  1. That's just one measure, and you have to believe that those students who apply at Notre Dame have already self-selected out a lot of riff raff...if i remember correctly the admissions stats there are pretty sick...like top 5% in your class and 30+ ACT...not saying it is the greatest university in the world, but it is definitely top 20 in the nation.

I'll razz 'em on a lot, but their academics are better than solid...

Didn't say they weren't better than solid--just not as elite as many like to portray. All top tier Universities and Colleges can claim their applicants self-select. But Columbia College, for example, had an admission rate of less than 9% a year or two ago. HYPS are lower. Students to all those schools self select, yet their admission rates are far lower than ND.

Not saying admission rates are a very good measure of the quality of education, either--I don't think they are. I have no complaints about the education UND gave me. If I could have learned more, it was because I was stupid or lazy or both. But when it comes to the kind of bragging rights that go with statistics, meaningful or not, there is a bit of a gap between ND and some of the schools they often liken themselves to.

  2. Notre Dame is too honorable to charge the siouxage for the use of the ND. In the past 4 or 5 years, the Notre Dame Hockey team has something like top 3 in wins in that span. Made it to the championship and played a close game against the very same Boston College that put up something like 5 or 6 goals up on the "other" UND in one period. Perhaps one day the University of North Dakota will be great again like the 50's or whenever you were good. A lot of similarities between UND hockey and Notre Dame football....at least the Irish have awesome academic standards....

Not exactly awesome. A 30% admission rate is good, but not even close to the elite schools Notre Dame supporters like to associate themselves with academically.

  3. This is the best post on Michaelson I've seen. The kid made a decision that worked for him and I hope it does work out for him (granted I hope he never wins a game against UND or sees the NCAA tourney). I hate going on these I have this friend and his uncles, 2nd cousins, roomate, said this "..." . Let us so a little respect to him and his family.

Well said. How about this. Michaelson is a good kid and a great recruit we did not have the fortune to get. Minnesota's gain and our loss.

But the minute he slithers into that maroon jersey, he's a lizard.

  4. Why are goal posts and cross bars called the goalies best friends? If the puck hits either it was not going in the net and does not count even as a shot on goal.

Goalies are strange and live in a world with different rules. You should not expect anything about them to make sense. Leave them alone to their posts, crossbars and other strange friends.

  5. Good times in Madtown! Looking back on it now, we really probably should have got our ass kicked or at least have received some verbal abuse. I've had nothing but good experiences in my three trips to Madison...other than the military base incident on the way home one time ;)

I'm a UND grad and Sioux fan who lives near Madison and goes to games there when I can. It's a great hockey atmosphere, even for Sioux fans, in my experience. And from my experience in both GF and Madison, most Wisconsin fans know their hockey too. I'll always root against them when they play the Sioux (or compete against them in any way), but they have a great hockey tradition and know how to have fun at the rink.

  6. From Brad's Blog

Hopefully Forbort and MacWilliam will be able to shake that illness soon. Tough break for Rowney. If it is a concussion (as rumored) let's hope it doesn't turn into a long-term situation.

Mono can be a real bugger to shake in a sport requiring top conditioning. Not the long lasting effects of a concussion, but sometimes just as troublesome, short term.

  7. This makes sense to me... and the playing time bit too.

It's no joke that Minneapolis is a bigger hockey market than Grand Forks despite hockey being the only act in town (basically).

Why? More people live there and there are more venues to showcase the sport (not just UMN). The big city appeal is definitely no joke. My brother got it big time when he moved from Fargo, ND to Evanston, IL to start college. It turned into 8 years in Chicago area. He was then urged to apply for internship and residency at the Mayo Clinic but he refused outright because he didn't want to live in a "town as small as" Rochester, MN. He now lives in Seattle, WA.

And tell me: If you were an "elite talent" given the option of going to two "showcase" hockey schools, which of the two would you choose: One in a small town where, on top of it not being a big city like MSP, you have to compete for ice time? Or stay in MSP with a program that may be struggling, but it is still an elite program and get less competition for ice time?

This isn't UND vs. LSSU here, folks.

And I still maintain (kicking a dead horse) that the problem in Minneapolis isn't Lucia. It's Hill.

