  1. Possibly more than half the states: Florida to Maine, + Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado: not sure about Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky UND started hockey more than 15 years before the NDHSAA sanctioned the sport. Opportunity knocks in men's college lacrosse because of Title IX considerations, especially for any school west of the Appalachians (only sponsor it: Ohio St, Notre Dame, Denver, Air Force, Detroit, Bellarmine) where so much of the lacrosse growth is. Adding men's lacrosse is about being ahead of the curve, being progressive as a university, attracting students that wouldn't otherwise come here (walk ons/partial scholarships from West Coast, Intermountain, Twin Cities, Canadian athletes), offering a sport that could provide revenue with existing facilities, offering a sport that few athletes in the West or Midwest have access to. In a number of Olympic sports, UND will never have any real chance. In lacrosse, UND could struggle at the beginning, but at least some fans (especially students and transplants) would get into it and UND would have a springtime showcase sport.
  2. The star player in the championship game for Cornell went to school at Holy Angels in Richfield (or is it Bloomington?).
  3. EWU in the Big Sky is not the only school that is facing major financial issues. The students at Sac St rejected an athletic student fee that Sac St badly needed. N Ariz has major budget issues for more than just one year. Idaho State's budget and enrollment have been taking hits (BYU-Idaho has been growing rapidly, sucking away ISU's "natural" student base in Eastern Idaho.) One or two year shortfalls in athletic financing may be bridged with fundraising and FBS game payouts. Longer term, the viability of the athletic departmnet becomes threatened without major donations.

  5. So what's your point, exactly? This was an isolated event of rage with one individual who was immediately kicked off the team, not a systemic situation with the entire Sioux football team. The point regarding the Bison players is that the DUI, marijuana use and dealing were apparently systemic to some its team members. Certainly much of the team had to be aware that marijuana dealing was ongoing, whether they bought it or not. It's no wonder why that team underperformed so badly last year. How much more is yet to be revealed? Which coaching staff has more or less admitted that they are out of touch with their players?
  6. KXMC-TV Minot on DII Move KFYR Report Does seem like a 16-team NSIC is likely, with Minot State and Sioux Falls being added. DII is only allowing 10 teams in per year, so there still may be some barriers. Always thought Minot State would be a natural for hockey. Now that they may be heading to DII they could sponsor it, if there was ever a league for them.
  7. That's part of my point: he knows exactly who's applied and doesn't seem to want the public to know. If the public knew the names, they urgency the adminstration says is needed in dropping the Sioux name would look ridiculous.
  8. Although it won't get the publicity of being 1 out of 65 teams in the dance, arguable this softball team has accomplished more than any other NDSU DI team. Never thought a Summit school would have a chance - a northern one at that. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/oth...113567328_x.htm
  9. What I can't believe is that Faison doesn't know the five other teams that have applied to the Summit. Either he's playing dumb or he hasn't bothered to make a few phone calls within the AD network to find out what's going on.
  10. Schools normally maintain ownership of non-current logos so ownership doesn't fall into other hands. In this case, highly doubt the logo would be sold or released.
  11. So has Denver applied to the Summit? GFH: Nickname Deadline
  12. Guess my mind runs countercurrent anyway, but personally think that this board decision increases the chance of retaining the Sioux name. A year ago I thought the name had no chance. If Standing Rock gets a referendum, it will pass. Both the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock councils will then have a lot of state and reservation pressure to change their stance or ruin their political careers. If the 2010 deadline remained, all the momentum of a Standing Rock vote would be lost. The 30 year agreement is also key: otherwise the name would always be in peril. The chances that the nickname standing October 1st are still slim, but it's a prudent move by the board. I also agree that there's leadership at UND who would prefer to have the name go away. If the name stays, it will be only because of Sioux warriors like Eunice Davidson or Sam DuPris that came through when it counted.

  14. Notre Dame wanted Rutgers, but signed a five year deal with UConn (two at meadowlands, three at South Bend). But that deal isn't about reaching the 15,000 ticket sales every year - it's about New York media coverage for both schools.
  15. Wyoming played a home game in Nashville against the Vols at the Titans stadium. La-Monroe has a multi-year deal with Arkansas to play a home and home. La-Monroe "hosts" Arkansas in Little Rock (which is the Razorbacks secondary home field after Fayetteville.) N Illinois hosted Iowa at Soldier Field. The MAC has hosted a few Big Ten teams at pro stadiums.
  16. If secondary tickets were sold for the Alerus ballrooms / adjoining beer gardens decked out with large screen TVs, the single 15,000 seat venue requirement would get trickier. Seems many people would rather mix and talk and watch the game as a secondary consideration.

  18. You're right. The timeline is a major problem for UBC. With the latest year delay in filing the NCAA paperwork, they'd still need at least until 2012-13 before begining DI play (they'd have to play at the DII level first, or keep hockey in the CIS before that time). Even then, they'd have to wait 2 more years before being playoff eligible. The major benefit of UBC would be millions of potential eyeballs it would bring to NCAA hockey and another outpost to expand western hockey. As far as voting, UNO is by far the least objectionable, UBC is the most interesting and has the most ardent backer (UAA and maybe DU and CC). BU only gets in because of the admission partner (UNO or UBC) - Bemidji doesn't have a chance partnered with NMU or MSU-Moorhead.
  19. UAA, CC, DU effectively call the shots on what second team will be added: those three votes block any expansion. UAA would no doubt strongly support UBC if given any option. Would oppose UNO if UBC was on the table. Denver and CC would support another true western school: UBC, UAA, CC, DU (as well as UAF) would be one school away from a true western conference (if a BTHC ever materialized). Du and CC would probably benefit more from UNO in the short term: but longer term their futures are more dependent on more hockey playing schools in the West. UBC has a much higher academic status than UNO: which matters to DU, CC, Minn and Wisconsin. UBC could allow Canada-wide WCHA telecasts on Canadian cable vs what UNO brings: $'s Without question, SCSU, MSUM, UMD, and MTU would much more favor UNO, but those schools would be by and large responsible for bringing in Bemidji despite UAA, CC, DU objections. Based on history, UND might be the favor UNO foremost for any possible WCHA expansion. Not sure how UND would view UBC either: but it would certainly further increase UND's recognition in Canada at the possible expense of recruiting. If UBC pulls the plug on an NCAA move this summer, it's all mute: UNO would be the choice.
  20. Isn't there a significant fee just for the application? If so, it makes no sense to apply without some type of assurance the application will be accepted. UBC is still out there, awaiting decisions this summer from the CIS on dual membership and from the NCAA on requiring American academic credentials. A UBC / Bemidji combo probably would get more support than an Omaha/Bemidji one, although both would get enough votes. NMU/Bemidji or MSU-M/Bemidji combos would not get enough support. MSU-Moorhead's best bet at a conference may be if the CCHA loses a team like Bowling Green or W Mich [which like BGU hasn't been investing much in hockey and has IA football and a declining Michigan economy to deal with], assuming UNO leaves and UAH is admitted. Even then, Niagara, Mercyhurst or Robert Morris might get more interest from the CCHA. If a BTHC ever formed, there would be much more opportunity. MSU-Moorhead
  21. DU and CC would likely vote for an Omaha / Bemidji combo, but if they vote in Bemidji first they've lost all their influence. After it's AD is installed, UNO will make a final decision later this summer. There's a very reasonable chance Bemidji won't have to wait long. If UNO moves, UAH likely gets a home in the CCHA.
