SBoHE votes to move ahead with nickname retirement
82SiouxGuy replied to fightingsioux4life's topic in UND Nickname
Get over yourself. As others have stated, saying that those people know nothing about college athletics is not an insult. Saying that you know more than they do about college athletics isn't an insult (maybe?). I'm pretty sure I have heard quotes from Eunice Davidson saying she doesn't know a lot about college sports. They're people, and they have never had anything to do with college sports, so it isn't a shock that they wouldn't know everything about college sports. But believing that they know more about college sports than people that work in college sports is an insult to the people that work in college sports. -

And what do Archie Fool Bear, Eunice Davidson, Frank Black Cloud, etc. know about college athletics and how they operate? Absolutely nothing. They've proven it over and over again. Even you know more about college athletics than all of them put together, and that isn't saying much. So none of their explanations mean anything. -
The EERC wanted the space where the old Ralph sits, but from what I was told it sounds like it will go to the IPF. But I haven't seen the actual maps of the property to know that for sure.

There has been a small department using the front part of the building, and the rest was used for storage. I believe that the storage is now empty. The department is being moved to a different building. They were originally going to be out in March, but renovation on their new space has taken longer than planned. I believe they will be moved some time this summer, maybe July.

It doesn't make NDSU look bad. It doesn't make UND look bad. And it's a minor blip for the NCAA. Someone at the NCAA made a mistake, and the fact is that neither UND nor NDSU is a major player in collegiate sports. People need to get over these stupid little things that really don't mean anything in the big scheme of life.

He's young, it'll probably go right over his head.

The contract was up for bids. As far as I know, nothing has been announced yet. But Midco Sports Network is advertising for staff needed to handle college and high school sports out of Grand Forks. So my guess is that they will be handling the broadcasts this year.

I thought I had heard that Preston Tescher would be going to U Mary.

Nothing is ever EXACTLY the same. Each year is different, each day is different, each minute is different. Players change, coaches change, rules change, everything changes. Grow up and quit whining. -

You are one of the rudest people on this forum. You have been calling people names for years. You somehow believe that we care what you think, and you continually keep repeating your selfishness over and over again even when you know that not 1 single person agrees with you. We don't care that you're angry. The athletic department belongs to the people of North Dakota, not to you. You're acting like a spoiled child. Get over yourself and act like an adult for a change. -
No, I think you missed his point. His point was that if you would ever decide to make that decision, he would support it and hope that you would follow through. There are others on the board that would also support that decision if you decided to follow through.

This is from the NCAA web site, showing the 7 hockey title games and all of the runner-up games through 2000. Where exactly does it say Fighting Sioux? It says that North Dakota played in those games, as in the University of. Why do they use the school name? Because that is the important part of the indentification. This is the same program that will be going forward. You have some idiotic beleif that they aren't the same program because of a name change. That belief belongs to a minority of a minority of a minority of people. You aren't going to sell it to us, so why do you keep trying? It really is a good thing that these forums are mainly anonymous when you continually espouse theories like this. -

You just keep believing that as you walk away. The real supporters of the University of North Dakota will continue to buy tickets, make donations, and make sure the school has an opportunity to succeed in Division I. I'm not sure who this new UND team is that you speak of, we will be supporting the athletic program that won 7 National titles in men's hockey, 1 National title in Division II football, 3 National titles in Division II women's basketball and a lot of other hardware over the years. -

They were happy to play for the University of North Dakota, one of the top hockey programs in college hockey. Not one of them would have refused to play for UND if the name were something different. -

I always said that donations would not go down significantly even if the name were changed. So far no reports of major changes. The Spirit Campaign has been pretty successful. There may be individuals that decide to not make donations. But, as I said, so far it hasn't been a problem. -

Obviously we can add sales to the things you know very little about. They weren't begging for you business. It is standard operating procedure to send out 1 or more notices after the deadline to see if someone just forgot, didn't get the notices, might have changed their mind, etc. That is part of sales, keep asking for the sale. The number of people that will give up their tickets isn't going to be nearly as large as you think. More than 67% in the state agreed to retire the name. A significant portion of the rest will still buy tickets and go to games. You probably aren't the only one, but you are part of a very small minority. -

