  1. Letter to the Herald, anyone?

I know, it was my idea but I'm really hoping someone who writes better (and frankly, has more time to write it than I do) will pick up that baton and run with it.  H

I'm a little surprised people are questioning the integrity of the committee members. If a fix was in, perhaps in the composition of the committee (such that one constituency was outnumbered), but the committee seriously debated the names and did their best to follow the process.

Dropping North Dakota was far from unanimous, and there were numerous attempts from the expected constituencies (athletes, students) to keep it alive.

I agree with you.  I may be frustrated with the results, but actually a couple of the final options really are just fine with me (but I fear at least one of them as well).  But based on what I have read I think the committee has done the best job they could given the process available to them.   I've been in a jury situation before, and on the surface we can make judgments about people and their commitment/intelligence, but what I learned is that when people are given responsibility, they typically will try to do the best they can.   We may not like the results, but I don't think it's because anyone in the committee was screwing the process or incompetent.  I just wish they had kept Bombers on the list (and it wasn't even one of my suggestions!).

With what is left I could deal with North Stars!  I hope your info is right and mine is not.

Same here.  I actually like the name but don't like the whole MN connection.  But I'd take that any day over Sundogs and Fighting Hawks.

  2. I really think the list of schools that have dropped native american nicknames and gone to some version of "xyz Hawks" needs to get more play in the public eye. Was that you, jdub27 that put that list together?

That's an eye opening list that basically says dropping your nickname and picking something with Hawks in it is like jumping over the cliff with the rest of the lemmings.

The only think it is better than is Sundogs.

  3. Hawks is just So unoriginal though.

In today's ncaa hockey game it's the UND Fighting Hawks VS the UML River Hawks.

I can only get so proud of a name knowing it's the same one as tons of other universities in this country.

Pretty much how I feel too.  Fighting Hawks isn't that bad of a nickname.  it's just that everyone else has a variety of it too.   Not my way of doing things.

  4. Kelley decides to un-retire?

"Big Cocks" makes a move up the leaderboard?

scpa0305 crashes the meeting, reveals he is actually a GFC grad and gets tossed from the meeting because he won't stop yelling "Go Ridas"! ;)

............am I close on any of these?

close?  Yes, to a nightmare scenario!

  5. My gut is that "North Dakota" stays on the short list (however many that is). And it will be the winner after a public vote, with Rough Riders being a distant but sizable runner up.  However, despite its popularity in the public voting, I don't see Kelley choosing "North Dakota," and, lest we forget, Kelley is the end-all-be-all final determiner in all of this. I don't see him picking it due to the myriad reasons that have been hashed and rehashed on here and in the media over the past few months, including its marketability disadvantages, the presumption that it provides a vacuum that would be filled by the banned nickname, and the sense that all it does is kick the can down the road a few more month, years, etc., preventing any kind of real resolution for the school, its student athletes and the new president.

Again, I could be totally wrong in all of this. I will be anxious (in the truest sense of the word) to see how this all plays out.

mksioux pretty much addressed this already but I'll echo the sentiment.   I think it would be foolish of Kelley to allow no nickname to remain an option if he would not intend to let it stand.   And I agree that it legitimately turns the whole process into a fraud if this option is left on the table throughout this process only to be killed by executive veto.    "no nickname" is different from other nickname suggestions in that it's really a different reality.   It is a vote for nothing rather than a vote for something tangible.  Therefore, still following the rules of the process, Kelley could have ruled "no nickname" as not an option at the beginning of the process.  He didn't and therefore he will, i believe, live with the consequences.   The only reason he won't is if during this whole process he's had a change of heart on whether it's smart to end up with "no nickname" and is just hoping evolution weeds eventually weeds out the option.

  6. This isn't a favorite Hakstol moment but I grabbed the first Hak thread I found without digging too far back.    Kind of interesting insight here considering the knock about Hakstol that he didn't change his style to stay current with the game

Aside from a driven nature, Hakstol is flexible in his coaching philosophies. He proved at North Dakota he is willing to adapt his systems.

