  1. You do realize that UND didn't have any power to decide. They are a tenant, not the owners of the facility. They had input, but the decision was made by the Alerus Center Commission, the body that runs the facility. The difference at USD is that they own their facility. They can do what they want. Since the Alerus Center is a multi-use facility owned by the city of Grand Forks, it isn't going to be as specifically UND as a facility like the Dakotadome.
  2. But you are also avoiding the other factor I brought up before. UND will be introducing a new nickname and logo in 2015. Maybe UND plans to use the new logo for football also. Or they want to leave the possibility open. After all, a lot of people don't like the interlocking ND logo since it is so similar to Notre Dame. If they put the ND logo into the turf it would be harder to switch logos in 3 years. I don't know if that factored into the discussions, but I would bet that it was at least discussed. And your scenario may or may not be possible depending on how the naming rights contract was written. It may be spelled out very specifically how the logo is displayed and where.
  3. I'm pretty sure that Spookie has nothing to do with UND other than supporting a single UND football player. Not even a regular fan of any UND sports. Seems like some pretty weak justification. Pretty standard for you though.
  4. I wonder why it matters if there is another example or not. If this is in the naming rights contract it has been there for more than a decade. The contract is for 20 years and it is more than 1/2 way through. They aren't likely to change the contract when it is more than 50% complete. So complaining about it isn't going to do anyone any good. Maybe they can change it for the next contract, which will go into effect right before the next round of turf is being discussed.
  5. Did you read the post I quoted? Obviously you didn't. It said "Those type of kids are steered, without exception, to Major Junior,". That is a patently false statement, as I pointed out in my post. I listed 7 exceptions, plus there were a few European players that I didn't list. So the post that said they play Major Junior without exception can't possibly be true. That's what happens when you make absolute statements, they can be very hard to support because there are usually exceptions of some kind. In my post I also said that the vast majority do play Major Juniors. That is a fact. No one is disputing it. But there are players that don't go through Major Juniors and still are top end talent. They are rare, but they do happen. If you could see through your Major Junior obsession you would see that.
  6. That sounds like a Bison fan, looking for someone else to blame when they do something wrong.
  7. Having the logo at midfield is probably part of the naming rights contract. I am pretty sure that the naming rights contract spells out where the name is displayed and how it is displayed. Therefore it is part of the revenue stream supporting the building and in turn benefiting UND.
  8. Gate City has a much smaller investment in the game. And the contract was much more recent so placement of the logos was probably discussed in the negotiations.. It isn't exactly a fair comparison. To be perfectly honest, I think that there will only be a very small minority of people that will really have an issue with whatever logo is at mid-field. It isn't going to be a big deal to the vast majority. I personally don't care. It isn't going to affect my life in any way. It isn't going to affect my enjoyment of the games. That's the reason I'm looking at the field, to watch the games. I don't care what logos are on the field. I find the entire issue pretty much irrelevant. The only reason I entered the discussion was to make sure that people understood some of the reasons. In fact, I find it very amusing that people are getting so wound up about this issue. Just like the uniform issue, I didn't have any idea that football fans were so caught up in fashion and color. As long as the field isn't embarrassing (like red or purple), and the uniforms match without having advertising on them, I show up to watch football. The rest is meaningless to me.
  9. A few other things to consider. If the Alerus Center had not been built, UND would have had to spend a lot of money upgrading Memorial Stadium. The city spent the money instead of UND. The indoor facility helps UND by taking weather out of the equation most of the time for games. Bad weather often limited crowds at Memorial. That doesn't happen at the Alerus Center. That should be additional dollars in the UND coffers. Also remember that other people use the football field. UND isn't the only football team that ever plays there. High school teams from both sides of the river use the field. Some conferences have used the field for a day. And playoffs for both North Dakota and Minnesota use the field every year. It is UND's home field, but it belongs to the city of Grand Forks.
  10. The logos represent dollars coming in to the Alerus Center each year. Those dollars keep costs down on the facility, which helps keep costs down for UND using the facility. They help keep the facility operating which allows UND to continue to use the facility. And they are a contractual reality of using the facility. UND doesn't own the facility, that is one of the big differences between Memorial and the Alerus Center. If you don't own the facility you can't dictate everything that happens. UND is a large tenant, but they are only a tenant. But the dollars that Alerus Financial pays in naming rights do indirectly benefit UND financially.
