  1. No surprise but you're missing the point. Clearly the NDSU coaches would never be calling on a UND recruit, the NDSU fans continue to insist that kids like that are well below their staff's standards. Then when it continues to happen, heads go straight into the sand.

They were courtesy calls. They want to keep a relationship with Davies, they have a good looking d-back that will be a senior next year, That is their real target.

  2. I can tell you that at least one current commit was pursued by NDSU after committing to UND.  The recruit said "thanks, but no thanks."

I have connections in the Hawley area that have told me that UND coaches have been in contact with Ellefson since he committed to NDSU. I couldn't believe it, Not Bubba!!  Guess what, they ALL do it. Every recruit that has committed to NDSU and have been on the radio with your play by play guy have said the calls still come even after they have committed. That is college football these days. If you are trying to say NDSU coaches do it more than everybody else, you are fooling yourself.

  3. .....and NDSU has never, ever lost a recruit to UND.  Ever. :silly::p

Not never, but recently, not very often. Even this year when the recruiting machine Bubba had a full year to recruit, NDSU won an incredible amount of the recruiting battles with UND. I think NDSU will be just fine without the Hartness twins.

  4. Cmon guys, it literally takes 1 NDSU fan to throw this thread completely off topic...always the same posters who bite on it too

Last I checked Iwarri Smith is a top recruit of UND's 2015 class. How is he off topic?

  5. I hear ya, but I don't think that's what he was going for. If you put stock in his twitter there was alot of chatter with other sioux recruits, and the rival coaches tweet is another example. Regardless, time will tell. Just hope he sticks around, we could use a guy like that.

That is probably what he means. I hope it works out for him and UND. Michigan has never been very good to NDSU. The handful of athletes they have gotten from Michigan over the past 5 or 6 years haven't worked out. They have a D-lineman from last years recruiting class that hopefully will work out. With so many MAC teams in Michigan, I think they scoop up most players that are borderline Good FCS/Lower Level FBS quality.

  6. He sat by an NDSU coach on his flight to ND. That's why he has connections via twitter to NDSU. Also, it's obviously known to UND recruits who the rival is and who is on the schedule next season for the first time in over 10 years. Oh, and Mr. Smith can play more than just DB; he played RB and WR as well.

Sorry, but I was sure someone on this thread was concerned about Smith following NDSU coaches on Twitter long before his visit this weekend. Is that not true?

  7. If your are basing ur interpretation of committent on tweets, I would recommend reevaluating ur process. The kid is pretty twitter happy if you have watched. I think he will be in Grand Forks and will be a solid athlete for us.

And I think he will be in GF next year and will probably be a good player for UND. But "on the clock" is generally a draft phrase when teams are picking players, making it sound like if NDSU wants to choose him, they better decide soon.

  8. I interpreted it as the former, and not the latter.

Of course you do. Although he follows NDSU coaches and tweets an NDSU National Championship ring. I would guess the latter is more realistic.Kind of strange for a kid to keep tweeting about a school other than the one he committed to. I would call this one a very soft verbal. Although I don't see NDSU offering him. They are pretty full of db's.

  9. Do you really think it's $100? Seriously.

It happens everywhere, even at FBS level. After 20-30 flights the costs start to add up. They need a bigger recruiting budget.

Also, some kids fly into GF. Some don't. Its not 100%...all based on cost I imagine.

We will agree on one thing, they need a bigger recruiting budget. Do you think Hak flies kids into Fargo?

  10. So Iwarri Smith was sitting next to "rival NDSU coach" on the plane from MPLS to Fargo.  Tweeted a picture of the nat'l championship ring.  This could get interesting.....

EDIT:  Might be good thing he said it's a rival coach, but I'm sure he got an earful......

My question is why is UND flying recruits into Fargo. It seems rather stupid to me. You may save $100 but you are making it look like Grand Forks is some rinky dink town with no flights in and out. Is that the impression you want to give recruits?

  11. I did not mean to come across that way. I do not believe fcs is jv and didn't mean to belittle fcs football in any way. I support the und football team every way I can and I follow them whether they are winning or losing. I'm a und fan. Even though und hasn't played ndsu in football in such a long time I'm excited for the game this fall and I still would consider ndsu a rival. I hope that und can compete and win.

But let's be realistic. Und hockey is still a bigger deal than ndsu football

Absolutely,  A major national sports network will bring a crew of 50 and set up shop for a week and air a 3-hour national telecast in front of the Ralph this hockey season. When UND gets to the Frozen Four in April, all of the local TV stations will send not only Sports reporters, but news anchors and reporters, teams of photographers, and will air hour long or longer pre-game shows the night before and the morning of the game. Even stations from Western ND will send people to the game.15 to 20 thousand fans will travel a 1,000 miles to the championship game. The complete season of UND hockey tickets sell out in less than an hour after going on sale,

I guess you are right, nobody can argue with you. UND hockey is much bigger than NDSU football..

