Before NDSU and SDSU were rejected multiple times by the Big Sky, the bisonville board has a strong contingent of posters who despised the thought of the Summit. Did the Summit League take into account those feelings? Does the Summit League take into account forums on NDSU or SDSU boards where there fans are hoping to jump ship and move to the Missouri Valley? Allegiances run two ways. At this point, UND fans know that any autobid conference would be great. But the Summit isn't nirvana: every team in that league would jump at a better offer.

You're confusing accomplishment with media hype and attention. The NCAA dance is a billion dollar industry: every team gets hyped because CBS and ESPN want their investment paid off. If NDSU's women's soccer team or volleyball team won the national championship, that would far, far exceed anything this basketball team is doing or a UND men's hockey frozen four appearance. But, because women's soccer and volleyball don't get much if any hype, the nation yawns. Yet it would be a huge accomplishment. SDSU's women's volleyball, soccer and top 25 women's basketball teams have all made the NCAA field (and soccer actually won a game), so at this point, they are more accomplished than NDSU men's basketball, but just have had no media hype. Just based on the number of teams participating, UND winning a hockey national championship is equivalent to NDSU or UND making the Elite Eight in basketball. NDSU has a very good team, certainly top 100 in DI, and certainly deserves accolades, but hype does not equal accomplishment. As far as your argument that there is parity is college basketball: that's BS except for if you are a member of a BCS league or are Memphis.

Tournaments are a crapshoot, especially if the conference winner doesn't host. The Summit doesn't give the regular season conference winner home field. Valpo last decade and Oral Roberts recently have benefited from the location of the tournament. Oakland went to the NCAAs in 2005 from the Summit after a record of 13-19 (7-9 in the then Mid-Con). UMKC almost won the Summit tournament a few years ago after not even winning ten games. Losing teams have gone to the NCAA basketball tournament a number of times, and will again. Oakland in 2005 was the #65 seed and was the last Summit team to win, winning the play-in game. Valp in 1998 was the last Summit team to win a first-round game. Valpo in 1998 and Cleveland State in 1986 were the only Summit schools ever to make the Sweet Sixteen. No one can ever accuse MplsBison of groupthink. He was one of the few that wanted NDSU in the Summit, and Bisonville fans raged against him for not wanting the Big Sky. Apparently it is true, a prophet is despised (and banned) in his own town (Bisonville).

UND was in the College Division if the NCAA back in Phil's and Fitch's time. Most of the power teams in the former College Division are in DI now and have been for years. UND lost to Walt Frazier's Southern Illinois, which has since been to a number of Sweet Sixteens and at least one Elite Eight since. A large fraction of the today's mid-majors were formerly UND's peers in the College Division (much of the current Missouri Valley, Southern, Colonial, Sunbelt, Horizon, Big West, Big Sky as examples).

That's a horrible analogy: Kennesaw St would be hideous in DII now. They've lost all their talent since then and have gotten progressively worse. Findlay (32-0) is the top-rated DII men's team this years and would have won or been competitive in a number of lower DI conferences - including the Summit. That said, a DII team has to be exceptionally good to crack the DI top 100 (Findlay this year, Winona State of a few years ago.) "Good" DII teams perform about where UND did this year (~300 out of 347). Seattle and South Dakota were pretty decent teams last year in DII and, with almost the same players, are computer rated in the 50-60 percentile of DI schools.

With the loss of their seniors, the Bison RPI will drop them behind at least another 50 - 100 schools next year. For Bison fans to be proclaiming that somehow they've arrived, are setting themselves up for years of frustration. This run was set up by one year of great recruiting by Tim Miles - who is long gone. It could be twenty years before they go to the dance again. Enjoy it while its here, and stay just a little bit humble. It's interesting that Miles was able to recruit those players on the hope that they would be in the Big Sky and on the hope that the NCAA would repeal the new 13 year transition rule prohibiting new DI schools from the Big Dance. No Bison posters have ever denounced the ethics of those recruiting promises. For those seniors, glad it worked out. There's always been a few enlightened NDSU fans who support UND hockey, but the majority constantly knock it. Now, we can expect a Bisonville thread supporting UND hockey in the playoffs?

