There is a lot of grey area.  It's not as cut and dry as you make it out to be either.  I had a conversation with one of NDSUs coaches after DeLuca got granted And they were fairly certain it was going to happen but couldn't 100% guarantee it would be granted.  There was a lot of work that went into making the decision to end his season after he wasn't needed anymore.

Actually he was needed. They would likely be playing this weekend if DeLuca hadn't gotten hurt. He played as a true freshman, therefore next year is his 5th year and he gets his hardship year. You could tell in the Iowa game he could barely lift his arm because of the pain. He is actually better than most FCS linebackers with one arm though, so if they didn't think there was a very good chance of him getting another year, he probably would have played through the pain.

    Chad Warthall?

Walthall makes about the same as Jones makes now and he is in D2. UND would have to open up the check book for Walthall.

Obviously This is a do or die year for Jones....I was the only one that knew Jones was 100% Safe prior seasons  despite almost everyone hear saying he was gone...not bragging just stating the facts..folks.   Not happy with most of his recruits for 16 and 17 classes , The league is getting stronger and next year the BSC will be tougher.  Jones has been an exercise in being an ok coach....this year he needs to bring home some brass IMO.  Reasonable probability that a new coach will not be better than Jones ...but sometimes change becomes necessary for the sake of change.

What makes you think the Big Sky is getting stronger? Right now the Big Sky has 5 of the worst 20 teams in D1 basketball. With the talent UND has on their roster, not even Jones can keep UND from at least having a 500 conference record and making the Big Sky tournament, which will be enough for Jones to keep his job, maybe get another extension at $100,000/year. Faison is a little strapped for cash right now, and he knows he will have to double the coaches salaries if he gets rid of Jones and his staff. He is looking for ways to cut to pay for Bubba and his assistants raises.

I'd bet he gets drafted. His ability to tackle in space is rare and extremely valuable the way offenses are designed to get the athletes in space.

I would be surprised if Reyes gets drafted. He is a very good FCS Safety, but I am not sure if he is an NFL caliber safety. Heagle for NDSU was an exceptional tackler and extremely hard hitter a couple of years ago, and he had a tryout or two but didn't stick on. I am not sure Reyes is better than Heagle. It may just take the right opportunity though, he may get that chance. I am not sure either (Reyes or Heagle) defends the pass well enough to make it in the NFL. Run stopping safeties are not a huge commodity in the NFL. Coe has a chance to get drafted. Did I hear he has an invite to an all star game? If so, if he shows well there he should get a shot. I personally think he has a better shot than Zach Johnson of NDSU.

Enough with you Bison fans complaining about UND in Fargo.  I was at the game and they did nothing as over the top as Bison fans claim.  It was more frustration with getting beat by 20.

Funny, I was listening to your radio announcer, Paul Ralston, who basically said UND had it coming when the malee broke out because of how UND acted in Fargo. He said they shouldn't dish it out if they aren't perpared to take it when it comes back around.

On a side note, I wonder when his suspension without pay starts?

The time out with 24 sec left is what caused all the friction. That was a horse sh$t call. I'll never forget Jones' expression when they called that time out.

What about the dunk with 5 seconds to go by UND in Fargo? That was classy? 2 years ago in Fargo when UND was getting blown out, an NDSU bench warmer threw up a shot with 4 Seconds left in the game because the shot clock was going to go off and Jones threw a temper tantrem in the hand shake line with Richman. You keep supporting the "classy" Mr. Jones and you will be seeing teams year after year of above aveage talant and very dissapointing results.

I will take Richman with average talent over Jones with superior talant every year.

JJ said in an interview he considered both NDSU and UND and he decided UND was the best fit.  I don't know what NDSU offered but apparently the door was open to go to NDSU too. (unless JJ is lying).   So apparently  NDSU wanted him too.

Again nobody is saying NDSU wasn't interested in JJ. What I have heard and I beleive even Siouxfootball Insider has mentioned is Klieman told him they didn't have any RB scholly money this year, but could have some in the future. (they have 4 or 5 in the program that will be back next year and already have a commitment from a very promising back from Wisconsin.  JJ mentioned he talked to both programs and felt Bubba wanted him more, as evidenced by his scholly offer and being in his living room Sunday.  I am not saying he would have picked NDSU if offers were the same, he very likely still would have gone to UND. But obviously in his situation, UND wanted him more, and I think he made the best decision for himself. Would you prefer NDSU coaches pull offers to commits or yank scholarships from kids in the program to take a transfer just because he is a local kid?

