  1. I'm not sure that was deliberate, but it has that effect. A plan to start using a new name in a year would still seem like something that could be attacked or petitioned against. Fighting Hawks is UND's nickname right now. It'll be in articles and web sites which well help it work into social media which will help make it accepted.
  2. And later in the day, UND revised it's own article to refer to its team as Fighting Hawks: http://www.undsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=210513589&DB_OEM_ID=13500
  3. First time I've seen it used in a real story not about the name itself: http://www.bigskyconf.com/news/2015/11/19/WVBALL_1119154505.aspx
  4. Next summer. Here's a nice FAQ on what won't change, what will, and when.
  5. I'm sympathetic to that point -- a one page summary of everything is a nice way to glance at everything that's happening, and those who want to dig deeper can follow a link to another page. I'll see if I can come up with something to get those back on the front. Twitter is pretty strict about not reproducing the text from tweets, so I can't just make a clickable list like I do for the forum topics. Any reproduction of a tweet has to be a live tweet with the full name, avatar, timestamp, actions, etc... In somewhat comical timing, Instagram also just announced a crack down on its display requirements yesterday, so I'm going to have to dig a bit deeper into that, and I suppose there's some chance I won't be able to do this aggregation anyway.
  6. Thanks. Link fixed. Forum software included punctuation in link.
  7. While we all look younger in photos, you're clearly familiar with Mr. Berger's Movember movement (https://us.movember.com/mospace/8054317 ). Shameless plug.
  8. The social media tracker page is supposed to be an expansion of the current Twitter feed. The breakout of social and news into their own pages reflects a combination of simplifying the front page to make it more mobile-friendly and intentionally putting my efforts into value-added (e.g. unique to siouxsports) features over things like scoreboards that are now trivially available from other sources. While the left-hand navigation is gone, the schedules are still accessible from both the scoreboards (on the right) and from the site links on the bottom. As I hinted at above in discussing "value added" I was trying to strike a balance between not putting too much effort into features that are available elsewhere, though maintaining basic items of interest to siouxsports visitors like schedules and standings.
  9. Sorry, didn't mean to skip a question. Back when the site was entirely manual (e.g. each update involved me typing it in, including every score to every game and every change to the standings) I had to limit it to hockey and football due to time constraints. Those sports were chosen because they were the information I wanted to find on the Internet, but that wasn't already available anywhere else in one spot. Now, thanks to automation, I no longer have to type in things like scores. But, scores are also discoverable from countless other places (everything from UND athletics' site to ESPN), so I'm not putting in a lot of effort to duplicate something you can get elsewhere and where I'm not adding value. I keep displaying the hockey scores because I have to maintain the automation technology to acquire them because I use them for rankings and other things; I keep football around out of tradition, I guess. But, part of the new social & news page improvements are that they incorporate more of the major sports (including men's & women's basketball and volleyball).
  10. If you think this looks more dated than this, we'll have to respectfully agree to disagree. But, no doubt, design is a subjective thing and good people will disagree on what's good.
  11. Given that the page is dynamic (the blocks move around based on content), I assume your objection is to the inclusion of blogs? I was torn on that. I considered dropping aggregating blogs altogether, but then people expressed that they find that useful. One option I've considered is weighting traditional media more heavily so it's always in the lead (top row). Another option would be to move the blogs into the social media tracker somehow, since they really are more user-generated content, and reserve the news page for traditional media.
  12. Yep, that's what we'll do for now -- start to seed in references to Fighting Hawks. But it would just be silly not having some Fighting Hawks-related domains pre-purchased in preparation for a day when someone looking for UND athletics is more likely to look for Fighting Hawks than Sioux.
  13. Already got that one I'll repeat something I said in a different thread...
  14. Not changing anything right now, the only reason I'm talking about it now is to lock in domain names (which will become scarcer now that the final name is known). If the day comes that UND students or new fans are likely to search for "Fighting Hawks message board" or "Fighting Hawks football", I want to be ready.
  15. .com is preferred, but not a requirement. .co would worry me that it's so close that a lot of people would mess up and go to the .com instead. I could see other non-.com top level domains working, though. But, I also think we're likely to find a .com that we like.
  16. A few people have posted suggestions in the thread, so I'm hiding those as they occur, but I am still getting them! As I said above, better to PM me so someone else doesn't see your idea and buy it.
  17. SiouxFootball So this was just sent to us. If nothing else it maybe provides some levity. Cmon people, it's funny. https://t.co/7DS4HdvbJr 11/18/15, 3:36 PM
  18. Oh, and if anyone is looking for some Roughrider-related domain names, I can let them go cheap.
  19. Ah, but do you hate more than you hate Fighting Hawks? See how clever I am, unleashing it today?
  20. Even if we don't switch for a while, we should collect some ideas now so we can actually reserve the names. See my new name for this site thread.
  21. I guess it's time. Though I have a few in my pocket, let me start by soliciting ideas from the community. BUT, you want to do this right so the name is actually available to us: 1) Only suggest domain names that are available. You're not getting fightinghawksports.com, someone else did. I recommend searching here: http://www.internic.net/whois.html (if it returns a result, it's taken -- e.g. http://reports.internic.net/cgi/whois?whois_nic=siouxsports.com&type=domain ; if it says no match, it's available -- e.g. http://reports.internic.net/cgi/whois?whois_nic=xxsjelfkjsdlfakjdsf&type=domain ) 2) Make any such suggestions to me via private message. If you post something here, someone else could buy it.
  22. While everyone is distracted and/or traumatized by more noteworthy changes in UND athletics, here are the main three front pages in this site's new design that I've been threatening for years: Front page: http://siouxsports.com/?testNews tracker page: http://news.siouxsports.com/indextest.phpSocial media tracker page: http://social.siouxsports.com I hope to switch to them within days or weeks. It's going to take me a little while to get the social media tracker pulling in the right set of Fighting Hawks-tagged stuff, but I'm reasonably confident.
  23. Yeah, I'll have to get to work on that. All the particularly obvious domain names were taken by UND and speculators long ago, but there are lots of possibilities.