Those are good observations, but things have changed since UND got the northern Minn kids who were comfortable with the small town venue and UM got the Edina kids. These kids now have to do so much to attain that level of skill that they are dreaming of the next step up and taking the necessary sacrifices from the time they are12. They travel constantly when they are in their early teens, live away from home in midsize towns like Lincoln or Green Bay when they are 17 and graduate from high school without their childhood friends. Many of them will pick the college team that best suits their dream of playing at the next level. I think collged D1 hockey is a dream, but it is not the last or biggest one. It evolves into the next level soon after they discover they can make the college cut. Parise did not come to UND for the culture--he came to be NHL ready as soon as possible. Parises are rare, but others who are good enough to have choices between D1 programs want to be on an NHL roster some day and the right college program might make a difference in whether they get there at all. Enough of them know the stories of guys like Dustin Penner to think it can happen to them.

    Ehh, maybe that's a crock.

  8. Boy, guess I started a discussion topic....wow.....

I thought Eidsness was good in the last game he played against Denver, the goals he gave up weren't his fault, and he gave the team a great chance to win the game. I'm guessing that Brad will get a start in Wisconsin and he needs to go out there and prove why he was the #1 guy the past two years.

Playing at the Kohl Center would be a good test for Dell. I've had to watch the Sioux fall to comebacks there a number of times--that crowd can really be a momentum factor. Since it's a home football weekend, the place will be a little drunker and rowdier, I would guess.

    Can't wait.

  9. Defensively we have issues. It has been present for a while now (years) that we struggle transitioning the puck and breaking out. We also struggle once the opponent establishes the forecheck and sets up. There needs to be some work done.

Frustrates me every year when our D have trouble on the first break-out pass under a decent forecheck. I know it is part of Hak's scheme to keep the puck on the perimeter inside the zone, but that winger halfway up along the boards usually always has company, and there's often someone in the passing lane in front of him. In the end, it wins games, that's been proven well enough, but it's still frustrating not to see a quick transition game, given the talent the Sioux have.

We play a lot of games on NHL ice, and that affects the amount of space on the breakout, but still . . . .

  10. Thank you very much,Jim. On fightingsioux.com,it keeps telling me I need premium to watch, but it is saying that when I am only trying to listen.

I cannot get the video no matter how many times I go round the circle. When I try to subscribe (after giving password info) it won't get past the screen where I select the package. jeez, am I that dumb?

  11. Anybody seen Harrison Aide from Bottineau play? He will be playing for the 15 Selects in NY next week, I think. His dad and three sisters were/are all superb athletes, and I know hockey is a passion for him.

  12. Careful now your starting to sound like an SCSU fan in the late '90s gloating about owning the Gophers, while forgetting your main objective.

Hanging banners is nice, but owning the gophers cures impotence.

  13. You're right. In my first post I should have said if he has interest. My point was never that the U can get anyone they want whenever they want. My only point was that if the U and Blais have mutual interest then they will find a way to get it done regardless of a recent extension.

Not out of the question. I see a trade sending Blais to UMinn for a half-dozen overrated Minnesota-born quitters and a blood-oath to end UND's season just once in the next five years.

  14. I know of this Lunsetter through a friend. Canadian roots. His second cousin (I don't remember his name) was from central Saskatchewan. North Battleford, I think. After high school, he decided to attend UND and try out for the hockey team. Apparently, he got cut pretty quickly, while some other Canadian players his age or older made the team. I think he tried out two years in a row, failed both times, and then left school. Pretty bitter about it. Since he didn't get a degree either, he ended up working as a cashier at a 7-eleven in St. Paul, where he stayed and started a family. He had a couple of kids, including a boy, who would sign up for summer hockey camps at UND--I guess trying to reclaim his father's honor. I heard that the kid was sent home from camp because his skills were just not there and the staff thought he might get hurt. Kind of lost track of the kid until he started showing up on USCHO a lot.

Lonetree! That's his name. Happy Lonetree. Nice enough people, but I guess they never quite got over that UND rejection.

At least that's what I recall.

  15. It's really nice to see LaPoint getting positive press. He still makes me nervous in the corners and along the Defensive endboards, but he's starting to look more like the player who was contributing so much offense in Green Bay.
