Geez, haven't you been reading around here? I can remember stuff from high school, but last month? Come on....

During the Saturday night Sioux/gopher FSN broadcast Frank made a comment about how the Sioux had difficulty moving out of their own zone. Woog immediately responded that there was a good reason for it. 4 of the blueliners are 18 or younger, he said, and when you play against older, more experienced players it's going to cause some problems. Call it making an excuse if you want to, but Woog said it and that's good enough for me. Good stuff, jk. Anyone else think Motzko might be a better coach than Dahl?

I've watched him for 2 games on the tube and 1 in person the last couple of weeks and he's looked all right for a freshman D. He also appears to be playing with a little more authority than when I saw him on the tube earlier this season. His confidence appears to be growing (if one can make that assumption from watching someone play).

I watched the gophers score a lucky goal on Friday night on TV, where a shot attempted went off a CC skate straight to Wheeler. It looked like a sweet pass but it wasn't. I said to myself "when am I going to see the Sioux be a recipient of such good fortune?" Lo and behold it was just the following night, on TV, for Toew's goal.

Maybe "DISQALIFICATION'S" don't carry a one game suspension.

yes, on TV I didn't see Spirko throw 'em. He was getting hacked during that game, I noticed several times and it looked he was kind of targeted, like Oshie was in Mpls. I had initially forgotten about Oshie breaking up Finley early in the altercation, but now I remember it. He pushed Finley as hard as he pushed the Mav player. Yes, Oshie, once started, DID NOT want to quit. He had both guys on top of him (player and ref) and was still working on standing up. Amazing. Zajac is not a fighter. He proved that in Mpls and again here. No problem with that, as he still tried to protect his own guy. But I'll bet in a year or so if another Zajac is in the same situation the "protection" might be handled a bit differently. Last week Zajac was holding Chucko off from going after anyone, and finally taking on Oshie. This week he's trying to off-load Sparky, but he seems to try a more "passive restraint".

Reminds me of what Dahl's teams played like back in the late 1990's and early 2000's. No surprise, being they appear separated at birth.
-
The refs sometimes mix the guys up. Last Saturday's Sioux game at MN was a classic example. Anyone remember the scrum which ended up with 2 guys from each team getting double minors? Watkins was one of them, yet all he did was stand outside the scrum and watch. I watched it on replay several times. Plenty of other guys were locked up, but not Watkins. So they may have DQ'd the wrong guy.
-
Rankin definitely committed the first penalty on Spirko, tackling him into the boards. That much I remember clearly.
-
I thought it was Rankin that Sparky was wrestling with, but I could be wrong about that.
-
BTW, with all the grief that Kaip has gotten lately on these boards, I think it's fair to point out when he plays a solid game. I was at Friday's MN game, and watched Saturday's gopher and last night's game on TV. It looked like last night was Kaip's best performance of the games I saw. Keep it up! I'm wondering how the 3rd period scrum would have looked if Prpich and Kaip had been on the ice? Radke does seem to like the rough stuff as well.

Handy, are you taking notes?

Wouldn't be so bad to give Michigan a taste of "home cooking" at a regional....
-
Either way, Sioux-cia and you both (and anyone else involved) deserve props for taking the initiative to make this effort.
-
At first I would have assumed it to be a bad rumor, but the poster says that WDAY reported it. So maybe there's more to it. He sure committed early on, if so.

