  1. Here are my brackets not they mean anything (conference champ)

    Colorado Springs

    1. CC vs 4. Notre Dame (( CC because they are a host institution))

    2. Miami vs. 3. Mankato

    Albany

    1. UND (wcha)vs. 4. Army (aha) ((Army and clarkson are here for attendance))

    2. Denver vs. 3. Clarkson (ecac)

    Worcester

    1. UNH (hea)vs. 4. SCSU ((Attendance again with UNH and BC))

    2. BC vs. 3. Duluth

    Madison

    1. Michigan (ccha) vs 4. BSU (cha) ((Attendance not a problem here 3 big 10 schools ))

    2. MSU vs 3. UW

These brackets also help with some travel bits

I would think that if it ended up like that the NCAA would put Denver and CC in the Springs to ensure great attendence.

  2. thats my guess as well. hope so as hes a damn good player. same amount of points as danny mattson as a junior right now if its him. maybe thats why he was labeled as the 2nd best player in that age group in minnesota with mattson first ???

    http://www.followthepuck.com/ go to stats

I think it is Tyler as well. Maybe this will give us a good chance at landing his linemate Ambroz as well. He sure sounds like he will be one of the elite recruits for his age as he is only a freshman and putting up some pretty good numbers.

  3. It was old school WCHA at the John. The Goofer faithful will complain about how mean we are and dirty and...CANADIAN. They will never stop complaining. They will be complaining in their overpriced suburban homes in April watching the Sioux on TV.

Re-watching all the video in slow motion here is my attempt at an unbiased opinion.

    Second period scrum:

Peltier runs Trupp from behind on the sideboards. This shot was much more malicious than the CFB called on Duncan to start the game. Peltier then proceeds to work over Trupp while Trupp is on his back. Several Sioux skate to Trupp's aid, shortly followed by several Gophers. Malone tries to get Peltier to fight. Malone is thrown into the box by the AR. Fight disperses. Calls: Malone double minor for roughing and a 10 minute misconduct (for being 3rd man in and instigating), Peltier minor for roughing. Result: Gopher powerplay for 2 minutes with the Sioux bench shortened by three: Duncan, Malone and Radke. Minnesota without Peltier for two. What Calls should've been made: Sioux: Malone 5 minutes on a roughing major and 10 minute misconduct for 3rd man in. Gophers: Peltier 5 and a game for CFB, 2 minutes for roughing. Result would've been a 2 minute Sioux powerplay, Very short Sioux bench equal short benches for the third period.

I agree with you totally on the Peltier/Trupp/Malone incident and this is the reason Hak got so pissed and gave the bird. Peltier cross-checks Trupp from behind into the boards and no penalty was called(keep in mind that Finley got one for cross-checking a Goofer into the boards as well as Duncan's play 7 seconds into the game in which Adam didn't hesitate to put his arm up). Trupp gets up and goes after Peltier who loses his helmet and manages to get on top of Trupp and starts throwing punches. Malone and Frattin come in to help out. Somehow out of that, the Gophers come out with a power-play. While I don't agree with Hak flipping the bird, I 100% agree and see why he was so pissed after that incident. Another case of fantastic reffing in the WCHA.

  4. There was another recruit that played in the tournament here this weekend that was offered for 2008.

Anyone know for sure who this is and would be willing to tell us or do we have to wait and see? I figured the name would have slipt out sometime today.

  5. What a great start to the 2010 recruiting class with him and Mattson. Anybody think he may have been the reason that we never made an offer to Schmidt? Nice to see we have D-man lined up for the future but I still would prefer to add 1 or 2 more for 08.

  6. I know that I also saw that this game is on CSTV. I hope so, I can't afford to go to the game this time. Just graduated,no job and no more student loan money to let me go to games.

I just checked the guide for Dish Network and it shows that the friday night game will be played live at 7:00 on CSTV so if nothing changes there should be Sioux hockey on at my house.

  7. I'm not sure I like Kaip on the first line, but only for one reason.

Kaip is a center. I don't have the stats with me, but I believe he's done alright on draws this year. Removing a center weakens the lower lines.

Kaip is deserving based upon leadership and performance, for sure, but I do think we need capable centers just as much.

I have to agree with you here as well. I like the idea of switching up the lines but I really like Kaip as a center. I wonder why Kaip isn't centering the line as I thought they liked Oshie on the wing. Who knows? I trust their decisions.