    ..........anyone remember Ryan Chappel?

JJ is a little taller. 35 lbs heavier. And as fast.

    JJ is 6'1" and 230..........he has run a sub 11.00 second 100M.

I am not saying NDSU didn't want him or wouldn't tale him, but lets not get crazy. The kid is talented but the only reason that he is transferring is that he is apparently not good enough to see the field at the U or Minn.  He is at least 4 or 5 on the RB depth chart there. He will not be a program changer at RB at either NDSU or UND, He will be a part of the rotation.

I think we'll find room for him. Can tell the Bison didn't really want him though, there's only one thread with 40 plus pages dedicated to just him.

I am not saying NDSU didn't want him. I think he is needed more on both teams at a position other than RB though. He is obviously a talented athlete. There is obviously a reason he chose UND orver other schools. Maybe he liked the coaches better, maybe for a specific major, maybe he saw a better chance of seeing the field sooner one place over the other, we may never know and it really doesn't matter.

JJ could start game 1 next fall at UND....and would be an upgrade. He's the real deal.  He is Santiago and Brady in a single package.

........and NDSU thought they got a good pick up with King Frasier a couple years back.

Frazier isn't bad and JJ may be better, but on a list of upgrades needed for UND FB, tailback is probably last on the list.

So much for style points making a difference.

What style points? You beat a 1-5 team that lost at home to a Division 2 team. You don't get style points for that, you just better win. I heard someone (Jack Michaels or Joel Heitkamp) saying the toughest game left in UND's schedule may be Northern Colorado in Greeley. There are no style points left on your schedule. You just better win all of your games if you want a slam dunk playoff bid. 8-3 with that schedule is not a guarantee.

From Iowa-  is Iowa a good team or a 2-3 team in their last 5 games?  In those 5- Beat a MAC team and Iowa St.  Grinded but lost a snooze Fest to Michigan St., were man handled by Stanford, and controlled by SU.

Iowa tried playing their style of football, which NDSU plays that same style way better than them.

You are right, Iowa is probably a middle of the road G5 team. Hell, Bowling Green would have been a tougher test. Maybe those voters in the AP Top 25 poll got confused and actually were voting of the UND Fighting Hawks instead of NDSU...

Let's just say it, a good performance against a terrible Browns team that is led by RG III????  This game doesn't tell us much.

Are you kidding. Yes, it was just one game and nobody should be preparing a bust for Canton just yet, but it was an impressive debut even if it was against the Browns. They are a bad team but their defense is not horrible. Joe Haden is considered one of the best CB's in the league. I don't know what great_sioux was watching, but he must not have watched the entire game. There may have been a handful of the  37 throws he would like back, but the 2 TD throws and several others were perfect throws where only his receiver could get it. His touch on Sunday was just fine. I am sure he will run into tougher defenses and have some bad games this year and in the future, but to claim Sunday meant nothing is crazy.

A WAC / Big Sky realignment wouldn't have those rules.  The IAC would not take the southwest choice, even if a presumed Plains / Northern Rockies WAC signaled it would go FBS.  There is still time to leave the WAC and go to the Slummit if UND doesn't want to go FBS by 2020.

Shocking that a committee looking into a budget shortfall and looking for ways to cut expenses would nix a move up to FBS with elevated expense and no viable way to increase revenues with such a move. And you can tell me all you want that a move to FBS will not increase expenses  much, and I will tell you if it doesn't, you aren't doing it correctly.

Common knowledge Midco wasn't going to get the contract unless they were the highest bidder by a lot.

    It was Forum vs KVLY.

You were saying KVLY way overbid for NDSU's FB rights. It was actually pretty close. I don't have any idea what NDSU's thinking was in selecting the winning bid, but with the open records process, it would have been tough not to go with the high bidder unless they pulled something like WDAY tried.

Bottom line this team lost a game they needed to win and should have won. I get all the hype coming in but that was an egg laid. I also get the SB D ranks 2nd all time only behind the '85 CHI Bears. I also understand it's only one game but that performance last night was not good.