  11. Running Memorial Stadium and a Division II football program didn't cost nearly as much money either.
  12. As I pointed out before, UND is in the process of transitioning away from their nickname and logo. If the logos are sewn into the turf, and if UND will be choosing a new logo to implement in 2015, then it doesn't make any sense to put the ND logo into the turf. Especially at mid-field. Do you really want to be patching 3 year old turf if you don't have to? And my guess is that the naming rights contract with Alerus Financial probably listed the logo at mid-field, so the Alerus Center itself had already committed to that and couldn't change it to UND. Remember, that contract was signed more than 10 years ago. The Alerus Center can't do what they want if something is listed in a contract.
  13. James van Riemsdyk #2, Kyle Turris #3, Erik Johnson #1, Jonathan Toews #3, Jack Johnson #3, Rick DiPietro #1, Dany Heatley #3 Top 3 picks in the NHL draft that played college hockey from the past 15 years. It doesn't include foreign players from places like Sweden. It also doesn't include other top end talent drafted lower than top 3. There are exceptions to the Major Junior rule. Many people on this forum understand that the vast majority of top end talent will end up in Major Juniors. The recent fines to Windsor also prove that some players do get money under the table to play Major Juniors. There is a pretty good chance that other teams also give extras to players. Several decisions by players to go Major Junior after committing to college hockey have been rather suspicious, so it is natural that some people will question the decisions of all players that consider both. Seth Jones seemed to give both an honest look and strongly considered both. But after having several 1st round type players change their minds at the last minute to go Major Junior, college hockey fans will wonder about everyone.
  14. If people compete as individuals, it is considered an individual sport even if they also have team competition. I believe that these are the designations.
  15. More than a week ago. Story in the newspaper, several pages in the 2012 thread.
  16. The Grand Forks metro area (MSA) includes Grand Forks and Polk counties, and comes in a little under 100,000 people.
  17. UND and Sanford have had the discussions. Sanford wanted more than UND was willing to give in return for the money. As I mentioned above, one of the big things was that Sanford had to provide all treatment of athletes. Since the only Sanford facility in town is a small clinic in East Grand Forks, that would be difficult and very inconvenient for UND. Also, Sanford wanted to get involved with the UND Med school as a part of that donation. Sanford has also approached Altru about some kind of purchase or partnership. Altru told them that they wanted to retain independent, local control. Sanford does not just wait for others to approach them. They take an active role in expansion. They do not just wait for others to approach them. They have a plan for expansion and are following that plan.
  18. You are correct. The merger with Meritcare was supposed to result in headquarters split between Fargo and Sioux Falls.
  19. I think I will trust Mayo's opinion on what is a poor hospital and what is a good hospital. Mayo isn't going to align themselves with a poor hospital and let that hospital advertise that it is affiliated with Mayo. They especially wouldn't pick that hospital to be the first to officially align themselves with Mayo if it were a poor hospital. The Mayo affiliation speaks volumes all by itself. Sanford did make an offer to UND. I don't remember the details for sure, but I believe it was similar to what they have given NDSU. The offer included too many strings for UND. Among the strings were the fact that Sanford basically wanted to take over treating the UND athletes. That would mean transporting a lot of injured athletes to Fargo for treatment. They also wanted more naming rights than UND thought was worth the donation. The proposed donation may have had some strings for the Med school also. So, UND wasn't interested in the terms that Sanford was offering, whether Altru made a donation or not.
  20. They have until approximately December 12, 2012 (I would have to go look for the exact date). If they don't have the signatures by then they would have to start over.
  21. It was discussed briefly in another thread yesterday, http://forum.siouxsports.com/topic/16211-ncaa-hockey-scores-and-updates-non-sioux/page__st__1460, starting on post 1465.
  22. I had the same thought. I would be shocked if they didn't have a pretty accurate count, yet Mr. Johnson said that he thought they were close or maybe over like he didn't really know.
  23. From the Ralph Engelstad papers at the Chester Fritz Library, http://webapp.und.edu/dept/library/Collections/og1451.html. He left school after 2 years to play minor league hockey (and work construction in the summer). He went back to finish school after another 2 years. He got his degree. He was offered another pro contract, turned it down, and started his business.
  24. People get confused sometimes because he did leave school for a while to go play pro hockey. He went back to school to get his degree when he realized that he wasn't going to make the NHL. But he always said that his education at UND was very important in his business success.
  25. Ralph got his degree in Commerce in 1954.