"He's kind of evolved with the game," Mattson said. "When I first got there, [defensemen] would stay back and play defense first. Over the course of my career, it kind of evolved to where defensemen had to get active. I think the last two seasons we've had the highest-scoring defensive corps in the nation, and he really encourages that. He's always yelling at us to jump up in the play and be active, so I think he's going to bring that to the NHL."

  7. Well, there are always society's reaction that needs to be taken into account.  If you immediately go out and say this is an example of domestic radical Islamic terrorism you will suddenly have vigilantes all over the country on the watch for terror suspects and you can guess where that goes.   If you start off with the more conservative "lone gunman" you keep the panic point low while the facts are still being gathered.

I'm not sure what Obama's motives where here, but given what I know of the situation (albeit, not all that much) I would probably handle it this way.   There's always time to declare it was an act of domestic terrorism.   You can't step back from that if you were wrong, however.   It just wouldn't work.

  8. Honestly, I've been to Famous Dave's a couple of dozen times over the years here in the Cities.  While I would typically prefer to frequent the small, mom and pop BBQ joints (Big Daddy's is easily my favorite, but Ted Cook's and Caps are good options) I have found FD's to be more consistent in the quality of the food they serve.   I find it to be very good, and generally consistent.  I haven't had occasion to go there for a couple of years so maybe things have changed more recently, but consistency was one of the things I appreciated about FD's.

Maybe other stores outside of the metro area suffer, or maybe there has been a degradation in their quality in the last year or 2.  But I've always been favorably impressed.

  9. Not sure I will go as far as matching Fighting Sioux, but I do agree with right up there with it, or one of the few nickname options that has a chance to approach it. From the get go I've felt Roughriders has a chance to, over time, develop the evocative images that so drew us to the nickname we have so loved for so long. I am all for it.

  10. I don't like Sun Dogs as much as anyone but this wlole idea of a nickname instilling fear in opponents has me intrigued. Does that really even happen because of a nickname or is it the calibre of play from one's opponents that instills the fear or lack there of? I mean c'mon, Gophers? Jackrabbits? I'm shaking in my boots at the mere sound of them!

Exactly.   A nickname won't instill fear in opponents.   I think the value in a good nickname is it gives an identity that the fans of that team can rally around, or in current terms "they can identify as...." something they very much like, respect, feel proud of.

Part of that, as keikla says, is being proud of the imagery.   That's part of being proud of the association with the nickname/logo.

  11. Argument AGAINST Sundogs as the new nickname.

So I was talking with my wife about the nickname deal.   For context, here is a little information about my wife:

    Wife =

-Could barely care less about sports in general

-NDSU graduate but doesn't really follow her alma mater

-Could not care less about UND or NDSU rivalry

-Quit going to hockey games with me when I got in a fight with Goldie Gopher in the mid '90's (ok, it wasn't a real fight, but it was enough for her)

-We've been married for decades now, so I've learned a little about non-verbal communication cues

Ok, so we were talking about the nickname thing, and I listed off the final 7.

Let's just say, when you get the face she gave when "Sundogs" came up, you just don't do whatever that was you thought was a good idea.

    You just don't.

  12. They've arrested Ashley Hunter and charged him with 2 counts of murder.  Some may recognize the name from when he made national headlines for stabbing another guy for refusing to change positions during a 3-some a couple years ago.

seriously? That is one guy unclear on the concept....

  13. Looks like there were actually 3 captains and a couple of assistants back in 85-86.  If you want strange, there it is.

Berry says in the paper they have a bunch of rookies coming in, and rather than lay the burden of official leadership on 2-3 guys he thought there was value in naming several guys in those official leadership roles to help teach the new guys about Fighting Sioux hockey.  The voting apparently was very close among all of these guys, so it seems there's some good logic involved and I like the idea.
