Wichita State perspective on UNI dropping baseball
-
Northern Iowa Drops Baseball after '09 Season UNI is the state's second Division I school to drop baseball this decade after Iowa State did so in 2001. Vermont cuts Baseball/Softball as part of budget cuts

Conferences usually have a method of prorating revenue based on the teams participating. Non-football Big East schools do not receive any portion of TV football revenue. With the Big Ten Network and hockey, it would be more difficult to apportion earnings (depends on ratings, advertising sales for hockey etc.), but it is normal practice. The Big East managed to gather all the lacrosse-playing Big East schools under its own banner- effectively disowning lacrosse history - because the schools could make more money and be more dominant. Since the majority of Big East schools do not sponsor lacrosse, only the participating schools share the net revenue.

Know there's a lot of cynicism about Canadians schools joining the NCAA and playing DI hockey, but there continue to be media reports confirming it. In all likelihood, Bemidji and British Columbia will both be added to the WCHA, but not until the 2011-12 season. NCAA hockey will be wildly successful at UBC, even with major juniors, because Canadians always rally around their own when Canadian teams play hockey against "non-Canadians". It will hurt UND recruiting in BC and Alberta, but more interest throughout Canada may be focused on UND's program. Whatever league UBC is in, that league (not just UBC) could become the league of choice for Canadian recruits (even over a Big Ten conference). Feb 11th - UBC's likely move to NCAA [ ] - indicates my additions. There are no other western leagues in either men's volleyball or men's hockey. Mountain Pacific Sport Federation Men's Volleyball * Brigham Young * Cal State Northridge * Hawaii * Long Beach State * Pacific * Pepperdine * Stanford * UC Irvine * UCLA * UC San Diego * UC Santa Barbara * USC (like men's hockey, there is no sanctioned championship in DII for men's volleyball)

Big Ten Network turns profit, will become "significantly" profitable this year Hockey's going to be ruined by greed: The Big Ten Network needs programming and hockey programming could earn schools major $'s quickly. Penn State won't be joining the CCHA: Penn State authorizes study for 6000 seat hockey arena Notre Dame won't be staying in a CCHA without Mich/MSU/OSU: Notre Dame to construct 5000 seat hockey arena Quite possibly Minnesota has other motives than sincerity in it's sponsorship of Bemidji into the WCHA.

Seckar-Anderson finishing great career at UW-Oshkosh Good to see Dane had a fulfilling career. Interesting comments by him on DIII vs DII. A balance of personalities seems essential for a balanced team. When a mild-mannered coach has some decent players who were highly driven, the team chemistry seemed balanced. When a mild-mannered coach had great skilled players who have the same personality, team chemistry doesn't work.

The University of New Orleans (as well as the LSU system) will likely see an 18-30% cut in state budget allocation. With the UNO needing to add more sports to maintain DI status and satisfy the even stricter requirements for SunBelt membership, UNO may have a very difficult task staying DI. If UNO can't keep it's SunBelt membership (and Denver being asked to leave), Arkansas-Little Rock becomes the only school in the SunBelt without a football team. UALR has often been suggested as a decent fit for Summit membership - doubt UALR would leave unless forced. Up to 30% Budget Cut for LSU system

Considering that NDSU athletics doesn't have the finances to match Fargo's sales tax dollars on the FargoDome arena addition project (never mind adding millions to make the new arena ice-ready), imagine the uproar among hockey-haters if NDSU administrators now further deferred basketball improvements to pay the $1,000,000+ in hockey startup costs. And how Fargo / FargoDome officials, who they did everything within the law (and more?) to get them a basketball venue, would view an NDSU hockey program playing at the Urban Plains Center . At this time, an NDSU hockey venture would be a local political disaster. Ironic that the window has never ever been more open to them on the WCHA side. The status quo reigns - no hockey, comfortable seats, or watchable conditions while Fargo emergency rooms continue to encounter high numbers of heat stressed, bleacher-butt syndrome patients.

The OL depth and LB depth have been the foundation of the program. Now, it seems the skilled positions are the foundation. In the previous four recruiting class, nine recruited OL dropped out - almost two full sets. If Kelley is out, two full sets of LB's have also been lost from the program. The two JC transfers are already on campus (correct?), so they should be able to compete in spring drills. The problem with JC transfers at this late date is they'll only have August to adapt to the system.

First off, all of these are opinion questions attempting to get a conversation going. It's not like we're voting for a UND athletic Hall or Fame award. Second, most of the verbals to the 2008 class were made to Mussman, not Lennon. The whole nature of recruiting changed over these years, so comparing classes isn't really fair either, but important in understanding the current state of the UND football program. During 2004, NDSU and SDSU's impending transitions made it easier to compete against their full scholarships. By 2006, without the capability of offering full scholarships, the class size was way down and arguably the quality (are there any all-conference candidates in that class?). Don't have the data to prove it, but one of the reasons that SDSU seems to be so successful at the FCS level is their retention of players. They don't necessarily have the star-quality recruits that NDSU necessarily has had, but they have had good solid recruits that have been retained, giving them depth and experience everywhere. Defining overlooked traits tough for coaches. COLLEGE RECRUITING

The classes are listed in the next several postings. The attrition some of these classes has taken is rather amazing, especially 2003 and 2005. With 2006 being a smaller and weaker class, little wonder there have been holes to fill. Keeping and developing at least 75-80% of a class is really needed to build a solid FCS program. Send an email if any class is incorrect (bound to be several corrections). 2009 JC-Transfers Matt Moody - Linebacker Connor McKendry - Offensive line HS Signees Joe Kleason - Offensive lineman Mitch Overstreet - Tight end Seth Stanchik - Defensive lineman Blair Townsend - Quarterback Caleb Nelson - Offensive lineman Damon Andrews - Wide receiver/defensive back Cordero Finley - Linebacker Jay Jelinek - Running back Brock Lundeen - Defensive lineman Zebulon Miller - Kicker Dominique Bennett - Linebacker Marcus Binns - Running back Darren DeNeui - Tight end/defensive end Nick Doehling - Offensive lineman Matt Field - Offensive lineman Garrison Goodman - Linebacker Karl Hager - Wide receiver/defensive back Greg Hardin - Wide receiver Jacob Hoerchner - Offensive lineman Brian Otto – Linebacke Walk-ons (unconfirmed) Mike Nachtsheim (?) Houston Baptist Transition Time Reduced From 7 to 4 years With Houston Baptist now having full DI membership in 2011, they become an attractive target to conferences (including the Summit League.) Since Houston Baptist was transitioning from NAIA (but was formerly DI in the 70/80's), not sure why Utah Valley (was a JC) couldn't petition the NCAA and obtain full membership now.