  8. Anybody think there is a chance of a line of Duncan-Oshie-Genoway? I thought they played together last year when Toews was at the World Juniors when the team first started to get rolling. I'm not complaining about VandeVelde's play just wondering what everyone thinks and it would also make for more scoring depth throughout the lineup. Something like:

    Duncan-Oshie-Genoway

    Watkins-Kaip-Frattin

    Trupp-Vandevelde-Kozek

    Forney-Zajac-Malone

  9. Since Hak wasn't around for the Coaches show this week maybe he wanted to see Schmidt first hand before offering him. Hopefully that's the reasoning behind him not being around. Exiled One may know if he was at the game or not. From everything I gather, it seems like a toss-up as to where Schmidt decides to go as I have heard from different people that CC was first on his list, then someone said UND was his dream school, then there was the article from sometime ago that Exiled One posted that stated he wanted to go to SCSU and now someone on another board claims that the Gophers are his first choice. Anyone have any clue?

  10. I was recently informed that Nate Schmidt is more of a wait and see player for us. As I was saying last night, right now it is about developing a little more.

I think if we list Schmidt as a wait and see type player we will miss out on him. From what I have gathered, CC, Minny and St. Cloud have all offered so far so I would think if we didn't offer this weekend that he would really have to want to be a Fighting Sioux to wait for an offer from us and turn down those other offers right now.

  11. I can't take seriously anyone who would list Kaip and Watkins as disappointing or lacking in effort. They play their roles terrifically and have chipped in on the scoresheet as well. The team disappointed this weekend, no doubt, but Captain Kaip shows his leadership on the ice every shift.

By the way, Oshie was really nicked up. Couldn't do a thing with the puck in practice all week, from what I heard.

MN was just really good this weekend. When they get Carman back, they'll go on a good run and have a good shot at third in the league, behind the Colorados.

UND's goaltending should keep them in the top five, but until they actually sweep someone, it's hard to see them in third. The next two games are absolutely crucial for qualifying for the NCAAs.

I gotta agree with everything you say here. I think both Kaip and Watkins had pretty decent weekends. I thought Trupp was probably our best forward friday night and I thought Watkins was our best on Saturday. He seemed to have by far the most jump out of any of the forwards.

I believe Oshie was playing at somewhere between 50 and 60% this weekend. When he was going down to block some point shots on Saturday night, you could plainly see that he was having more and more trouble getting up. It was quite obvious he was hurting.

I have seen all but a few MN games this year and I thought that was far and away their best weekend of hockey. They seemed to be a totally different team than the one I have seen in previous weeks. In previous weeks, I thought they were being outplayed by teams such as Michigan Tech and AA and in the case of the Michigan Tech series were lucky to get two points as opposed to this weekend were I believe that the Sioux were very lucky to get two points.

  12. I know I've brought this up before but does anyone know anything new on the D situation for next year. I have seen a few names thrown around for next year but haven't heard anything recently. Are we still recruiting for next year or do we plan on bringing in both Gleason and Fienhage?

  13. The Sioux need to come out with a strong forecheck and pressure the young Gophers D. Get the crowd into the game and go from there. I think the Kaip line will be up to the challenge of shutting down Minny's top line. This is not a time to give the Gophers hope for the rest of their season. A sweep would put them in a tough spot. Let's hope it happens.

I agree with needing to pressure their young D core. After watching the Gophers the last few weeks, we need to get after them and also pressure them when we do have the puck as well. Take it right at them at full speed and see if they can handle the speed. They seemed to struggle with Denver and CC in that area. Especially pressure David Fischer who has seemed to struggle mightily with the puck and almost coughed it up numerous times on Saturday against Tech. He might be to Gopher fans what Brian Lee was to Sioux fans.

  14. you dont see that because you havent seen any of the incoming freshman play i green and white. a couple of those players coming in could make their own #1 line, toews, gregoire and cichy looks damn good :D

I was actually thinking that VV centering Toews and Gregoire would be my best guess as to being the top line.

  15. I agree that Oshie, Chorney, and Finley are gone after this year. And if VV or Kozek really light it up, one of them could sign too. But a part of me thinks that there is a chance that Duncan comes back for his Senior year. It probably won't happen, but of those players above, he is the most likely to stay I would say.

    Of these 19 forwards:

    Ryan Martens

    Andrew Kozek

    Darcy Zajac

    Brad Miller

    Brent Davidson

    Michael Forney

    Evan Trupp

    Matt Watkins

    Matt Frattin

    Brad Malone

    Chris VandeVelde

    Brett Bruneteau

    Mike Cichy

    Brett Hextall

    Mario Lamoureux

    David Toews

    Jason Gregoire

    T.J. Oshie

    Ryan Duncan

With Oshie gone for sure, that brings us to 18. Wow. Pick 6 from the list above to sit each night. That's crazy. Even if Duncan leaves, I think we could still see some player shifting...maybe Davidson not on the team or Forney going to the USHL for a year or something like Fylling did. Hard to say. There is definitely going to be some competition for playing time at forward!

