  1. Apparently others outside the program drink the kool-aid as well:

    http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2015/04/10_another_one_that_got_away.php

The losses in the seasons' biggest games have been as heartbreaking as they have frequent. Moreover, North Dakota has rarely deserved its cruel fate. The most ardent believers of hockey's oldest, falsest maxims truly think the better team always wins. Hakstol's North Dakota sides have been hard done by a number of NCAA tournament results, though. This team has been good enough — and played well enough — to win a few national championships in his tenure, and few other teams have been a realistic contender annually as UND has under Hakstol.

  2. Danny Kristo weighs in on the Hakstol debate

    https://twitter.com/dkristo7/status/586558564589707264

I was reading this thread to see if anyone else had already posted this.   Guy has a little credibility, at least.   And basically says what a former player once told me about Hak.

If this isn't the most short-sighted and narrow-minded comment I've ever seen... :silly:

If you take out the first year he was there he had a record of 96-63 and made the playoffs all 3 of those years.

Why would you ignore the first year?  Because it was his first year as a head coach and that team was an absolute dumpster fire that would make the Flint City Tropics look like the New York Yankees.

Some simple digging reveals several reason why you can throw out that year:

    1. Hak didn't start the year as the head coach.  David Lohrei coached one game and then was replaced by Hakstol.  (That should tell you everything you need to know about Sioux City that year because coaches don't leave after one game very often)

    2. The fifth leading scorer on that team went on to score 9 points TOTAL in 4 years of college hockey (He was a forward).  The leading scorer went on to Bemidji State when they were in the NCHA (D-III).

    3. They went through 41 skaters and 7 goalies that year.  The Wild used 5 last year and everyone freaked out.

    4. The next year with a full offseason to prepare he went 35-18 and won Coach of the Year for the league.  That should tell you all you need to know about what people in the league thought of him.

There is a reason that everyone with actual hockey knowledge from Gasparini to Blais and from Parise to Kristo has lined up behind this guy in support.  They might know a little bit more than the bunch of whiny toddlers that keep showing up here.

We have out-shot the other team in 6 of the 7 Frozen Four loses that we have had under Hak so its not like he hasn't been getting the boys ready to play.  Goofy things can happen in a one game playoff.

This deserves more air time.  Thank you.  I was going to bring up a little of this, but you had far more knowledge to add than I could have.

Just ran through the first period again, keeping track of player names mentioned (by John Buccigross and Barry Melrose) for each team. Here are the totals:

    Boston University:

    Phelps 1  Moran 1  Roberto 4

    Grzelcyk 22  MacLeod 3

    Hickey 18  Fortunato 11

    Somerby 3  Diffley 3

    O'Connor 13

    North Dakota:

    Caggiula 15  Johnson 5  Parks 5

    Pattyn 9  N. Schmaltz 18  Murphy 8

    Chyzyk 2  St. Clair 2  Poolman 3

    O'Donnell 4  Gaarder 5  Poganski 0

    Thompson 5  J. Schmaltz 3

    Mattson 5  LaDue 8

    Ausmus 4  Stecher 6

    McIntyre 12

Total 1st period player names mentioned: Boston University 229, North Dakota 119.

    Discuss. :)

    Dave

I actually thought they were pretty fair.  They often commented on calls UND should have gotten, but didn't, etc.   I didn't pick up any real bias in watching the game.

  3. You know why he doesn't get full and unquestioned credit for his regular season wins vs. post season failures at North Dakota?  Because every coach before him did the exact same thing as far as wins go.  Its been 40 years since a coach really struggled at UND.

It's been a long time but not 40 years.   The early 1990's were a pretty tough time to be a fan IMO.

  4. Can the Hak lovers please stand up

They're all over the board. Can't you read?  Why am I replying to you?

I just hope that someday soon we can watch the team win it all - and dedicate the banner to all those teams that got oh-so-close since 2001 but didn't quite do it.

To the 2014 - 2015 team and coaching staff: I know this hurts you all more than it hurts the fans - and it hurts us pretty bad, so I can't even imagine how you must feel. Thank you for the good times this season.

    Fighting Sioux Forever.

    Amen

  5. I hope Stecher is back. He is a guy. Jordan Schmaltz is a non impact player, watching him for 3 years, it won't change next years outcome if he leaves early.

    I hope Zane is back.