Actually, what Hammer wrote is accurate. Just the "fail" part is where I disagree. Can certainly understand why people took offense at Walaker's remarks, as many GF residents have heard the same words said in a purposely condescending or cruel way. Don't think Walaker meant it as such, but he used very poor word choices.

Agree, especially based on the NWS crest forecast. Fargo's 1997 flood was like two feet over the forecasted crest, while GF's final crest was five feet over the forecasted crest. If the forecasted crest for GF would have been 54 feet initially, the lower lying neighborhoods of the city would have been abandoned in a controlled manner, and a second line of dike defense built. The horrible forecast for GF made the two situations entirely different. Traditionally, the Red Lake River crests well after the Red River. In 1997, they both hit peak flows almost simultaneously, which was unprecedented. GF had to battle 110,000 cubic feet / sec, well over three times the amount of water Fargo faced (30,000 cfs). That said, I have heard Fargo acquaintances compliment themselves at "winning", and imply other remarks toward GF. Some of the strong responses to Walaker's comments on the GFHerald page suggests other GF residents have heard the same stuff from a small ignorant minority in the Gate City.

Looks as if the new TTU coach let go of the old assistants and hired herself a new set she knew from junior college ranks. Moffitt was at TTU for three years and the Texas Tech team is really young, so if TTU has success over the next few years, it would be due in large part to his recruiting.

Football: B The depth or capability were lacking at some key positions (LB, OL) when Lennon left. This coming year could be difficult - but after that UND ascends. From a financial standpoint, paying enough for key coaches to come here (and stay) may be major hurdle. Also, where's the indoor practice field. Men's basketball: B+ Jones is building for the long-term. With the youth next year, it will be difficult. Patience. Women's basketball: B The women seemed to revel in the challenge, instead of getting frustrated. That's a key. Do wish the recruiting geography would expand a little more - or get some of those Iowa State recruits from Minnesota. Adding a few more: Women's Hockey: A- Not really new to DI, but New coach, good direction Swimming: A Signficant accomplishments in CUSA swimming meet. Future score depends on new coach. With Woodside, Nelson, Winkelman, Moorman (?) having invested five years with only one shot at the tournament, it would have been almost tragic if they hadn't made good on their one shot. Last night was the first that I've seen these Bison play: Tveidt (sp) seemed like the player that most wanted the win. If NDSU and Oakland could combine their strengths, that team likely could have a top 30 potential, as NDSU really needs an inside presence that Oakland has. NDSU's going to have to shoot the lights out from 3-pt range to advance. Have respect for what Miles (especially) and their coaches have done. Living a couple of hours from Greensboro, have four tickets to that subregional. Kidded my brother (also a UND grad) a couple of months ago that we might end up watching NDSU there - not that I would cheer against them, unless their fans, seeing Kelly Green, start the Sioux S** garbage. Kansas State actually played at NDSU at couple of years ago - it was a two-for-one plus some other connection. Is it likely: no, but not impossible especially with lesser BSC schools like Washington State, Baylor, South Florida. (not that I expect them to show either)

With that schedule, USD may have a difficult time gaining a 5-5 record. Relative to USD's schedule, the UND/Central Arkansas game Nov 28th effectively gives UND two more weeks of practice. Nov 14th is too early to hang up the pads.

Deleted an earlier post which was based on hearsay. Just a comment that income disparities cause different perceptions of Fargo South versus North, Moorhead, or West Fargo, just as Red River has different public perceptions than Central or East Grand Forks. South and Red River tend to be viewed, however unfairly, as the North Dakota spoiled cake-eater equivalents to some of the wealthier Twin Cities suburban high schools. When Davies opens, it will be facing that issue, not South.

Thought Wes Porter's blog entry was outstanding. Imagine when DI-recruited players have been playing in the Princeton offense for three-five years. BTW, after a bad start and very young players, Denver's Princeton Offense is starting to click, too.
