Minnesota is called the North Star state. We aren't. But we are called thr Roughrider state. I don't dislike the Noth Star idea on it's name alone, only because the context does not fit.

I would bet that if they pick an abstract thing like "Spirit" a second equally weak candidate and then include a no nickname option in the final three, you'll see no nickname win in a walk. They would be wise to include a strong nickname candidate like Roughriders to prevent that from happening.

I believe once the choices narrow, provided they don't involve the least popular ones, we will see a majority rally around one name. The trend appears to be Roughriders.

If no nickname wins... the de facto nickname remains Fighting Sioux. I do not believe that is within the spirit of the agreement. I don't think UND should take that chance. I also hate using the word, "spirit".
