Wal-Mart proposing second Grand Forks location
82SiouxGuy replied to fightingsioux4life's topic in Community
There are serious conversations happening about the 47th Street interchange. An interchange at Merrifield Road, 1 mile south of 47th, has been on the books for quite a while. The plan was to divert truck traffic over a new Red River bridge to decrease truck traffic through town. The conversation now is whether they should move that back and go after the 47th Street now, whether they should plan both of them, or if they can get away with doing the Merrifield Road now and 47th later. There are pros and cons on all options. But there is serious interest in developing the outlet mall idea. The local MPO is looking at all options and I believe they are planning to make a recommendation later this year. -
Wal-Mart proposing second Grand Forks location

Have you been to any retail store or restaurant in Grand Forks on a weekend? They are all packed. The Canadian traffic is huge and probably isn't going to decrease any time soon. The new higher limits on taking goods back to Canada might actually increase the retail business in Grand Forks. Duluth doesn't have a city the size of Winnipeg close enough to come down and shop. -
They waited to do the install because the building was booked every weekend through Memorial Day. Summer is the slow time for convention centers and big facilities. They had to totally create a new pit to store the turf, which meant tearing out a lot of concrete at the south end of the building. That couldn't be done until they had free time on the schedule. I don't know if they had the new logo or not, but UND has been a major part of the entire turf project so I would be surprised if they didn't have the new logo on it.

This points out that sometimes people get too hung up on titles. Games occur in years that your team doesn't win a title. Titles don't tell the entire story for a program. UND and NDSU played more than 100 games. Between the 2 schools, they won 51 NCC titles, and they shared some of those.(5 I believe). But that means neither school won the title in more than 50 years (more than 1/2 the years) that the schools played games. So determining who was the better team over time can't just count the years where they won titles, you have to count the other years, too. Otherwise you are throwing out more than half the years the programs existed.
-
And yet, UND still won more games head to head against NDSU. So NDSU must have been really bad for quite a few years. But thanks again for trying to deflect the conversation.
-
Which has absolutely nothing to do with who has the better team in most seasons. Those are 2 completely different discussions. You are trying to change the discussion because you lose on the present discussion.
-
And your statement was just trying to deflect the conversation away from the fact that UND has won more games when the teams have played head to head.
-
Another troll trying to change the discussion. The original discussion started with people talking about a specific game between UND and NDSU. CMSioux stated that UND was the better team that game, and in the majority of the games played between the 2 teams. Johnnyboy tried to deflect the conversation by bringing up National Championships, something totally different from what was being discussed. I pointed out the head to head record between the 2 schools, which proves CMSioux's point. Now you try to deflect with your absurd statement. The discussion was about competition between the 2 schools, so proving that UND has had more success in that competition has nothing to do with your delusion.
-
He made a factual statement. You tried to deflect from it. Just like you are trying to deflect by bringing up the Gophers. Then you tried to change the discussion so that you could highlight what you wanted to highlight and take attention away from UND's success against your herd.
-
The original statement was this: Your response was this, which really doesn't have anything to do with the original statement: Therefore, pointing out that UND has the better record in head to head competition, which proves the original post, is a correct statement. Talking about National Championships is a totally different discussion. Nice of you to try and change the subject when your team looks bad. Very trollish behavior.

The new logo is out, http://bigskyconf.com/news/2012/7/12/GEN_0712120514.aspx.

The color will look different depending on the material. It will look different on gloss paper compared to matte. It is going to be almost impossible to get a helmet to look exactly the same color as a jersey. The new helmet color is closer to the 347 than the old one.
-
Add Tony Esposito to the list.
-
He looked huge at the spring game. He is much heavier than 210. He is going to be tough for any D-back to handle, and may be too fast for most linebackers.
-
It's a much higher level than I have, too.
-
I don't think he meant the job.

Using history from 30 years ago, when one program was slumping and the other was enjoying large success is more than a bit skewed. Yet many people at Bville still base most of their opinion on what happened in the 80's. UND will get plenty of people to show up when the team is good and they have something to play for. History has proven that point in football, basketball and hockey. Don't worry, the chances are pretty good that whenever and wherever UND and NDSU end up playing, it will be a tight and entertaining game.

Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a Democrat. They were related, but not the same guy. I hope you aren't a history major at SU.

Again I'll ask, do you actually know that it is a fiscal disaster or is this just your impression? Do you know that it costs that much more than any of the other sports not named basketball, football or men's hockey? Have you seen a breakdown on costs and revenues by sport? The women's hockey team may take in less than half of the ticket revenue and none of the concession sales DIRECTLY. But the athletic department gets all profits from REA. So if the women's hockey team is helping pay the bills at REA through ticket sales revenue and concession sales, then it may be helping the athletic department indirectly. That number would probably be hard to quantify. My entire point is that just making a statement, like saying that women's hockey is a fiscal disaster, is easy to say. But I would prefer to get some facts and figures to prove it one way or the other rather than just accept the broad, sweeping generalization.
-
Disaster is a strong word. Do you know that women's hockey is that much worse than swimming and diving, or soccer or track and field or any other sport other than the major sports? Women's hockey does attract more attention than most of the Olympic sports. People do attend the games. Players from the team were on Olympic teams for multiple countries. So there is some PR value. Does it attract some donors? I have no idea about the balance sheet for hockey, but I'm not going to assume that it is a fiscal disaster. Everyone assumes that hockey is so expensive, and it is more expensive than many other sports. I have a brother with a boy that plays hockey and a girl that dances. He says that they spend more money on dancing than they do on hockey, and that includes a lot of travel expenses for hockey tournaments. That is at youth levels, not the collegiate level. But maybe the expenses for some of the other sports add up to numbers in the same range as women's hockey. It would be interesting to see a breakdown. But even if it is expensive, as tSic notes, the program serves several purposes including meeting Title IX standards. And it is a program that has a chance to compete for National Championships. So it is important to the athletic department as a whole.
-
Does wrestling attract a lot of fans? Does it sell a lot of tickets? Ticket sales can help offset some of those expenses.
-
Funny, it's usually a Bison fan that brings up the former NDSU president.

Actually, it would be hard to prove either way. Different programs playing different competition. No way to actually prove your assertion. And if a team from today would beat a team from years ago it does prove they are better. That is how you determine who is better, by determining who would win the game. That is the biggest problem with comparing teams or players from different eras. The game changes and the players keep getting bigger and faster. It is impossible to really have a fair comparison. You best bet is to compare how they did against other players or teams from the same era. How did the Steelers from the 70's compare against the league during the 70's versus how the Steelers of today compare to the NFL of today. How did Walker compare with other quarterbacks at the same level during the same years versus how Freund compared to other quarterbacks at his level during his years. Go ahead and do the math on that and then you can come back and argue with some ammunition. Right now you sound like a typical Bison fan trying to blow your own horn on someone else's board.

Scholarship numbers mean that more teams are competitive. It also means that there are fewer weak teams. And it doesn't say anything about how talented the players are. Players are bigger and faster now than they were 30 years ago. More DII players are making it to the NFL. The top DII teams of today would probably be competitive with the teams from the 80's, whether you and the faithful at Bville would believe it or not. But you just keep trying to spin things your way as we all know that you will.