  12. four consecutive titles ring hollow if you lose to the knuckleheads to the north.

Yep, and all NDSU fans and fans of March Madness can remember about last year's men's basketball season is that NDSU lost to UND. Nobody cares or remembers they made it to the Big Dance and beat Oklahoma.

  13. They'd have their foundations buy enough tickets to get to the minimum is what he is saying. It's the Eastern Michigan model. The rule let's tickets sold count.

I'm not involved in the NCAA so I don't know if it is something they would ever let happen.

I think it's a dumb idea to go FBS with the intention of using sponsors or foundations to get to the minimum but if that's an avenue that is available and some schools choose to pursue it, that's their prerogative.

So you can fool the NCAA but telling them you sold 15,000 seats in a 12,000 seat stadium? I guess the NCAA is stupid.

The 50,000 fans for a "Neutral site" game at TCF Bank stadium won't happen. NDSU wouldn't agree to it.

  14. The Montana schools aren't going to start an FBS transition if it's partners aren't well enough off and have 15k stadiums.

You too mad to even think.

And which partners have 15k stadiums and which ones that do have even a chance of averaging 15k if they do?

  15. We can all agree on this. Prayers for all involved, all of the injured students and their families, and for the student and driver that lost their lives and their families. It will be hard and take a lot of time, but hopefully all can forgive and get through this tragedy.

Maybe crossing arms at all rural railroad crossing would be too expensive, but how about a solar powered flashing sign or light when a train is approaching or present. That would be fairly inexpensive and well worth the cost if it prevents even one of the tragic accidents.

  16. We've  been through this many times.  For the last time:  UND can remodel Memorial to 20,000 and play late season games at the Alerus.  UND and all the Big Sky teams will need to average 15,000 in the second season in transition.  UND's Foundation could, if needed, buy tickets to average 15,001 at 1/3 rd the price  (three games at Memorial at 20k and two games at the Alerus would only have to average 7.5 k to get to an average of 15,001).  The NCAA accepts that and would certify UND FBS if the scheduling, scholarships, and  the sports requirements are met   UND almost meets the scholarship requirement now for other sports and has more then the 16 sports required  right now.  Most Big Sky and FCS schools only have 14 or 15 sports (except the California ones).

The Big Sky is one of the few FCS conference that has enough full members to get eight through a transition (seven for the Big Sky because of Idaho) to qualify as an FBS conference.  The NCAA almost certainly won't allow individual schools to pursue FBS unless their sponsored by a conference.  NDSU will have to join the Big Sky to go FBS.  When NDSU joins the Big Sky, everybody in Fargo will praise the NCAA and the Big Sky once again.

And what happens when only the Montana schools qualify after the 2 years are up?   UND will not triple their attendance to 20,000 for the first games of the season when they are playing the same schools that they are playing right now. Call a new Big Sky FBS or FCS, you are still playing the same teams you are drawing 6 to 7 thousands fans per game now.

  17. A waiver to have an option to become an FBS conference, not waiver to be one right now. There's a huge difference.

Fullerton said the Big Sky has an open offer NDSU, so your panties can be unwadded and washed now.

The MVC wouldn't make it, as 8 transitioning FBS members would need to be full MVC members and make the MVC FBS. Loyola, Drake, Bradley and Wichita St would raise a stink.

The CAA has the same exact problem. Stony Brook, Albany, Maine, New Hampshire, Villanova, and Richmond aren't full time members. Northeastern and Hofstra have blocked some of them.

Even the P5 does not want carte blanche entry into FBS. They don't mind more team, but they don't want individual schools to go FBS by themselves. A COnference without at least eight football playing full members will not be allowed, as they can't be an FBS conference by definition.

And the NCAA is going to give Big Sky members what 15 to 20 years to comply with the attendance requirements of FBS?

Exactly how are Kelley and Faison going to be able to convince the City or State to give them $150 to $200 million for a stadium so they can go FBS when their 12,000 seat stadium is half empty right now? UND football does not have a supply problem, they have a major demand problem.

  18. THe GoDaddy matches MAC vs Sun Belt teams.  So if NDSU gets in the MAC like lakebison wants, maybe NDSU will have to worry about that.

But having been to GoDaddy's bowls, most fans take in the special Mardi Gras style parade before hand, and stuff their gills with seaford on the Mobile Bay Causeway.  If you want barbecue like Frisco, there's some barbecue shrimp or even pork!