The thing that jumps out at me when I look at that list excluding Oshie and Duncan is that I don't see a definite number one line like we've had the past few years. I think we will be able to roll 4 lines and it may be hard to tell the difference between who is the first and who is the fourth line. That sure would be a nice problem to have.

  16. I gotta say after watching Minny play Mankato last weekend and AA this weekend that I would be quite amazed if those two teams don't finish 9 and 10 in the WCHA. Yeah I know AA beat Minny on Saturday but they might be one of the worst puck handling teams I have ever seen. I love watching the Goophies lose but that was just a bad hockey game to watch.

  17. I was asked if we will see any more recruits for 2008, here is what I think.

    Goalies: (Need 3)

    Aaron Walski

    Brad Eidsness

    NEED 1 MORE GOALIE

    Defense: (Need 7 or 8)

    Derrick LaPoint

    Chay Genoway

    Zach Jones

    Jake Marto

    Taylor Chorney

    Joe Finley

    Ben Blood

    Corey Fienhage

    Joe Gleason

I predict Finley and Chorney go pro, Blood definitely comes in. Fienhage likely comes in. I think Gleason may play juniors for a year (Frosh Offensive - Defensemen are very rare) This would leave room for 1 or possibly 2 defensive recruits (MacWilliam and/or McPherson).

    Forwards: (Usually need 15)

    Ryan Martens

    Andrew Kozek

    Darcy Zajac

    Brad Miller

    Brent Davidson

    Michael Forney

    Evan Trupp

    Matt Watkins

    Matt Frattin

    Brad Malone

    Chris VandeVelde

    Brett Bruneteau

    Mike Cichy

    Brett Hextall

    Mario Lamoureux

    David Toews

    Jason Gregoire

    T.J. Oshie

    Ryan Duncan

Talk about a tough lineup to crack. Currently there are 19 forwards eligible to play next year. I don't think any of the incoming forwards will defer for another year. Let's call Oshie and Duncan gone. I don't honestly know if Davidson will stick around, I am assuming that he will. That leaves 17 forwards. My guess is that between VV, Watkins, Kozek, Forney, and Miller maybe 1 or 2 get real hot and end up leaving. Any way I look at it, I don't think we will see any more forwards recruited for 2008.

    So I predict 2 more 2008 recruits 1 Goalie, 1 Defender.

I think it would be ideal if we could get two defenders and keep Fienhage and Gleason as 09's. From what I've heard, Fienhage is quite raw and would benefit alot from playing a year in the USHL as would Gleason. If they don't, I think Gleason is the guy who would come in next year.

  18. Well I definitely wasn't thinking about poll rankings whatsoever but just the fact of the standings throughout the country right now.

CC split with NH a couple weeks ago which sorta surprised me. In fact I think NH wooped them the first game didn't they? I dont think Miami has played a WCHA team yet correct. I would like to see how they compare to even one of our weaker WCHA teams, like the goofs  . However it was their first games of the year, but neither BC or Michigan looked impressive during the tourney in the cities. Notre Dame, in my opinion, isn't worth talkin about. I guess my overall question is how strong the WCHA is compared to the rest of the country. And yes, I agree that DU is a good team and it will be a fun series to watch!

UNH swept CC a couple of weeks ago at UNH. They didn't split.

  19. Fact is, you're required to dress two goalies to play the game. If you don't, you must forfeit (I'm pretty sure that's the rule). And to play in a game, you have to be a student with NCAA eligibility remaining.

So that would mean if we only had JPL and Walski, and one of them got hurt, they would still both have to dress and risk having to play hurt.

I think we'd be better off having a student as a third/practice goalie who could at least fill the net during a game if they had to. It would be rough on the defense, but it would keep us from having to forfeit the game.

All that being said, I very much doubt Hakstol would pick up another goalie would wouldn't be eligible to play in a game if necessary.

I don't know the rules but I highly doubt you would have to forfeit a game for dressing only one goalie. That just doesn't make any sense. I would bet you don't have to dress any goalies if you don't want to and play with six skaters the whole game.

  20. Even without Buddish this will be a great class of forwards coming next year...I mean come on...Gregoire and lil Toews are enough to give this class an A! Buddish would be a great last piece to the forward puzzle!!

Budish would be an 09 and not an 08 so he wouldn't be part of this class anyway. He would sure make our 09 class pretty damn good though.
