Because they were asked to do it. Groups from both reservations visited campus and the arena in the last year. One question was repeated multiple times. (I am paraphrasing) "You have flags up from the United States, Canada and the state flag of North Dakota. If you respect us as you keep saying, why don't you have our flags in the arena?" REA agreed that they should do that, so they are. Jody Hodgeson from REA was just on Mac Talk on KNOX Radio discussing this.

First, Siouxmama is female, so sir would be the wrong salutation. She has explained many times that she is originally from the DL area. My guess is that her question was more about whether you thought it appropriate for the SLT "landmark" to be put up in town at that major intersection rather than having anything to do with who paid for it.

He was fired months ago.

I agree with mksioux, this is an example that is similar to the UND problem. The difference between you and me is that I am a fan of the University of North Dakota athletic teams. The Fighting Sioux nickname and logo are great, probably the best in all of sports. But I am a fan of the players, coaches and teams, not a nickname. If the nickname goes away the players, coaches and teams will continue on. The program will go on. The UND hockey team will still beat up on the Minnesota Gophers hockey team. The football team will chase down the Coyotes of the University of South Dakota. I will keep my season tickets for football and hockey and attend basketball or volleyball games when I have a chance. The only difference would be that we might call them something different.

Yes the nickname has changed at the University of North Dakota. The original nickname was Flickertails. The name was changed more than 70 years ago, and at a time when they didn't have a lot of logo clothing so I doubt that anyone has a sweatshirt from that time. But there is an example of change in the past. And the logos from before the geometric logo are not officially available as a part of the University of North Dakota. I don't even know if the geometric logo is available anywhere. However, I do have a hockey jersey with that logo and wear it to games on a regular basis. I also have a jersey and other clothing with the current logo, the interlocking ND logo and probably the eternal flame UND logo. The fact that people are going to be offended by the current logo even if a new name and logo are chosen is beside the point (and not even closely related to the topic I was discussing). They are offended now and will be then. And the fact that one person proposed banning people wearing a Sioux sweatshirt is an overreaction by a zealot. It would be almost impossible to regulate and probably isn't going to happen at an arena with those same logos still in place. And watch me as I wear my Fighting Sioux hockey jerseys to games for many years. My reference to evolution was the fact that personnel, buildings, policies and other parts of the Athletic Department change over time. The department is not static. Evolution can be forced, it is an adaptation to outside influences. So changing the nickname, if it happens, will be a part of the evolution of the Athletic Department. That is true even if it is a revolutionary change.

I disagree with your entire premise. The example that you use of the Wild and the North Stars is totally different from what may happen with the University of North Dakota. As you said, the Wild and the North Stars were two completely different organizations. The only thing they have/had in common is the state of Minnesota. That would not be the case with UND. The UND Athletic Department will remain the same except for the label used to identify them. For example, UND has used 3 different logos in the past 20 years for the athletic program. A new nickname and/or logo would just be a further evolution of the program. Changes are continuously being made within the organization, but the entity of UND Athletics has continued. And they will continue whether the nickname is changed or not. I support the University of North Dakota and UND Athletics and will continue to support them if they end up changing the name. I may not like the change, but I will adapt.

I think that this was a late addition to the schedule. I heard that it was just confirmed in the last week or 2.

It is part of the 125th Celebration. Here is a link to the schedule.

From Brad's blog: And it is on Sept. 28.

Single game tickets will go on sale Saturday morning. I think that the prices AZSioux listed are right for 2008. Some of the games, like Minnesota, will go very quickly.

I basically had the same reaction. You can't tell which way he's spinning things. My guess is that he has proposed some kind of compromise that he hopes will save a little good will with the large group of UND people that support the nickname and logo.

I wondered how long it would take for that to happen.

I don't know if this is a compliment for Cal Poly or a shot at Notre Dame. Unfortunately, Cal Poly missed the field goal which would have given them the win tonight. Montana wins 30-28.

Kevin Fee had it in his blog this afternoon also.

Sam Houston plays at Kansas on Sept 20, so they may not want another big game right before their conference season. But they would be much more desirable to NMSU than a transition team.

It would be great to add a game, especially a quality game. But I would be very surprised to see a game added to the schedule after the season starts.

Buffalo bidding as US host for 2011 World Juniors

The goal of these outside events is to make a profit after paying for staff time, marketing and all other expenses. That profit goes back to UND Athletics to help pay for staff salaries and scholarships. That is what Ralph envisioned when he built the facility. And it works. The REA made a profit on the last World Juniors. They have 2 concerts scheduled for this fall that will do very well financially. The REA didn't return much money to the athletic department the first few years, but that has changed, especially since Mr. Hodgson took the reins. If they didn't do outside events there would be no profits that could be turned over to the athletic department, they would have to live off just the revenue from Sioux sports. -
Since it was sold out I would guess that they did as much advertising as they needed to do. Actually, I did see a little advertising but I don't think they needed to do much.

And call it an evening with a specialty spoken word record from early 1974, Gordon Sinclair reciting "The Americans: A Canadian's Opinion". I think it's interesting how history tends to repeat itself.
-
Let's mix in a little early 70's country with Ray Price singing "For the Good Times".

Since we have trouble with Q I am getting creative. Here is Sly and the Family Stone doing a cover version of Que Sera from 1974.

From 1970, The Pipkins performing "Gimme Dat Ding".

You got me with that one, I don't remember it at all. How about Les Crane - Desiderata.
