I am not an expert on this subject but have paid attention at least a little bit. I am pretty sure that the NA programs at UND are not required by any government. Otherwise there would be more schools with comparable programs. I believe that at least most of the programs are federally funded. This funding makes them break even or profitable for UND. UND could cut the programs whenever the funding contracts run out. But they would lose the funding and probably lose the students, neither of which is really desirable. I am also pretty sure that there are few, if any, NA students that get free everything. I have no idea what the statistics are for financial assistance for NA students versus any other student population. I would guess that a higher percentage of NA students get some kind of financial help than the average small town North Dakota kid. But the myth that all NA students get everything paid for really needs to stop.

It was covered last page in posts 702 and 705

The web site says that he played in 2 games. He had 0 points, was a +2 and had 4 penalty minutes. He has not appeared in any of the 3 playoff games.
-
I saw that he was on the roster also so I figured they may have done that to give the younger players some more playing time.
-
He is listed on the roster they have on their web site. I would guess that he is a healthy scratch.

I tried another slightly different version for you. I put the arrow on the N since it stands for North.

And yet another GF Herald story about the issue. This one looks at some of the arguments from both sides.

The latest stunt by the nickname opponents may be the most outrageous of all time. They don't care whether it's true or not, they just want to make the claim for the shock value.

No, that's not what I am saying. Like brianvf I became a fan because of living in the Grand Forks area as a kid, following the home team and going to school at UND. But I now support the entire school and its athletic teams. I know something about the history of the organization, both the academic side and the athletic side. I know people that work there and know about some of the people that made the place special to so many. I know the dedication that both staff and athletes have to excellence. I know the dedication that the alumni have to supporting the school and its athletic department. I have a history with the school and with the teams (or athletes) that represent the school. The University of North Dakota as a school and organization is important to me and I am a fan of its athletes and athletic teams. What those athletic teams are called is just a small part of the equation to me. I love the nickname and love the fact that it is unique. I don't think that it is hostile or abusive in any way. But IF the nickname is changed for any reason I will still support the school, the people and the athletic teams. You seem to be totally invested in the name. Not all of us are. We are invested in the school or the history or in specific athletes or specific teams or memories of specific events or any number of other elements or combination of elements. The name may be important to us, but it is not the be all or end all of our support for the teams or athletes that represent the University of North Dakota.

DaveK, I know that your position makes sense to you but it doesn't make sense to most people. Again, your description of the Minnesota Twins moving to Florida and becoming the Florida Twins is a totally different situation than a school changing their sports nickname. In your scenario you are taking the entire franchise from one location to another. Most of the people will remain the same, most of the players will remain the same, as will the history of the franchise. One real life example would be the Los Angeles Lakers. They were the Minneapolis Lakers and moved to LA about 1960, but they still recognize the championships they won during the 1950's while they were in Minneapolis. But it doesn't describe the situation that UND may face in the next couple of years. How about this for a question. Let's say you are a fan of the Minnesota Twins. What would you do if the Minnesota Twins and the Florida Marlins decided to swap nicknames? They would become the Minnesota Marlins and the Florida Twins. After all, everyone knows that the best marlin fishing is in the land of 10,000 lakes. Which team would you be a fan of under those conditions? I'm guessing that you would become a fan of the Florida Twins. After all, it's the name that is most important to you. Me, I stay a fan of the Minnesota team. I have been for about 40 years. I worry less about what they're called than supporting the team. That's why I will stay a fan of the University of North Dakota sports teams no matter what they're called in the future. Unless they go back to Flickertails, I don't know if I could get behind that. ;-)

"Cake eater" is a derisive term applied by blue collar kids to the privileged upper middle class. I haven't seen a definite origin, but some people go back to the story of Marie Antoinette saying, "Let them eat cake". It is used in a lot of different places. In the Twin Cities, Edina kids have been called cake eaters for a long time because that has been known as the "rich" suburb for quite a while. And that would probably make Joe Gleason a cake eater too.

Tribe members have gotten the nickname issue on the April ballot on the Spirit Lake Reservation.

Here are the mp3's, I don't know if they will work for you as a ringtone or not.

Hak was on the coaches show with Tim and Swyg this week and said that the "Minnesota Rule" is still in effect. I am pretty sure that he said it is written into the Final 5 contract with FSN and the X. The contract has 2 or 3 years to go. The teams should know when they will play by the end of this weekend. My guess is that if Minnesota is in the Thursday game they will put that winner up against #1 on Friday night with 2 and 3 on Friday afternoon.
-
Hakstol said that it would be presented after the end of the series. He doesn't want the team distracted by it. So it will probably be brought out on the ice after the game tonight if the Sioux win, or wait until tomorrow night it the Huskies manage to win tonight.

Genoway for Saturday
-
Most of your questions could be answered by going to Ticketmaster.com. Tickets are available by package or by single game, the single game tickets went on sale recently. Ticket prices vary by location and by game. The single game tickets look like they are all $13 for the upper levels for all games. The rest of the single game tickets are $18 for Thursday, $33 for Friday afternoon, $23 for Saturday afternoon and $43 for Friday and Saturday evenings. Ticket packages are $66 for upper deck and $151 for all others. Of course you have to add Ticketmaster fees to all of these prices. Ticket availability per game depends on who is playing. Minnesota games sometimes sell out, the others usually don't. But even the sold out games you can usually find a ticket. A few years ago I had a free ticket for the UND game on Friday afternoon so I didn't try to buy for Friday night and Saturday until Friday night. I walked up and was told that Friday night was sold out (Minnesota was playing). They had plenty of tickets for both Saturday games. I bought them and walked outside where I was offered a single seat on the lower level for face value before I could walk half the length of the building. Plenty of others were selling also. So you can always find a seat.

DYB Leaves the Herald

I have a pair of tickets available for the playoff series this weekend against Michigan Tech. The seats are at the top of Section 306 which is the end that the Sioux shoot in the 1st and 3rd periods. The seats are in the back row of the section. I would prefer to sell the pair as a package for the weekend (2 or 3 games depending on the results). Will take $80 for the whole works. If I don't find any takers by Thursday morning I will sell them on a per game basis, but not interested in doing that at this time. The tickets are in Grand Forks and we can arrange delivery. Send me a PM if you are interested in the tickets, the 1st $80 takes them.

Maybe the fact that the Athletic Director spent so many years working in New Mexico makes a difference.
-
Or you could go to the original, which probably did come out on 8 track.

Tickets are sold. Thank you.
