  1. What are the options?? IMO Bartels isn't a better one. Joe was not good last night but he was still better than any O lineman or anybody on the opposite side of the ball.

I agree with this. I was happy to see the coaches stick with Joe as long as they did. With zero running game and a marginal oline it is asking a lot of a freshman qb to throw it 50 times. He is going to make mistakes and I still believe Molberg is a better option right now being more mobile. More concerns for me than our qb.

  2. With the upgrade in facilities coming now is the time to open the check book and get some new blood at the top. If that guy wants to change assistants (more than likely) that's fine. If we don't find someone new we are spending 20 million on the IPF and will remain mediocre.

  3. This will be another test for the O and D lines. I get a little nervous when I hear this will be the best Oline we face this year and last year, even though we scored a ton of points it was very clear that Montana had a lot of talent in their front 7 of their defense. We need to run with our bigger defensive line we started using in the 2nd half vs. SDSU and our Oline needs to get healthy. Being down 2 starters isn't ideal.

  4. He did. Demler and Comes both left the team after 1 and 2 years respectively and Bradley only made it one year. There was a QB in each class (excluding a redshirt) in 2011. Two of those QB's graduated, 2 left the program. That is where the hole occured. And after how the last JuCo experience went, I see why Mussman didn't try again. A guy like Hanson is a very rare occurence.

Here's what the QB roster has looked like since 2009:

    2009

    Landry - Jr

    Goska - So

    Hendrickson - RFr

    Nichols - RFr

    Townsend - Fr

    2010

    Landry - Sr

    Goska - Jr

    Nichols - So

    Hendrickson - So

    Demler - Fr

    Comes - Fr

    2011

    Goska - Sr

    Hendrickson - Jr

    Bradley - So

    Comes - RFr

    2012

    B. Hanson - Sr

    Hendrickson - Sr

    Bartels - Fr

    J. Hanson - Fr

    Mollberg - Fr

    2013

    Bartels - RFr

    J. Hanson - RFr

    Mollberg - RFr

Riddle - Fr (has left team)

    Palendech - Fr

    QB's recruited by year:

    2009 - 1

    2010 - 2

    2011 - 0

    2012 - 3

    2013 - 2

    Thank you for posting this.

  5. Last year our DB's were greenhorns. We were giving you guys way too much room to work with. Many times they were lined up 8-10 yds from your receivers. We also had our LB's lined up out there on an island with your receivers too when we should have been playing in a nickle or dime package and they couldnt keep up.

Our defense was also on the field way too much last year and it showed in the 2nd half when you torched us. They wont be on the field as much as they were last year. This year our secondary has been playing very well. They've been going up against probably one of the best QB's in the conference this year in practice. I know its practice but still it carries over to the actual game. I was really impressed on how they played against App St granted they were without their best WR.

Alot of times when a team play Montana they lose the next week. There's always a let down. Ive seen it happen way too many times.

So your going to press our wrs on Saturday?

How good is the App St team you beat?

  6. I do not think that the injury will be that big of a game changer. I still see us losing big. Hope I am way off though.

Not sure who their backup is but he has put up some of the best overall qb numbers in fcs the last couple years and has started since he was a freshman. You don't just replace that.

  7. Joe just threw it up there and let Greg go get it. It's not a good habit but its a shot you should take from time to time with great WRs. I think mussman probably just doesn't want Joe to think that it will work out so well every time.

At the end of the day it was one hell of a throw and catch that kept us in the game.

Add that Joe had a SDSU defender on his back and another closing fast. It was a great throw and catch but if that gets picked that is one that the coach rewinds a couple times in the film room and says "What were you thinking here?" However, since it worked and gave a spark to the team, it was a great play.

  8. Defense didn't relax. Long pass to Hardin had defender with him and TD to Hardin was also decent coverage. Receiver and QB made great throw and catch. Defensive pressure on QB still there, Mollberg did better job of avoiding it. I dont think any coach would go into prevent when opposition has ball down by 21 in mid third quarter. SDSU didn't.