Just in from Sensers. Maybe others will have a different impression but what a fun game to watch this was for the first 2 periods! Up and down hockey, played with speed and aggressiveness. Not a lot of hits, but good action. I felt the Sioux had the better of the play, but Mankato had some chances as well, but Parise was up to the task. In those first 2 periods those watching were treated to some absolutely scintillating puck skills shown by Toews and Stafford. Toews absolutely blew Tormey away on his goal. Tormey was so burned he's applying aloe vera to his very private areas as we speak. Later, on a PP Toews did some dancing in small spaces that made me drop my jaw. Stafford as well did some amazing stuff. Wow. The Sioux played pretty well, though they had trouble getting the puck out of the zone up the left wall ALL night long. They never seemed to be able to get it out past the D. It cost the Sioux numerous opportunities against. Zach Jones played a good game, but he also seemed to struggle with moving the puck out of the zone. But he wasn't the only one. Spirko is SO much fun to watch. Wow. Then the 3rd period. The Sioux didn't seem to be playing as well in the 3rd. They were a little ragged, and again lost chances to effectively move the puck out of the zone caused problems and gave up chances. I think it was in the 3rd period, on one PK that Prpich took advantage of some lackadaisical play by Mankato players behing the Mav goal. The puck was sitting there and while they decided who was going to rush it up the ice, Prpich came screaming in and started playing a little tag with the puck behind the goal. He must have eaten up a good 10 seconds before the Mavs got control and moved the puck down. Not to be shown up Zajac came on the ice, followed the puck down behind the Mav net and put on an EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE display of "small area games", playing with the puck by himself for quite awhile before having it stripped from him. And actually, he lost control of it, it wasn't take away from him. Wow. Then the bad stuff. As the ragged play continued, Rankin, Spirko and Zajac chased a dumped puck behind the Sioux goal line. Rankin, as someone else described, horse-collared Spirko about 4 feet from the boards. He bent his head backwards while his lower body flipped into the boards. He layed there for just a moment, long enough to cause RWTD's heart to skip a beat. He started to get up as the play stopped for some reason and everyone converged. Radke gave Rankin a shove from behind, and somehow Rankin and Spirko got tied together. Zajac was trying to pull the bigger Rankin off of Sparky (this is all the best of my recollection) and another Mav player came in on Zajac. Radke started pulling on THAT guy. Meanwhile Finley had grabbed the first guy to the pile with 1 hand and skated him well off to the side. It appeared he was giving him a stern talking-to, and finished with a face wash. The camera then went back to Sparky and Rankin who were tied up in the dreaded double-death-head-lock on the ice. The refs were trying to pull them apart. Camera to Radke, who appeared to have seperated Zajac and the Mav. Radke appeared to be wanting to prove a point, and in a bit of scuffling Radke's right glove fell off. It did look accidental, but the Mav was scared Radke was going to poke him with it, and kept trying to tie up that sleeve, and Radke kept pulling his hand free. With his other he was holding the Mav's jersey at the collar. With that hand he was taking a few jabs at the guy. Camera to the bigger pile. Oshie and a Mav standing next to the Spirko pile. They are pretty much watching the other festivities, but the Mav doesn't like how Oshie's using his stick to block him off from the action. They begin to get interested in each other, trade some jabs with their stick, and maybe something was said because Oshie then snapped and frankly this looked like it was going to be the first REAL fight of the night. Both guys tied up and wrestled pretty good. It looked like both were trying to get the sweater up on the other. The ref jumped on top of them, which left Oshie on the bottom and in a tough spot, though it was humorous to see him still trying to stand up with both guys over the top of him. Strong guy.... Off to the box they go and the camera moves to Radke who apparently has been provoked or bored enough to where he decides to "go" and puts in 1-2 good rights into the Mav's face. He had the Mav's sweater up over his head and the Mav was locked up. The refs got them apart right away and the headless, bent-over Mav sweater skated over to the boards and lifted itself off and revealed a human with a cut lip. Like someone said, looked like the Mavs wanted to start something they didn't want to finish. I understand Radke's DQ. His glove was off and he threw a couple of punches. I've not seen a guy get a DQ (Spirko) before for wrestling. And really, it wasn't even wrestling. They were locked up and no one was doing much else. Not sure why Finley had to leave the ice. Other than a face wash I didn't see much that he did either. Someone mentioned whether these DQ's might be reviewed this week, but from what I read on GPL the week after Harrington's apparently bogus DQ, DQ cannot be reviewed. They are awarded at the discretion of the ref and the league cannot overturn them later. Bummer for Spirko. Great to get a sweep. Too bad that 3rd period had to mar an otherwise strong 5 straight periods of hockey. Too bad we will be missing a couple of players next Friday. Especially Spirko, who might be our most valuable forward.

TH with Oshie: Oshie says they were ready from the get go tonite, really wanted to play well all weekend. For the most part a complete game, but about 10 minutes in the 3rd. Says he's feeling a lot better physically and mentally, especially mentally. Feels he's back now. Says that he almost peeled away after passing the puck to Duncan because he didn't think there was any way Duncan could pass it back to him, but he did, right on the tape. Hak on: Says they gave up a couple of sloppy goals, but overall played well, and liked that some guys stood up for their teammates. Mankato had some early PP momentum. After their 2nd and 3rd PP they talked about cleaning up the PK which they did and pretty much shut them down the rest of the night. Young guys did a pretty good job tonite but the leaders, the big guns, really came through and led the way. Said Kaip had a tough night with some D zone face-offs and other things that didn't go right but overall that line did a good job tonite. Phil was a BIG part of a 6-1 lead, made some big PP saves that could have really changed the game. Too bad the other 2 goals had to go in to take away from the end result. Oshie was tenacious on the puck to outmuscle the bigger, older D to score his second goal. Attribute that makes him a special player.

Big blond haired guy? If so I think that's the guy my friends and I have nicknamed "Fan of the Game". He always gets screen time at the Final Five.

Yes, way to go SIOUX!!!!!!!! They proved me wrong. Now Radke tied up with a Mav. Finley and Cummings going. Kozek and McElvie....things on the edge of losing control, then apparently it dies down and the teams retire. If it's a game tomorrow like tonite, this could get ugly. I remember the Coaches show when Hak said he's heard from the players that the Mav's could bring a dirty game. Maybe we know what they were referring to. Regardless, the Mavs apparently played hard-nosed hockey to the end. Looks like our boys put something together from last weekend. I hope they can remember this recipe for tomorrow. Would be nice if Sconnie could bounce back. They only gave up 1 goal tonite, so that might give their goalie and their team some confidence. Love to hear about the spread of goals through the Sioux offense.

Mav player runs Jones. Kaip goes after the guy. Everyone tied up with someone. Prpich's tied up with Berge someone. TH says Mike is waiting to see if the officials are looking before throwing any. Kaip, Prpich and Smaby in the box with 3 Mavs go, one for running Jones.
-
Don't like to hear that. Hopefully they tighten it up and keep playing. Don't want to lose an edge before tomorrow.

Prpich feeds Fabian out front and Fabian pots it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Am wishing I'd have watched this game on TV.
