Bob is right. Popularity of the major sports has fluctuated up and down based in large part on the success the teams are having at the time. Hockey was more popular than football in much of the 80's (football was up and down depending on the year). It had reversed by the early to mid 90's as Bob mentioned. Both were very popular the late 90's to the early 2000's. Football has regressed since the transition started. Basketball has also had periods of being very popular and other periods when it has been less popular. And you can see the same thing happen at many other schools as teams get successful or have hard times.

I think that this has happened multiple times in baseball. Usually it's when a player is traded for a player to be named later or for future considerations. Should have just looked this up right away:

From Independent minor league baseball in 2008:

This may not be totally accurate, but it should be close. I scanned the schedule posted on undsports.com year by year to find the results. This list includes all games against current NCHC teams since Hakstol became the head coach, including all tournaments, with the exception of this seasons games. You can add them in yourself if you are interested. St. Cloud 23-11-7 Duluth 20-8-3 Colorado College 14-11-1 Denver 16-15-2 UNO 5-3 Miami 1-0-1 Western Michigan 1-0-0 Totals 80-48-14 This includes a total record of 12-5 against these teams in conference or national tournaments. Records against current NCHC teams by year 04-05 7-8-1 05-06 11-5 06-07 7-3-3 07-08 9-5-2 08-09 6-4-3 09-10 10-7-1 10-11 12-5-1 11-12 10-5 12-13 8-6-3

UND 10 penalties for 86 yards, NAU 11 penalties for 125 yards UND penalties included 5 penalties for 5 yards each, 2 holding penalties for 10 yards each, 2 pass interference penalties of 12 yards and 14 yards, and 1 personal foul for 15 yards. Each team was also called for an unsportsmanlike penalty on the same play so they were offsetting and not counted in the totals. It looks like the officials really liked to call pass interference. NAU had 4 pass interference penalties along with 2 personal fouls and a roughing the passer.

Obviously you have had problems with professional people and it still bothers you. Actually, you were the one that brought my acting like a professional into the discussion in a different thread. You didn't like it when I spoke like a professional. You wanted me to talk more like one of the guys. Sorry, I am who I am and this is it. I'm not going to change just because some anonymous person on the internet doesn't like it. And I'm not going to change because you keep coming after me. It is my opinion that there is some group think going on here. Remember, I get to have an opinion on a forum. There is definitely piling on that happens here. It doesn't have to be your opinion. But you don't get to tell me not to have an opinion. You obviously haven't paid much attention, you just keep looking for places to attack me. I have posted very little in the Fire Muss threads. When I have it is usually when I have been directly addressed or to throw in my 2 cents on a topic like getting better results at a restaurant by being nice rather than acting like a fool. I don't remember ever telling anyone that they can't have an opinion either way about whether Mussman should be fired or not. I haven't even said whether I agree or disagree with the idea. As I posted earlier, you might want to just put me on Ignore if it bothers you so much. It doesn't matter how much you keep attacking me, I'm not going anywhere. I actually ignore most of your posts unless you address me correctly. I know that I am going to disagree with most of your posts and that you are mainly going to complain about things rather than add anything that I consider positive to the discussion. So I usually just don't read the posts. Try it, it might keep your blood pressure down.

Someone said that people have a right to bitch and talk bleep about UND football just like they should do if they get a bad meal or bad service at a nice restaurant. I said that they would get better results by being polite and talking to a manager at a restaurant rather than "bitching" about "!@#!$". BJC said "but this is a bulletin board/forum". And I said that using decorum would still get better results than bitching. At that point we weren't even talking about Mussman or the football program. And we weren't talking about you. My point was that in my opinion you get better results in an adult, professional world when you act like a professional adult. If you act like a child or a !@#!$! you get far worse results. Maybe you were confused by the word decorum. You really seem to have a problem with people that try to act professionally and with decorum. Does that follow through to your real life, too? Have you had bad experiences with professional people? Or do I confuse you with the big words? If you don't like what I post I have a solution for you, don't read it. Use the Ignore feature. By the way, group think addresses the idea that most of the people in a group start thinking alike and try to eliminate opposing viewpoints. Whether I agree with UND on issues or not has nothing to do with group think. Here are a couple of definitions for you.
-
I've said many times that you don't get results from posting on internet forums. If you have a real complaint, or a real question, go to the people that actually can control the situation or provide the answer. People that think they are actually accomplishing anything by posting on this, or any other forum, are just plain wrong. But I think you will get better results if you are polite and professional rather than acting like a child. That's what I was talking about in the restaurant example.
-
So, no one is allowed to have an opinion that doesn't agree with you. There sure seems to be a lot of group think going on here. I stated my opinions and I wasn't responding to you. Or are you one of those morons that think it is perfectly acceptable to go to a coaches house to put up signs or vandalize?
-
It doesn't matter. Using some decorum will get better results in most cases than bitching, demanding or using bad language. And his example used a restaurant so I responded by using a restaurant example. Showing up on a coaches front lawn shouldn't even be considered.
-
Did you let Neulion know that you had a problem? They can't look for a problem unless people let them know about it.
-
That's too easy, bisonation.com. You're welcome.

Wow, what a follow-up. Not accurate, but quite witty.