I just don't understand how Murphy can be a top 6 forward in the post season having never scored a goal. If MacMillan doesn't get hurt he is not even in the line up so how is he a top 6, that being said I would hope he is on the outside looking in next year because he doesn't perform when it matters. (I know oxbow would agree with me)

I thought Murphy looked pretty good last night, and damn near scored a nice goal.   Am hoping that next year is a break out year for him.

  6. Its amazing how one player made BU good. UND had the chances Zane makes two more saves and the guys are playing for a title.

Yep, we're melting down here but the story of this game is a Hobey finalist goaltender that had a human-like night.  One of only 2-3 he's had all season, and he had it tonight.

It's unfortunate, and it sucks, but no one feels worse about it than him, I'm sure.  It's just too bad it went down this way.

  7. The team really does look great tonight. They have good spacing, are pinching at the right times, and are getting there passes through. They have been dominating possession since half way through the 1st period and have played a style that can win this game. A couple power play goals from bad calls and a couple soft goals have cost this team tonight. I don't put this on Hakstol at all.

    agreed

  8. This team was on it's heels the first 10 minutes.  Then they recover and dominate the next 20+ minutes.  Weak goaltending turns this from a 1-1 game into a 4-1 deficit.   It's !@#!$, but that's not the coach.  Coaching is more responsible for the recovery and better play the last 20+ minutes than it is for poor goaltending.

  9. I didn't give the Sioux a chance after the first 10 min but they did a good job of getting their skates under them.  They still seem to struggle with the puck, and the difference in these teams is that when the puck squirted through traffic the talented BU player was able to corral it on his backhand and score into the open net.   When that happened on our PP it slipped by Schmaltz before he noticed it....missed opportunity.

And Zane had to make that save.  Coaches talk about "timely saves".   That was a bogus penalty, and even more reason why Zane has to save that shot.

Fortunately there is a lot of game left, and if the Sioux keep this going they should have some chances to score and maybe tie it up.  Seems like it would be a great thing if we can stay out of the box going forward.

  10. Spot on.  I'd rather be big man on campus playing in front of large crowds vs riding a bus and playing in front of smaller crowds.

The largest part of my career has involved my success being dependant on the decisions that other people make.  More times than I would like to admit people made decisions that didn't seem logical to me, or that I would not have predicted based on what I knew.

What I learned over time is that people make decisions based on their own personal situations, not what seems logical to me.  Sometimes that means they really do make illogical decisions.  But most of the time that just means there are factors they are considering that I was not aware of, or variables that they put in a higher priority than I would.

In the end, people make the decisions they feel are the best for their personal situations, and if they don't make sense to an outsider, typically that means the outsider isn't factoring in the same variables and factors, or not weighting or prioritizing them the same way.

In my career, once I realized that, people suddenly didn't seem so stupid. (and yes, that's a shot at me).

  11. Its cause the coach lied.

He said the Fargo regional is not a neutral site.

It is in fact a neutral site.

What's he want, must declare what team you're cheering for before you can buy ticket to make sure its equal. Was there more UND fans there than any other team? Yes they were the hosts. Doesn't make it not a neutral site...UND is college hockey and with that comes a lot of jealousy.

it may have been a neutral site but it wasn't a neutral environment.   it's no different than UND fans (including me) who never bought the X as a neutral environment for the gophers for the Final Five.   That doesn't mean I was against the location, I actually loved it there.  But the realist in me said if there are 10,000 gopher fans in the building it's not "neutral".   Sioux fans flocked there was well but we never filled it like the gopher fans did when they were interested in the game.

There's no reason to apologize or be upset if an opposing coach says the regional wasn't a neutral site.   Hakstol himself (or was it players) said the fans gave the team extra energy.   That's the system, and UND landed that regional by following the rules.  Nothing to apologize for, and I didn't get the impression Pecknold was belly-aching either.  He was stating a simple fact.

And like he said, if he doesn't like it, then he should get a higher seed and a better chance of not having to travel so far from home.

UND should lock up a regional every other year at Scheels just like MN does at the X.

  12. Taking into account it must be unique, represent the college and the area, I submitted:

Airmen - thought this was a name that could work out, especially when I read the Air Force's Airman's Creed:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airman%27s_Creed  I think this would be quite fitting of what we want UND sports to represent.

Aeronauts - a very unique name.  I prefer Airmen much more, but was trying to find another name for "pilot" that was unique among college nicknames as Flyers is already taken.  I also like Aviators, but prefer these names.

    I really like Aeronauts