Sales of merchandise will drop for a little while. Luckily, they made a killing during the past 3 years. And that number is only a small part of the revenue for the athletic department, probably averages about $200,000 per year over the past decade. That's a little over 1% of the athletic department budget, and it won't all go away. Plenty of people will buy stuff with just North Dakota on it. Sales of apparel does not drive fan interest. Actually, fan interest drives apparel sales. Fan interest will actually increase with all sports entering new conferences in the next 2 years. And being successful will keep fans interested. That is the big motivator for people to attend games and buy merchandise, the success of the programs. It also helps attract athletes. Athletes are not attracted by nicknames or logos. Fan interest is a smaller part of attracting athletes. Success or the chance of success will attract athletes much more than the number of people wearing the jerseys or even sitting in the stands. You are absolutely clueless about the situation. Attendance at hockey games will stay about the same, most games will be sold out. Attendance at football and basketball will probably go up this year. It has nothing to do with the nickname, it has to do with joining the Big Sky. Only a small number of people will actually stop going to games because of the nickname change, we hope that you are one of them. The Sky is the limit with the UND athletic program now that the sanctions are being lifted and UND is going to be finished with the transition period. -
You make up some stat and you think a bunch of people are going to waste time engaging you on the topic? I'll give you this much. UND isn't among the big time college team programs. UND would probably fit in a second level of college team programs. But it doesn't fit in with the BCS level schools which would be considered the big time college programs. It was probably the biggest of the schools that lost their Native American nickname because of the NCAA policy. But bigger schools like Stanford and Oklahoma have given up Native American nicknames. And Illinois is the biggest school that had to make a change of SOMETHING because of the NCAA policy. Illinois had to quit using Native American imagery, the biggest being their mascot Chief Illiniwek. So UND isn't the biggest college sports program affected by the NCAA Native American policy.

Remind us again how many goals the nickname has scored. Or how many saves. Or how many touchdowns. Or interceptions. Or points in basketball. Or rebounds. Etc.... The nickname being retired has nothing to do with the quality of performance by the athletes. -
The NCHC is a totally new conference in a new building, so I don't see how they could bring any of the WCHA ticket records along. I don't believe that the WCHA has announced their tournament plans, but since the Big 10 is going to be using the X it's doubtful that the WCHA will be there. So I think you're going to have to start over.

Only football has the FCS (formerly known as D IAA) designation. Every other sport at UND is now competing with the top schools for the same National titles. UND probably won't be competing for many of those National titles, but they are competing at the same level. UND would have to beat the best in that sport at the college level to win a National title. The rest of the sports are not at a D IAA level.

The Standing Rock Tribal Council has been strongly against the nickname for at least 20 years. Those are the people that count since they make the decisions. If the rest of the reservation had a real problem with that stance, they have had plenty of opportunities to make changes on the Tribal Council. Even though the Tribal Council has changed members over that 20 years, they have remained strongly against the nickname. It is the same thing as if the US government took a position on the issue. It doesn't matter if the rest of the country had the opposing view, as long as the small group known as the United States Congress plus the President take a position, it is the official position of the country. What don't you get about that?

My point is that all NDSU fans talk about is football. And winning football titles. In every forum, whether it is a football forum or not. Then telling UND fans that the hockey titles don't really count because they don't believe that hockey isn't as important a sport as football. Even though Division I hockey is the highest level of hockey played in college and many Division I hockey players go on and play in the NHL, the highest level of hockey in the world. And my problem is NDSU fans talking smack or continually trying to correct UND fans to the NDSU way of thinking on a UND sports forum. If you want to talk UND sports, I don't have a problem. I get tired of trying to discuss UND sports and having NDSU coming in to "correct" UND fans. I don't see the reverse happening on Bville. There aren't a lot of UND fans going there to "correct" NDSU fans to the UND way of thinking.

I have been told that Ralph was working on the issue while he was still around. He realized that the NCAA was going to make a move at some point, probably after the first NCAA study was released in 1998. He went to Florida to explore the relationship between Florida State and the Seminoles because it was obvious that it was much better than UND and the Sioux. He brought those findings back to UND and gave them some recommendations. UND didn't follow through on all of those recommendations. No one knows if things would have changed if they had or not. Standing Rock has been very strong in their desire to get rid of the name for 20 years, but it might have made a difference at Spirit Lake, especially during the initial appeal process. The person I talked to said that Ralph would have remained a strong Fighting Sioux supporter as long as possible. But this person was pretty sure that he would have supported a change at the point that it was going to hurt the athletic program. Ralph really believed that his education at UND was very important in his business success. The hockey program was the vehicle that got him to UND. And Grand Forks gave him his start on the way to a successful business career. He really wanted to support the hockey program, the University and the Grand Forks region with the building. So my contact was pretty sure that Ralph would have supported retiring the nickname before the sanctions went into effect. This person also said that it was impossible to know for sure what Ralph would have done.

And 9 out of 10 times that NDSU sports fans talk about sports they go to the National titles that NDSU has won in football. It doesn't matter what sport is being discussed, NDSU fans take it to football. In the process they try to tell everyone how much superior that NDSU is because of all the football titles that NDSU has won. Because football is the only sport that counts. Then they put down the UND hockey titles because it is a "niche" or "regional" sport, unlike football which is a "national" sport. What is even funnier is that quite a few NDSU fans come to a UND sports forum to talk about all the football titles that NDSU has won, while not very many UND fans go to the NDSU sports forum to talk about the UND hockey titles.
