I don't agree. Sooner or later a Sioux will win the award once again. In most years the competition for the finalists is pretty tough, and some deserving candidates might not win.

I wonder if the idea that he used UI stationary was meant to infer that he was providing an official position of the UI, or writing the letter with the backing of the UI? That would be worse than a couple of hundred bucks of postage/paper.

I had no illusions that ANYTHING I said would have any effect on Brand or the NCAA. But sometimes you need to feel that you at least said something. I think one point would be the Sports Illustrated poll, and the poll done by the university in Pennsylvania that show that the majority polled did not object. To say that there is no significant portion of American Indian population that do not object seems misleading to me. Now, we can argue the semantics of "favor" vs "do not object". And that could be valid.

I decided I needed to forward this message to Dr. Brand at the NCAA:

1. I thought Backes was not nearly as effective Saturday as he was Friday. 2. Kessel is scary good with the puck. However, from what I saw on TV I agree with many. He's trying to make the same moves as he enters the zone that he used to beat lesser, younger D with, and they're not working. However, sometimes he's talented enough to recover from that, and sometimes his talented linemates pick up the puck and do something with it, so some of the mistakes are glossed over. I think he was lucky to score on the penalty shot because the goalie had him, but didn't get his pad down. Kessel had enough space under the pad to slip in the puck. That said, when he got the puck with some space on the PP he was really scary. I've never seen a body so quick on the ice. And he is FAST. I expect he'll acclimate to what can and can't work at this level pretty quickly and then watch out.

Prpich would get his axx handed to him if he tried to take on Paukovich. Let's leave revenge to the scoreboard and Denny Green's high road. NDH, I hope you are right and the upperclassmen are prepping the rookies on what a big weekend this is. Not only is it Denver, a budding rivalry, but the WCHA opener, conference points, and all that encompasses. I like guys with Oshie's work ethic. That's the kind of player that can really spark the team in a tough series. I think I read that Denver has beaten the Fighting Sioux in 3 of 4 national championships, and in something like 5 straight games. It's time for the worm to turn.

Way to go, Jordan! Jordan came in as an unheralded recruit and has really developed into an outstanding goaltender. Does a Sioux head coach finally get some credit for the success of a goalie now?

There's more to life than just face-offs for a center, though. Maybe he's better at the other responsibilities.

My jaw dropped the one time on the pk where he stripped the puck from the gopher D at the blueline, then outraced him all the way to the goalie. However, he was stoned by Briggs.
-
What was I saying? You're right. They gave MN a game both nights. That 5-2 score was closer than it appeared. MN was fortunate to get very good tending from Briggs that night or it really would have been a barn-burner. I want to change my answer to: Mankato WILL give headaches to teams all season!
-
Kind of strange considering UND went on the road to UNH and took 3 points and didn't move up a notch. Mankato isn't in the top 15 and UNH is. That is a good example of why not to care about polls. About Mankato, I watched both games on TV and was fairly impressed. Their D isn't great, and their goaltending....well, the guys that play in goal aren't that good. They have some good offensive skill, can play very physical, and they can be very dangerous if given a chance. If Mankato gets solid goaltending, I think they will be a headache team all season in the WCHA.

Having never played the answer to this question might be, well, obvious to others.... I know the center and wings have their roles to play. However, if a wing is better at taking face-offs, how disruptive is it for the center to go over to the wing slot for the faceoff and the wing come in to take the faceoff and handle the center responsibilities for a few moments. I also realize off a face-off there are responsibilities but one would think that in the chaos of a freewheeling play the two would sort themselves back into their regular roles quite quickly. Anyone?

So Zach Jones is taking a few penalties. I think we're very lucky that our young D are apparently acclimating fairly quickly. I would have expected a lot more of this from all of them at this point. I wonder if the excellent play by others only makes Jones look worse than it is. I think he's going to be just fine. Each player comes into his own in his own time. Give him a chance to work through it.

I agree. I couldn't believe supposed intellectuals were spewing that crap when I read it.

I admire the Sioux warrior of the 1800's now as much as I ever did. This current mess changes nothing.

Got my T-Shirt today. Thank you, Emily!! They look great.

You know, without knowing what his situation is, I think it's best to leave out the speculation.