Perhaps the most concerning for UND fans is a team that needs to rely on the running game having a suspect o- line.

#2 bid was a lot less than KVLYs bid. Guy that works for KVLY told me they regret how much they bid after hearing the others.

It looks like Midco's bid for NDSU FB was $360,000/year. Not that much lower than KVLY's,

Sorry for the non-sequitur here, but a while back an NDSUer asked me to substantiate my claim that NDSU needed to cut athletics by up to 15% as well. So, here it is:

    Source: https://www.scribd.com/document/320333047/Response-Redacted page 40 of 143

The amount of State funds going to NDSU athletics is much smaller than the amount of state funds UND uses for athletics, so any cuts would be smaller than UND's.

Ndsu wouldn't be paid to show those sports on TV and neither is UND.  UND gave up $$ in order to get exposure for those teams.  How much?  No idea, but it renders the comparisons between UND's and ndsu's media deals pretty useless.

So you are saying Midco won the rights to televise NDSU Mens BB, Womens BB and Volleyball by requiring the least amount that NDSU has to pay to get them shown? I don't quite get what you are trying to say. UND got $285,000 per year to have all of their sports shown. NDSU got $400,000 for football only from KVLY and my guess is they didn't have to pay Midco to get them to take the rights to BB and Volleyball. I would even go out on a limb and say they are getting some money from Midco. Are you saying NDSU is paying Midco at least $100,000 grand a year to get them to air their games?

Has UND looked at finding a naming rights sponsor for the high performance center?  Would think that could at least help with the budget... they holding our or what?

I think naming rights are more for facilities that hold large events that many people attend, not generally for facilities mostly used for training athletes.

Midco and UND are building rapport. Which both know are helping build each other up, and will be both multiple more to each side in the future, as UND conference games are already under contract with national television (and midco contract has to work around)....neither of which are happening at NDSU as KVLY just realized it only competed with basically no one.

Number 2 in the bid for NDSU football was higher than the bid for all UND sports on a yearly basis, and that was from UND buddy that they are building a great rapport with, MIDCO.

He didn't appoint her as chair. But yes, if he had any faith in the athletic department he should have put the responsibility for the future of the department with them.

Would you put faith in the financial responsibility of an Athletic Director running a million dollar plus deficit tha commits to close to another million dollar expense in FCOA the day after a rival announces they are going to provide FCOA without any plan of how to pay for it? He went on the radio and admitted he didn't know how they were going to pay fot it. Not very fiscally responsible.

ask NMSU...they crunched some numbers and said it would cost more to move down...depends on who you ask I guess but dropping unneeded sports would help.

That is because NMSU's only revenue stream from FB is guarantee games, which would drop from 4 to probaly one or two. They are not worried about being competitve on FBS.

Wild assertions are flying around by you and others but they don't bother you.

    Logic and finances will prevail.

The Big Sky'schools plans are in play, but you deny they even exist.

Kind of stupid of Faison and Kennedy to accept a rather piddly new 5-year TV contract with UND's athletic departments current financial troubles considering the impending big jump to FBS. You would think they would have allowed the last year of the contract take place and then let all of the regional media (Midco, Forum Comm, FSN) knock themselves out bidding for the contract after the big annoucement. Not a great business decision.

  24. 2 minutes ago, SiouxVolley said:

Not much, but UND won't be flying to Arizona, Utah, Oregon or California for conference games.  Academic relationships would be much more valued in the WAC.

Kennedy uses the budget to swing a committee into action, but he'll present a solution that the Heraldo geniuses haven't considered.  Going to the Slummit or MVFC would cost massively in up front fees.  The Big Sky will give the WAC UND's entrance fee and call it a day.

So flying to Texas, Washington, New Mexico and Idaho is so much better? I think Kennedy is thinking more in the line of bus trips to Fargo, Brookings, Vermillion and Omaha. Or maybe Bemidji, St. Cloud and Moorhead is more plausible than the BSC/WAC set up. But keep the dream alive. Maybe when all of the Big Sky presidents get back from vacation there will be a big press conference. I bet Whicita State backers are bursting with excitement in anticipation of that powerhouse FB conference. Who doesn't think big time football when you see UTRGV, Lamar, Northern Colorado and UND. I am surprised they have been able to keep it secret this long.