THe CFP bowls made cable records for the highest ever ratings, approaching NFL playoff and even Super Bowl levels even though those are on broadcast channels.  The P5 and G5 will want more money, and ESPN will counter they want another round, maybe even include a spot for a G5 team, like Boise St.  FBS college football will have money coming out of their ears and they won't be sharing with the NCAA or FCS.  If you don't want Kelley to be part of a Big Sky move to the G5,  I suggest you begin lobbying now.  The price of admission currently to the G5 is a 15,000 stadium and a hardship waiver for the Big Sky an account of Idaho.   Each G5 non-participating teams could get $4 million in the playoffs expand, compared to $1 million now.

UND can stay FCS and lose money, get no exposure, and lose its conference allies, of it can go FBS with the Montana's.  Write Kelley if you insist that FCS is the better way. A seven-figure check would be helpful to convince him, to help cover FCS losses.otiry

I am not a cheerleader for FBS, as I wrote in the initial post of this thread.  I just informing you and others what is coming down the pike.

If you are talking about UND and the Big Sky going to the 2nd tier of college football below the P5, then that may happen. They would go along with the MVFC, CAA, etc. If you are talking ONLY the Big Sky is going to that level you are smoking something.

So because the Big Sky has Idaho as a non-football playing member, the NCAA is going to give the BSC a waiver to go FBS along with a majority of schools that have NO chance of meeting FBS minimum standards? Even Idaho didn't come close to qualifying in attendance last year.

Please keep talking. You are making us dim-witted Bison fans look awfully bright. Why stop at just FBS. Maybe the P5 wants the Big Sky. Maybe nobody told those presidents that the Big Sky now includes THE University of North Dakota. That ought to turn some heads.

  19. As a commissioner, Fullerton is employed at the behest of Big Sky Presidents. If a majority did not want him to speak on the subject, he would have kept his mouth SHUT.

At least eight BSC presidents want to pursue FBS for the Big Sky. I'm saying Kelley is a yes vote, otherwise we would be sharing bread crumbs with Idaho St and SUU.

Politics 101 of a conference. Fullerton is not in charge, but his job is to be out in front when the Presidents don't want to be yet.

You say you are getting your information from an article that doesn't even state that Fullerton's plan has one president that is in favor of an FBS move. Where are you getting the 8 presidents in favor of such a move?

  20. This entire starting lineup and substitutions is goofy.  Starting 3 point guards all 6' of under and Nash as the 4 that doesn't know how to box out and it doesn't matter who you start at the 5.  We will get out rebounded horribly every game and that will be the difference in several games this year that will cost us.  Time to try something different and don't start 3 point guards with only one sub being Antwi.  Maybe go big with Nash at the 3 and Calc at the 4 and Shanks at the 5, who knows or something like this.  Coleman needs time and Hobaugh has proven he deserves to be in.  Please tell me what happened to Crandall?  I thought he was playing great in pre season and then suddenly nothing about him.  If he is that good there is something more than we are red shirting him.  Is it grades or and undisclosed matter?  We didn't red shirt Shields or Cashman and all they are doing know is watching from the front row.

If you start both Calc or Shanks, at least one of them ends up having to most likely guard an athletic 6-4 to 6-6 kid that can shoot or drive by them if they play tight defense. What you lose by giving up easy points you won't gain back with your bigs very limited offensive ability.

Kingranch is living proof that, if God wanted to give the world an enema, he would put the tip in Fargo!!

Man, as a nurse I have NEVER heard this one.  After laughing for 5 minutes, I will commit this to memory!

    Thanks,

And He has already been to Grand Forks to perform a Lobotomy...
  22. Kelley has already decided to go FBS with the Montana's and others. Fans that disagree can take it up with him and Faisson. If Minneapolis gets a bowl game, UND will be well represented there. Other sites: maybe a couple thousand depending on the location and how.many alums are in the area.

If we don't move up, well probably be stuck in the WAC.

Maybe Tom Miller can use an open records request to get emails and phone records of Faison and Kelley to back up your claim. If there is a secret deal that FBS is a done deal for UND and the BSC, there has to be some communication to that effect.

  23. Very small sample. Played 11 mins in the game against Marquette. The biggest difference between him and Calc and Salmonson is that Shanks is only a freshman. He also apparently is able to shoot a little bit beings he attempted two three-pointers against Marquette. It would be nice if he can bulk up but I don't see him adding a whole lot.

Yes, The five minutes or so I watched him it looked like 30-40 pounds would help him out. You don't see a lot of 200-210 pound big men do really well in D1 basketball unless they are freakishly athletic.
