don't make the tourney. There is no big money for the I-AA playoff system. We are doing it backwards up here by making football our "cash cow" and playing at a lower sub-division. We should be emphasizing basketball if we're trying to generate revenue.

  18. Why can't the Dakota 4 help make the Summit into our own version of the Horizon, rivaling them in quality?

I think given time and with the resources we have being the flagship public, research universities of 2 states, one of us can build our programs to the level of Butler in MBB.

You all realize that even with Ben's new contract at UNI, he's still only the 3rd highest paid coach in the MVC!! The guy at Creighton and the guy at Southern Illinois both make more than Ben's $450,000. We don't have and probably never will have the resources being kicked around for bball in the MVC, or the Horizon for that matter. Recruiting to Vermillion, Brookings, Fargo, and GF is not going to be easy and with all the DI schools that exist in the midwest, we aren't going to win many battles with the teams from either the Horizon or the MVC. I know SU likes being in the conference they're in for football but, truth be told, those schools are bball schools more than football schools. Being DI, we are going to have to choose which program we give our resources to. I don't think its going to be bball.

  19. After watching one hell of a game by Butler yesterday, wouldn't it be great if the North Dakota schools ever got into the Horizon League. But, then I thought......maybe it is better to be in the Summit League because a school would have to put together one hell of a BB program to even compete. The same goes for the MVC for sports other than football.

For those of us who are bball fans before football fans the Horizon or MVC would be way better leagues to be in than the Summitt. The Summitt isn't anything special for athletics. Its a bunch of DI wannabe's that need to limit costs/overhead so they can say they're DI. One team a year will get to the dance. The same might be true for the Horizon and MVC but the level of competitiion on a weekly basis is even close to comparable.

  20. Is the game over? I must have missed that part.

The game isn't over but this looks all too familiar................again. Every time we go east of the Mississippi River we look like the slowest team in the tournament. Frustrating, no doubt

  21. I think Coach Jake should follow the same model set my Mark Few @ Gonzaga. Take a mid-major and continue to make them a nationally known team. At this point in time it seems easier to recruit athletes to top level mid-majors than lower level high majors. Those coaches get to sell a much higher chance of getting to the Dance @ N. Iowa, Gonzaga, St. Mary's etc... than right now at Iowa, Iowa State, DePaul, St. John's etc...

Biggest reason I disagree is now is the the time for Ben to set himself financially for the rest of his life. He can coach in the Big 10. The athletes he wants for the style of play he likes will come to him at a Big 10 school. He can triple his salary, get a 5 year deal, and be set. Its the right time to go if its the right job.
