They played several games against good competition before anyone else in college hockey had a practice. They should be ahead of everyone. The other teams will probably catch up some. But Tech may also be better than in past years.

Several people thought it would be great if UND released the name and logo or if they lost the copyrights. Others pointed out that UND doesn't want to do that for several reasons. As someone noted, the settlement requires they keep control unless they release to a tribe. But releasing them would give people a chance to continue making merchandise, which would keep the name and logo alive longer. This would make it more difficult for a new name and logo to gain acceptance. And that would keep the name issue and the arguments active much longer than if the name and logo just disappear. So UND will do everything they can to keep control of the name and logo so that they don't continue to get regular usage.

And this woman.

That issue was discussed in another thread.

Lennon didn't plan to stay at UND for the rest of his career. He was looking at a 5 year transition period with the big unknown of not knowing who his boss was going to be. Montana State would have been a 1/2 step up to an established FCS program. Southern Illinois was a full step up to a FCS contender. His next step will be FBS.
-
I agree with you. They decided to hire from within because they were right in the middle of recruiting season when Lennon left. An inexperienced coach doesn't get nearly as much money as someone with a proven track record. I think that UND has proven they will pay if they think it's worth it.

In past games, the player you pick is the one you get whether they play or not. It doesn't matter if they get hurt or if the coach just decides to sit them. That's probably why a lot of people pick late in the week. Quite a few people used to pick a game at a time, but several of us missed getting picks in for the second game on a weekend so now most people pick both games for the weekend right away.

My point is that it is not an easy task to go from one of the boys to the head guy, especially if you don't have experience as a head guy. Lots of people in lots of industries struggle with that change all of the time. It is one of the struggles of promoting from within.

The bolded item actually has been proposed, and hasn't gone very far. The people that proposed it were using Nebraska as an example, I believe they are the only unicameral legislature in the country.

They were both in favor of keeping the name, but anyone that was paying attention knew that the chances of keeping it were very small. The decision still had to go through Standing Rock and they were strongly against it.

I do believe that changing coaches can be a big factor. It adds one more variable to the mix. I had forgotten that Bohl was new also. One difference I should have pointed out was that the coach UND hired did not have experience at a higher level, while Bohl had experience working at the top level of college football. That experience should help with the transition. And it isn't up to us to decide whether Mussman is the guy or not, that's up to Mr. Faison.

I'm not an expert, but I'll take a shot. Iceberg can correct me if I'm wrong. I believe that the OTA antenna he is referring to is the old TV antenna that all houses used to have. They pick up the regular over the air television signals for local stations. Radio Shack used to have them not long ago, I'm sure that other electronic stores probably still have them. I think the MN channel is a public television channel from the northern lakes area in Minnesota. Digital signals can actually be split and they can send out 3 signals instead of 1. He mentions PPTV Channel 2.3. That is Prairie Public Television Channel 2 in Grand Forks, which can now have different shows on 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. It sounds like the MN channel is on 2.3.

UND had one major factor that was different than the other Dakota schools. UND lost a head coach as they entered the transition period. They promoted a coach from within rather than hiring an existing head coach. The change in coaches set back the recruiting process a year or 2. And it has probably taken Mussman some time to adjust to the head job, just as it takes most people time to get up to speed when they are promoted. In spite of this, they have managed to have a winning record every year. As we have seen, on the field success can change quickly. NDSU had several good years, went down quickly, and is having more success this year. SDSU made the playoffs last year and things aren't going quite as well this year. South Dakota hasn't had a better record during transition until this year. Their big claim to fame is a single win over Minnesota. And even UND has had both good and bad. They looked bad in a couple of games last year and then came back to play several pretty good games at the end of the season. I think it's a little early to write off UND's program or it's coach. Adjustments need to be made. They may need to change some personnel. But you don't make wholesale changes based on part of one season.

One person's definition of 3 types of fans. Do you recognize any of these people?

I believe that it's for this game. AZSIOUX has been providing prizes like that for pretty much all of the Sioux Survivor games if I remember right.
-
If you are going to count the 2 long passes they missed on you also have to count the long pass Harden dropped that he probably would have scored on. I agree it was a bad loss, but misses on long plays happened both ways. SUU was the better team on the field yesterday.

I believe that the NCAA started banning Native American nicknames and logos in 2005. The fundraising project started in 2005. I would say that most of the people that gave money were probably aware that the nickname was in serious jeopardy.

The goal for raising that $100 million is June 30, 2013.

This football game was always scheduled on Fox College Sports. It was not just added to the schedule, it was part of the schedule originally announced for the season. It will be shown on Fox Atlantic. DirecTV uses Channel 617 to show games shown on one of the Fox College Sports channels. They only show live sports on 617 whenever possible. They have their choice of any live sports on any of the Fox College Sports channels and usually make their choice the week of the broadcast. They seem to pick a lot of the UND games. But this wasn't anything that was suddenly added to the schedule.

There has been speculation about that donation for at least a couple of years. He is the most obvious person that could make a huge donation (unless the Engelstad Foundation made another huge donation). It will be interesting to see it that is what is actually happening.

There is a chance that some on this board may see it as overblown if it doesn't include a major athletic component. The College of Arts and Sciences has a long term plan for a new Arts complex that would keep Hughes for visual arts and add wings for music and theater. Maybe that's part of it. I believe that there is a long term plan for a major addition to Gamble for the College of Business. The original rumor mentioned naming rights to the College of Business, maybe that's part of it. Sanford Health has already said they plan a sizable donation. It will probably be similar in size to what they are giving NDSU for the Bison Sports Arena renovation, but we don't know where it would go at UND. It could be part of the indoor practice facility project, or could go to the School of Medicine. That isn't Ralph like, but maybe it is part of a bigger picture. It could be one large gift that they plan to announce, or maybe they plan to announce a series of sizable gifts that add up to something really significant. It will be interesting to finally hear on Friday.

Genoway on Friday and Frattin on Saturday. Let's see if I can get past the 1st round more than once this season.
-
It still is the offseason. The regular season doesn't start until Friday. Reality will strike soon enough. This is still a college team. They will have good games and bad. There are other good teams in the league and around the country. Let's just hope that the team approaches its potential and keeps the season going until April. At that point it becomes a crapshoot and the best team that particular weekend becomes the champs.

I'm pretty sure that FCS will not be picking up these games. Their schedule is online and is set ahead of time. They aren't going to add a UND hockey game on such short notice and bump something else.