Most NDSUAAS fans seem to think that the school exists basically for football.
-
That sounds like something that a sullen teenager would say when they're proven wrong. It must not be fun when the folks at SiouxSports know more about your school than you do. And tSic is right, it does seem to sum up the approach of the NDSUAAS football team and its' fans toward the laws of North Dakota. As long as the NDSUAAS football team wins, the rest just doesn't matter.
-
I bet that the football team could get more than 25,000 NDSUAAS student signatures if they had the right incentive.
-
Isn't it sad that NDSUAAS fans have to come to a UND sports forum to learn the proper name of their school?
-
With Fox Sports North, a regional sports broadcaster that broadcasts a lot of University of Minnesota sports, not just hockey? A regional sports channel that is headquartered in Minneapolis, the same city where the University of Minnesota is located? The University of Minnesota, a school that has at least 3 times as many graduates as UND in their home market (probably many more times)? Fox Sports North is going to take U of M over UND 10 out of 10 times.
-
Actually, according to the North Dakota Century Code the official name of the school is North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Science, http://www.legis.nd.gov/cencode/t15c12.pdf?20131029210109. The Century Code is a compilation of all laws passed by the North Dakota Legislature, and shows all that have been repealed. NDSU is the shortened version, not the actual full name. This has been discussed before, you really should try to keep up.
-
And there must not be anything good to talk about for NDSUAAS fans since they keep coming over to SiouxSports.com to defend their school against any perceived slight. I use the proper name, also.
-
Bitching about things doesn't get you as far as being polite and giving honest feedback. If you walked into a nice restaurant and started bitching or demanding that the cook gets fired you aren't going to get nearly the same reaction from management as if you politely asked to talk with the manager and explained what was wrong. You are more likely to have someone spit in your drink or your food if you take that attitude. "Bitching" about "!@#!$" is not a good way to handle problems.
-
I think you can add that by becoming a contender for Big Sky championships annually the team would also become a contender for a national championship on a regular basis. I believe that this is also a priority for the program.

I have season tickets and have missed 2 or 3 home games since Muss took over. As a matter of fact, I have had season tickets since they moved into the Alerus Center. And I have been attending UND games since the 1970's. The only significant game I remember missing in the past several years is the South Dakota game 2 years ago when UND came from behind to win. UND hired a coach with no head coaching experience. That may or may not have been a good decision. It normally takes time for the coach to learn how to be the head coach. My favorite example is Bill Belichick. People thought he couldn't be a head coach after his experience in Cleveland. How's he done since then? Same with Pete Carroll. His early experience as a head coach was not good, but he has done OK since then. It often takes several years to learn the position and it takes patience. Fans are not usually in a good position to know whether the coach is actually learning and improving. Athletic Directors are in a better position because they work with the coach on a regular basis. Fans don't have the interaction and are just watching from a distance. Fans also don't get to see what happens behind closed doors or in practice every day. That's why I trust the AD's decisions, especially when I have watched the AD make plenty of other good decisions. UND has had several other factors that have made things difficult, some factors that many refuse to acknowledge. The talent level on the team was down when Lennon left. Recruiting was made more difficult through the transition because of the nickname debate and the threat of not getting into a conference. Dale Lennon said that the debate was affecting recruits that he talked to. Others reported the same thing. Yet, some on this board have said that it shouldn't have affected recruiting. The vote that decided the issue was held just over 16 months ago. Was it any coincidence that the best recruiting classes appear to have come during the past 2 years when UND seemed to have found a conference home and the nickname debate was settled? Having the SU's almost through transition as UND and USD were just starting gave the SU's a leg up on recruiting. Their success has helped them maintain that advantage. That advantage has been more apparent in the traditional recruiting area in this region. That takes time to overcome. Getting highly recruited guys like Mollberg tell me that UND has made progress in this area. I have been disappointed in the results this year also. I was not surprised by losing to SDSU, the Montana schools and Eastern Washington. I thought that there was a decent chance to win 1 or 2 of those, but felt that UND was probably going to be underdogs in all of them. I feel that UND had enough talent on the field to beat SDSU and EWU. They just made too many mistakes and took too many penalties. Those issues can often be corrected, although it usually doesn't happen overnight. The defense has made progress through the season. The tackling has improved and they are allowing fewer big plays. The problem has now become the lack of offense. It has been a major factor in losing the past 3 games. That and some big mistakes on special teams like the punt team issues this week and fumbling punt returns. At this point I will not be surprised if Mussman is fired, or if he stays. And I will support either decision if Faison has good reasons for his decision. We are discussing a game, played by college athletes. This isn't life or death. Winning is important, but it isn't the only thing. Running a good program and graduating quality student-athletes should be the first goal of the program. Winning and representing the University well are next. Fans and butts in seats are after that. Those are the areas that I think Faison will use to make his decision. I agree with CMSioux, I don't think that the constant negativity adds anything to the team and that it can be detrimental. Discussing actual issues like missing tackles, lack of blocking, mental mistakes, etc. is one thing. Demanding that coaches be fired after the 3rd game of the season is something completely different. The only time I would support something like that is if there are other issues that need to be dealt with like off field issues or conduct detrimental to the school. This has not been a problem with Mussman. That is why I have not been part of the lynching party that has taken place on these forums the past several months.