I agree with this. If you go back and watch the game the SDSU corners were still at times pressing our WRs in the 3rd quarter, they were still blitzing LBs and their safety's were still playing at their regular depth. Not once did they back off their DBs and start running some umbrella defense. The same routes were there that were there in the 1st and 2nd quarters, the throws got there and we didn't bail them out by dropping some easy ones like we did in the 1st half. We were playing with a sense of urgency and our offense was running at a quicker pace.

If I had more confidence in our defense a faster pace offense may be better suited for our talents. Unfortunately, I don't trust our defense would get off the field if we had a couple quick 3 and outs.

  9. Saturday the Grizzlies make their return to Grand Forks and will want revenge from the game last season. I have heard they are bringing a pretty good crowd with them again so it should be a pretty fun game inside the Alerus. Tailgating last season with the Grizz fans who made the trip was almost as fun as the game itself.

There are still a lot of questions after last weeks game that need to be answered about this North Dakota team. Who is at QB? Do any other RBs get some carries? Can our OL play better? Does the defense play with the effort from the last quarter and a half vs. SDSU? I'd like to think that there will be some shuffling of the depth chart based on the play of some guys on Saturday. What are everyone's thoughts?

Link from last years game for those that need a reminder.

  10. I didn't think either quarterback was all that marketable of difference. Both gave their guys good chances. I think the comeback had as much to do with an all of a sudden lack of drops and the defense deciding to not get completely manhandled in the 4th.

The spark in the defense was started when the offense got some momentum going again. We had lost it and the qb change sparked

The entire team. We'll find out next week if one guy has the "it" factor that motivates an entire team. That could be the biggest difference between the two.

  11. More like Stig wanted to see good his passing game is so he has something to use down the road if he gets behind, like at say Nebraska.

That is not UNDs fault. SDSU was still pressing our wrs. They didn't go into prevent like some want to believe. They still tried to run on 2nd and 3rd and shorts and couldn't convert.

The effort and fire our team had after Molberg came into the game was a night and day difference from the 2nd and 3rd quarters. I agree with what oxbow said earlier, the most frustrating thing about our team is the roller coaster in effort as these big games go on. Next week I need to see effort from start to finish and a team that took the half a game beat down they got yesterday personal.

  12. They didn't take a knee until the last play anyway. Zenner was running effectively on that last drive, and they chose to take a knee even though he only needed one yard to break the record.

They would have been 3rd and fifteen if that penalty is called not in position to force anything. Getting the ball back with two more minutes on the clock would have been huge. Not saying it changes anything but you can't argue the difference with a freshman qb at the helm.

  13. Here are some hard to swallow facts, UND Football will never be what it once was, Hockey has overtaken Grand Forks and will never relinquish it's grip. The program should have stayed at the DII level where we had success, there is no way that we can compete with the team to the south. We are kidding ourselves if we think we can. I also agree it is time to fire Mussman, his excuses are getting old.

Great first post by the way. How'd the d2 look at the dome yesterday.

I think that's called an opinion.

  15. Anyone know what conference these refs were from? They played a part in UND losing.

They made some poor calls but they didn't miss tackles, drop passes, turn the ball over or get out muscled for two and a half quarters up front.

  16. The refs sucked tonight. They missed calls for both teams. That first down pass that skipped to the WR, really? The missed delay of game before the very soft (albeit boneheaded) late hit out of bounds. The missed unnecessary roughness against UND on a punt coverage. And when they did call something they sounded befuddled by what they were attempting to say.

Players who didn't start but should have:

    Mike 'Big Snacks' Edwards

When he was at NT the run defense actually made some plays. At times he took a double team 5 yards into the backfield. He needs to start. No offense to Henson but he just isn't a D1 athlete. He may know what he's doing back he isn't physically capable of doing it. Mike is.

    Joe Mollberg

    Need I say more?

    Derrick Goard

He killed Zenner on a blitz. The poor guy landed on his numbers after Goard blew him up. Goard also sliced threw the line like his hair was on fire to stuff Zenner a couple times. He made a difference when he was in there and needs to play more.

Also Meindel had a bad first punt and responded with an absolute bomb. He will be a good one for sure.

When Edwards was playing NG Hensen moved to DE. There will be some new numbers in the starting line up next week.

  17. I think we have to take the ball first and try and get some early points if we get the option. If I was SDSU I would want to do the same and get our defense on the field to see what we have.
